Overrated?

The AP Preseason Poll has made its annual appearance and — shockingly! — Georgia occupies the same spot, 15th, that it does in the preseason Coaches Poll.  Group hug, everyone.

For what it’s worth, Georgia is the highest ranked SEC East team in the poll (Florida is 17th and Tennessee just scrapes in at number 25).  Auburn, at twelve, is the only other ranked opponent on Georgia’s schedule this season.

Works for me. Striking distance to the top, yet not so high as to get season expectations too crunk, too early.

The Barn is our highest rated opponent at #12. So which is it…we have a tough schedule or cakewalk?? Seems I’ve heard both around here.

SOS is relative. Strong, maybe, for the talent, coaching and experience we have. Weak compared to ranked teams we play and marshmallow compared to Notre Dame.

    • I think it’s both. No highly rated teams, but plenty of depth to the schedule. I think according to Bill Connelly’s advanced stats, outside of Samford, no Georgia opponent is worse than 63rd (Vanderbilt). ESPN’s FPI has no Samford rating, Appy State at 70th and everyone else 46th or higher.

The road/away games are a good test, IMHO…

      It’s a “body blow” schedule.

It depends on how good the Dawgs are. If they really are # 15 or higher then the schedule isn’t so tough. However if they are a mediocre team they could easily lose 5-6 games. ND, UT, FU, Auburn, get upset by one of the second division SEC teams we are supposed to beat and lose to (gasp) GT and there you are. Remember Tech has beaten the Dawgs 2 out of the last 3 games and Vandy has won 2 out of the last 4.

Is Herschel coming back for his final year of eligibility? Even if he was, Mc Jughead would probably self report to the NCAA and suspend him, but not until the UT game

Got another freshmen RB coming in turning heads….may end up as a 3 headed-monster. Better get on the train before it is too late….I BELIEVE!! …….”McJughead” couldn’t carry Kirby “Hold Me Back” Smart’s jock.

App St got votes as well as ND.

Pete Fiutak expresses it for me when he chides AP for copying the top 6 from the Coaches Poll and his first bullet-point comment was to boo their lack of objectivity. He mentions Georgia first as the most underrated team in the poll.

We will finish the season ranked in the top 10; perhaps even top 5.

This is a playoff caliber team. The problem is you almost assuredly will have to beat Bama in the SECC to get there. Yes, the OL is a concern, along with Eason’s inconsistencies; I’m also not all that confident in Cheney either. But if the OL can gel, Eason takes a big step forward, and if Cheney can not overthink things and basically stay out of the way, then this team is going places.

Don’t be surprised if we’re a bit slow out of the gates – including a loss to ND – but after that we start curb stomping people.

I’m very worried about that. Think about what happened last year after the UNC win – perceived momentum. Think about the mentality of the program after the near miss the next week and the Ole Miss woodshed job – a lot of buyer’s remorse started creeping in. I would suggest last year’s team never recovered.

I’m in the 10-2 camp right now until I see otherwise.

10-2 means we most likely play in ATL..right? And if we were 10-2 going in there you can figure we’re maybe in the top 6…top 8 for sure…And if we face Bama in ATL, and lose, we’re still in top 10 (if it’s not a blow out)..If we win, we’re in the final four…which means top 5 finish. If we lose in ATL, then we play a top 12 or so team in a bowl. Win that and we’re finished in top ten. Lose the bowl and go to 10-4 and the talk about the SEC East being weak will get louder.
My point is 10-2 is very ambitious but would open a lot of doors. We better be a whole lot better than last year if we hope to see that.

About right, imo. We have a pretty high upside at that level but I understand why we should be that low based on how our offense looked last season….prove it on the field and all is well. Sticking with 10-2 but 9-3 could be more likely with the possible loss of Parrish for ND and MSU. We have the talent and depth for getting stronger as the season goes along. No excuses, no complaints.

10-2 or 9-3 should not be too much to expect. It is reasonable to think we should be improved or equally as good in all areas of the team. QB has more experience (hard to imagine regression here). OL should at least be as good and possibly better with a mix of experience and young but better talent. The D all but 1 back (2 for the first few games with Parrish hurt); experience at all positions. An upgrade of depth and talent at DB and WR. A great returning RB crew with added depth. Another year of the coaches/players learning together. The schedule should be comparable to last years 8-4 W/L. So, an extra win or two should be doable.

Absolutely meaningless! The only poll I’m interested in is the one that lands us in striking range of the National Championship Playoffs. Don’t see that happening this year.

The team I think is going to show up big time nationally is Wazzou. They have the best QB in the nation and several good receivers. Their D improved a lot last year too.

Who cares about polls and AP at beginning of season.
    Takem one at a time.
I think this offense will be hard to keep of the scoreboard. If they put up big numbers in first two games, I think they roll.
Want to see Eason get the ball out on time in passing game. He has the receivers. Would like to the OC & OLC shift the interior line on plays. Time for the offense to stretch a defense 100 & the 53. With depth at TEs & RBs thry should plus the receivers are better than most think. For a change.
If the offense does move and score, time for some coaching changes in year 3.
Play book should be bigger now. Plus play much more up tempo. Tired of looking like Vandy and Bama.
Want to see a new Dawg offense for a change

“Want to see a new Dawg offense for a change”

Is Kirby capable of change this early in his HC career? Will he turn his coordinators loose to add their flavor? It may take a while for him to realize he can develop his own style and allow his coordinators to do the same. Create OUR identity!
