Jason Butt’s game summary is a good a reference place to start for the Appy State game as I could ask for, so here ’tis.
Half the fun of an opening game is seeing where all the new moving parts fit and considering how many true freshmen Smart is threatening to play, today is certainly no exception in that regard. Most of the rest of the fun is seeing if there’s something to all the preseason happy talk.
Winning would be nice, too.
Given how ASU likes to slow the pace down and how Smart’s natural tendency leans towards grinding as well, I’m skeptical there will be a ton of scoring in this game, barring a rash of turnovers and special teams specialness. I also think Georgia just falls short of covering the spread. Not that I’ll be troubled by, say, a 27-14 result that was not in doubt from early on. (Lots of second teamers playing in the fourth quarter, in other words.)
Mainly, as I said earlier this week, just show me that you’re getting your shit together, Dawgs, and I’ll leave tonight a happy camper.
Dazzle me in the comments today, folks. Have at it.
Here’s to football, a lot of entertainment, and an AU MNC.
Only made better by beating UGA 3 times in 1 year!
Enjoy the day gents.

Fall temps in the air (at least here, anyway), cooler of beer on the back deck, BGE humming along at 250 with a few butts inside, tv and audio system dialed in….and a hoarse voice from yelling at perhaps the worst officiating I’ve witnessed since the swindle in the swamp in that CU-CSU game last night. Pac 12 officiating strikes again.
It’s Saturday in Athens. As I’ve been saying all offseason, now the fun begins, and this year is the start of some really fun and exciting years ahead for UGA football. 11 win season and a SECC game await us, with even better things to come.

PAC12 was desperate for that win, and the refs did what they have done before with OOC games (admit I am not sure where the refs were from for that game but those phantom offensive PI calls were really bad.) CSU has a better defense than I thought, they will have a good season based on the first two games.
Today’s game should give your throat a rest. May start slowly, but we will roll as the game goes along. Sure hope so to give some backups a look and make the best decision on the traveling squad for next week.

“Mainly, as I said earlier this week, just show me that you’re getting your shit together, Dawgs, and I’ll leave tonight a happy camper.”
I fit into the camp of this thinking as well. I don’t expect a championship team the first game but I would like to see a disciplined team. Players lining up correctly and well executed plays. As I said before, I want some variety on offense to make it interesting. Even IF we can impose our will in the run game I still want variety. Good use of TEs and RBs in the passing game, etc.
I will not be disappointed in a marginal win IF it is a methodical butt whooping from start to finish…a full 60 minutes. The article you shared about the small, quick Appy D concerns me a little. It brings back memories of Boise St.
I will be happy of the OL shows they can get a push when expected like 3rd and short. THAT’S when I want to see our will imposed…if we need two yards for a first and the whole stadium knows its Chubb down hill…then by all means, let’s show we can move the pile and get those two yards.
I will love to lots of players subbed in and out all game on both sides of the ball.
Also, I’m excited about the thought of 11 super fast guys on kick coverage. Well 10 and a good kick 🙂

Good comments, I also feel what we need to see is more significant than the margin of victory. LAst year’s blowout against Miami was because they had 4-5 plays over 50 yards, I doubt we match that, or even need to. Especially want to see some ability from OC to “hit ’em where they ain’t”, that was really missing in several games last year.

Finebaum is being a jackass to Les Miles about his coaching career, because of course he is. I don’t see this dynamic lasting the entire year without Miles beating Pawl’s ass.
Les’ entertainment value lies in his inane ramblings, I’m not sure how he’s going to do in this continuous talking role. I sincerely wish they could’ve coaxed Spurrier into that job. That cat may an asshole but he has loyalties to none and throws stinging jabs everywhere.

I am not in the camp of ‘just show me you are getting your shit together and I’ll be a happy camper”. We should totally dominate a team like this with all the athletes we have. I do not believe they have a single player we would have offered.
Our offensive line is a huge question mark as everyone knows. Why is that with all the highly recruited players we have? I know this year’s class is the best we have had in a while on the O line, but the older guys were highly ranked recruits too and Pittman is consistently touted as one of the best if not the best.
Time for results as far as I am concerned.

If we’re really the 4th-most talented team in the country (or thereabouts), this shouldn’t even be close. So, if we don’t at least cover the spread, I’ll be really disappointed, and officially worried about the rest of the season. I realize it’s the season opener, and there are kinks and wrinkles and jitters and blah blah blah. But seriously, if this isn’t at least a three touchdown win, something’s wrong.

Most points ever allowed by a Texas HC in his debut….51….at home…to Maryland….in football. The same Maryland that went 3-9 last year. First game and already setting school records. Someone get Don Leeburn on the horn, we need this guy, he’s a real coach who adapts to the strengths of this team.
You think the Texas fans are talking about:
A) the lack of talent Tom Herman inherited
B) the culture he inherited
C) the talent is good enough but he is an overrated product of Urban Meyer D) the talent is good enough but he doesn’t have enough HC experience (only 2 years) to be the head coach at The University of Texas or
E) the talent is good enough and their school is a premier job and can get ANYONE they want and the AD didn’t do enough of a candidate search and let the boosters anoint a no talent ass clown.
Just kidding, I’m sure they are just like us UGA fans and are currently engaged in a rational, level headed conversation focusing on the positives they saw today and that Tom Herman will be fine but requires some patience while he builds the team that he wants to play with as their team does have some major flaws.

Because Kirby has a 21 point lead against a Sunbelt team at home with a defense pitching a shutout, their coach has a 21 point deficit against an SEC team on the road and has to get something going before the depth disparity becomes a bigger factor. Not to mention their team has a senior school record holding QB and we have a QB who woke up this morning not expecting to play.

While we have found some energy on offense, we probably just lost Justin Fields. Oh well, who is out there for 2019 and 2020?

So Fields is afraid of Fromm as a starter but not as a back up. That makes no sense
LikeLiked by 1 person
It may not make sense, but that is what he said. In the interview he did with AJC Dawg Nation last month.
Q. Will a strong or a poor start by the Bulldogs matter to you?
A. I’m not really looking at the wins and losses and how the team plays. My main thing is the quarterback position. That’s the position I play. So say if Jacob Eason gets hurt. Of course, now I don’t want him to get hurt. I don’t want that. He’s a great guy. A great guy. But for example, then in that situation maybe Jake Fromm goes in there and lights it up. Just tears it up. Well, for me then Georgia has kind of solidified their starter. I would have to take a good look at that. Now, I’m not afraid to compete. But I feel like if he has that experience then he would have that edge over me. But if Jacob Eason plays most of the whole season, then Jake Fromm doesn’t have that edge [in playing time] on me at all.

Was hoping Eason would come out and look like the number one recruit in the nation that he was. It would have been great to not need Fromm this year AND get Fields so the cupboard would be full for years to come. Alas, even if Eason did not get hurt, it appears inevitable that Fromm was going to take the reins on this season.
As for recruiting as a “Natty” as you say that is what ultimately wins you the true Natty and keeps you in contention for years to come. Alabama did not get there and stay there by having the number 10-12-17-22 etc class in the country. You got to have the Jimmys and Joes to make the Xs and Os work. So hell yes I watch both and wish for the most favorable outcome on both fronts.

Dude, you’ll get more joy out of watching the games and rooting for the good UGA players.

What to you mean if I was rooting for the good UGA players. I was hoping even praying that Eason would come out and light it up. If that was the case we don’t burn Fromm’s red shirt and we are set for years to come.
As for Herschel, “Dude” I WAS there and got to revel in the glory of those wonder years. I just want to get back there AND sustain it again before they plant me in the Texas soil.
Being short sighted and not planning for the future has been the ruin of may great business, teams, etc. How long after Aikman retired before the Cowboys were relevant again? How great has our QB play been since Murray graduated? Lack of planning for the future will lead you into the wilderness of loss that you may be in for years. ONE bad year of recruiting in 2013 set the program back for YEARS. You think Saban just cheers for the players he has and doesn’t worry about recruiting and sustainability of the program (grey shirting, roster management). If you want to be great you have to plan for the long haul, not just revel in today.

Sorry but Ramsey was an embarrassment, and he cost us the shutout. Why on earth he decided to throw such a horrid pass as a 5th year senior is beyond me. To make matters worse, as he was coming off the field he had a smile on his face and then was laughing about it on the sidelines.
IMO he should not make the trip to ND.

Just ask the AJC on Dawgnation. And I quote:
“The opening week victory in Smart’s second season began with a major scare, as Jacob Eason suffered a knee injury in the first quarter after he was pushed out of bounds on a play that led to a penalty. Jake Fromm played the remainder of the game – save for UGA’s final snap – and guided the Georgia offense with some help from Nick Chubb and Sony Michel.”
Ramsey could not have thrown any interceptions, since he never threw any passes.

If the coaches know the same things about Ramsey as the fans, let him practice after the game, not during. Can’t fathom the reason why any coach would put him in on any series of downs that isn’t beyond the 50-yd line into the opponent’s territory.
Will have to say he had a shell-shock look about him as he went through his motions, decision-making, when coming off the field and actions on the sidelines.

He is BIG, looks good. Gotta great arm, looks good, #1 recruit in entire nation, looks good & makes some feel good………..but Fromm just gets the job done, the offense responds…everyone gets involved. The interference call stemmed from his underthrowing a receiver that was 10 yards behind the defense.
The swing pass to Swift….well that was just a pick six waiting to happen.
From did look okay on a few seam passes though and that was encouraging.
Yeah Eason looked bad but he only threw 3 passes. I’m aware of what he is capable of based on last year. Fromm is definitely a step backwards.

Eason would have thrown it through the uprights haha.

Now we won’t know how badly Eason is hurt until kickoff next week.

Hated to see Eason limp off, but Fromm juiced up the offense, IMO. He’s got leadership skills, even with those off-target throws, and the team seems to respond to him. The defense seemed to be as good as advertised– should’ve been a shutout. Our two senior RBs did an amazing job rolling up yards behind an O-Line that didn’t look much different than last year’s edition. If you want to worry about something, the offensive line is a worthy candidate; this was App State, and we couldn’t manhandle them. Florida got beat, but it has men up front. Bama and FSU have a serious trench war going on as I post this. Will our line get there? How soon?

If Eason is indeed seriously injured we are in deep trouble.

Good grief. I just got back home, and you would have thought we stunk the place up with the comments here. The defense controlled the game. The offense did what it had to do. The special teams were a thing of beauty I haven’t seen in a while. The starting 22 pitched a freaking shutout on a Group of 5 team that’s likely to win their conference. I’m not drinking the Kool-Aid. We could get knocked off next week, but tonight was pretty darn encouraging as many thought we would struggle to put them away.

Kicking and punting were fantastic. Return game was stalled. Hope Eason is okay. Fromm did some good things, and it seemed they opened the offense for him. He did stare down his receivers which will bite him in the future.
Defense was solid. I think we’ll ride that D for a while, which is fine by me.

The App punter was pretty darn good himself, and they had some really quick guys on their punt team. Mecole had a pretty good return on the one kickoff with the first team return team.
I hope Eason gets healthy quickly. We need him for this season to meet expectations. The positive was Fromm didn’t wilt in the moment. On the staring down of receivers, you can’t really see that in person (or at least from my seats). In the running game we seemed to struggle going left, but when we went right behind Thomas and Sims (?), we knocked people back (another thing to see on the DVR).

It’s “pre-whining”. A freshman comes in cold, leads the team to a win and throws a couple of iffy balls. Memories are short around here.

Tubberville, you ignorant slut!

He was terrible. As a former SEC coach with years of experience, I was expecting him to be at least decent. Instead, he brought no insight whatsoever.

Whoever the sideline guy was … my God. If that’s all ESPN has left to do that job after firing all those people, they have WAY worse problems than UGA does.

The firings were about money. They fired people who were high salary and kept the low salary bums. Get used to second eaters at ESPN because aside from a few faces of the franchise that is who you will get from now on.

It was pretty obvious that Tubberville had never read our lineup until he was in the booth. “David” Bellamy, “Gilliard” at center. Other times he just called a number. I wish he just stuck with the numbers rather than mangling the names.

About the only thing Tubs got right was GILL-yard. There was an article last week saying that’s how it should be pronounced.

Seriously? Well I stand corrected. Sort of like Mauger being “Mau-zhay”.
I guess it is “Henerin” at tailback, too. 😉

For the life of me, I can’t understand how a Charlie Strong team has such a terrible defense.
Hermann has a lot of work to do there.

Did they do a ‘national search’, too?

I like how Chaney changed the tempo of the offense with Fromm in the game. Give credit where credit is due.
Fromm executed it well, but we are not ready to suffer another ‘throwaway’ year with a true freshman QB. Hope Eason’s OK. Need another option at QB when the true freshman gets the inevitable interception bug.
Aside from the usual first-game procedure penalties, the team played disciplined football and so far we look better in the red zone. OL was decent on pass blocking but needs to get better with its drive blocking.
Wims and the tight ends looked good. Swift looks like a threat to catch the ball out of the backfield.
Can’t complain about a shutout from the first ream defense, but they need to do a better job of getting the QB on the ground. ND’s QB ran for over 100 yards in the opener.
I like our grad transfer punter Nizialek and it is safe to say Rodrigo deserves a scholarship.

Interesting to read that about Chaney.
I wasn’t in a very good environment for critically watching the game (one of my college-age kids had a bunch of college-aged guests over), but I felt, while I was watching it, that Chaney changed things up when Fromm had to go in and simplified things and called passes that were designed to get the ball out quickly before the freshman had too much time to think about things.
It seemed like this line of thought (1) worked well the first half, and (2) somehow went away over halftime. I’ll have to re-watch the game to get a better handle on it, though.
If Fromm has to start next week, I hope they go with more “check with me” (even if it is annoying to watch) to deal with all the multiple fronts you know Notre Dame will be planning to throw at him.

Tempo was purposefully changed to run clock after the big lead in the second half, and just about everyone on the travel roster (who wasn’t suspended) got some game experience.

It seemed to me that they were ready for Fromm to play…good job by the Coaches.

I thought the same about the offense, but then read where Kirby said they didn’t change things. It could have been that Fromm hit the easy early passes that Eason over threw. From there, the offense opened up.
Whatever the cause, I was glad to see them open it up. The first few series of running into a stacked box frustrated me.

GILLyard is actually how he wants it pronounced, was the only thing Tubs got right. . . .

If you have superior depth and talent, sometimes it takes a little while to show. I think we started to see us gashing them late in q2 and q3. We also saw some fairly astounding talent on the field, especially our safeties and tight ends and of course running backs. Chubb seemed to have the quicks. I saw enough to be confident we will beat Notre Dame soundly. The game may well be close in the first half and then we will pull away. I hope Fromm is our starter, he plays w/ confidence and is good enough to get the ball where it needs to go.

Wish I had your confidence. I’ll be there but will be happy with a one point win. Just don’t see ND as a pushover at home. It’s a big game for them, too.
