Harsh comment, but I don’t think he was wrong. Naturally, we are all hoping for, no, expecting better than SOD. But, the nagging doubt will probably remain until he shows he can win bigger than his predecessors.

Agree with the quote wholeheartedly. Good way he expressed what is an unease with many of us.
And if that scenario comes to pass, we know of another DGD who is already proving he can put points on the board as he did when he coached UGA’s Offense.

I don’t think it is so harsh as it is just realistic, and Kirby absolutely knows it. You cannot lose games you should win and stay employed. Or even win close games that have no business being close. If we can get our staff to a point where everyone does their job to the best of their ability, we will be fine.

True, but while red pants are not a norm in many wardrobes, they aren’t loud and obnoxious like orange pants are on anyone! Even a small orange stripe would be obnoxious to my eyes.
Kirby isn’t SOD if for no other reason than he can recruit and hasn’t pissed off over half of the state’s HS coaches. But this is a big year if he hopes to continue the recruiting momentum, and he will need to address both coordinators if we don’t win 9, or more. We have the talent, we have some continuity with a Year 2 staff, and enough film to show what we lacked with decisions at crucial times last season. I think we see the uptick, and KS will be better in 2017. If we go 7-5 again with all the weapons we have, the problem isn’t the athletes so he will have to make, or announce, changes before NSD or risk sliding down hill.

Kirby needs a signature win. What made me “buy in” on Richt was the Hobnail Boot game. We hadn’t beaten the Vowels in Kneeland since 1980.
If we can beat Notre Dame convincingly in South Bend that will go a long way in convincing me he and his staff can win big.

I agree that Kirby needs a signature win but I don’t think it would be ND. Too many people think the ND game should be an easy win where the Irish are always way overrated. One of the dawgraded things.

I don’t know that beating ND has the potential for a “signature win” but it has the sort of “we’ve here!” potential that the 2008 alabama opening game vs. #9 Clemson (34-10) had for Saban. It wasn’t not their biggest win by far and not even the biggest of that season (at UGA or at LSU) but it was the night they showed things would be a bit different in t-town from that point forward.
That’s what I’m looking for. A “holy shit, these guys are for real” beat down.

Kirby weeded out some kids that wouldn’t buy in and has upgraded the lines of scrimmage. The culture is changing from entitlement to earn it. Dooley got in after dozens of kids quit or got kicked out and really never got the numbers back up. I don’t know if Dooley is a good coach or not, but it’s hard to win with so few scholarship players/ all underclassmen.

Yep….was there for that one. I believe Fred Gibson also caught a LONG one that game (early). There at the end (hobnail), that was the loudest and then most quiet stadium that I have ever been too…my ears were ringing for dayz, it was a beautiful thang:

All Kirby has to do is 2 things: #1 don’t lose any games you’re supposed to win, and #2 is win some that you were supposed to lose. That’s how you elevate. I would settle for #1 this year to be honest.

Same here. We’re still not loaded and mature as a team. Another great recruiting cycle and we should have a legit roster (finally!).
In 2017-2018, I hope to see meaningful improvement in the coaching. No more bad losses. I hope to see reason to believe that Kirby is the guy we want him to be.

The one thing that gives me hope is Kirby should leave a fully stocked cupboard. Fire McGarity, get a competent AD, and we could be set up very nicely for the next coach.

Didn’t we start a QB named Faton Bauta in Jacksonville? Didn’t we desperately import a LT from Rhode Island? Didn’t we send Logan Gray out to fair catch dozens of punts? Didn’t we desperately import a QB who failed at Virginia? Just to name a few…
That’s not the stuff of SEC powerhouse football.

7-5 with this roster against this schedule would be malpractice, theft and fraud. Referencing Dooley is being kind. Goff won 10 games with this kind of talent and he shared a division with Spurrier at his satanic peak at Florida.

I don’t think that is anything that we haven’t thought- interesting to see that the coaches are talking the same thing.
I’m not sure how much stock to put into that index based on half the teams that are on there from 2015 and that 3 of the 4 CFP teams aren’t on there. Oklahoma doesn’t show up on the list at all and I’m not sure how you could call Clemson’s 2017 talent as the 9th best in the nation.

The last two recruiting classss have been great, no doubt about it. But those kids are just freshman and sophomores. It will take time and experience to get these young pups up to speed. The first half of this season could be rough considering we are facing the possibility of breaking in a few youngsters along the OL, at WR and perhaps in the secondary. Guys, I fully expect our offense to look very similar to 2016 until a few of these greenhorns gain experience. The real test will be Eason. Can he take what the defense is giving him (midrange to deep ball) when opposing defenses stack the box with 8 or 9 guys. I fully expect an “ugly” game Saturday that is way too close for comfort. 7 to 8 wins is what this team is this year guys. Now, 2018 will be a completely different story.

Sorry, 7 or 8 wins stops the recruiting momentum and probably results in at least one coordinator’s firing. The honest assessment is that fewer than 9 wins including the bowl game puts someone and his boss on a very hot seat entering 2018.

I kind of think one reason we made the tough decision to move on from Richt is the weariness with all of our units being proverbial “ships passing in the night.” When the line finally ages into form, we’ll have defensive departures and complain about our youth there. It has to stop somewhere if we are going to be great.
If it was valid for a coach to complain that he can’t win big because every piece of his roster isn’t deep, talented and aged to perfection then these damn coaches shouldn’t be making the money they make. I’m sorry. I’m not trying to be a crazy fan, but good god…….I watch a lot of football and there are a hell of a lot of coaches out there fighting and scrapping at schools with not even half the advantages we have. Kirby is gonna need to shake his silver-spooned pedigree reputation and do some real coaching.
