Hold the line.

Quite the stat here.

Meanwhile, “Notre Dame managed to pressure quarterback Jake Fromm on just 11 of his 31 dropbacks.”

If Notre Dame indeed has two legitimate first rounders on its offensive line, what does that say about Georgia’s defensive front seven?  And maybe, just maybe, the Dawgs’ offensive line is doing a little better than we gave it credit for doing.

Just like with Bobo haz crayon, when the offense starts consistently executing Chaney will look pretty sharp.

I came away somewhat unimpressed with the ND OL, including the projected 1st round LT McGlinchey. I believe the other OL is currently pegged in the early 2nd round. Either way, IMO the UGA game lost both considerable money.

With that said, I was more impressed with the ND DL than I anticipated, so that absolutely is a compliment to the OL. Frankly, if we had last year’s OL for this game, I seriously doubt we win. We have a long way to go for sure, but finally the OL is looking up. And if we land one or more of the top OL we are after for the ’18 class, our depth will be set for years to come.

The OL seems to be protecting much better than last year. Run blocking has improved but is inconsistent. Our biggest issue remains that we aren’t making teams pay for loading the box. Of course, that’s been an issue ever since murrays eligibility expired.

Given those ND passing stats it’s a good thing mizzou can’t play defense. We better get in a position to score points by then though. Given our strengths and weaknesses that may be a tougher game than we might anticipate.

It’s all about getting the guards and center to get a more consistent push at the point of attack when run blocking. Gaillard just isn’t a particularly intense dude, and Sims is what he is: average. Baker did a nice job at his new spot at LG and when Kindley is fully healed he’ll do even better. Wish we had someone pushing Gaillard though, as I think that’s part of the problem.

Gaillard is better than last years turnstile.

Last year’s turnstile made an NFL roster. I wasn’t pleased with his play, either. But it does make you wonder what else is awry besides talent level. I’ll just say it — I don’t think Pittman is coaching them up to the extent I believed him to be capable.

        Gaillard looked bad Saturday night.

Pittman likes big guys. That’s the extent of his coaching that I’ve seen. All I know when Arkansas had the biggest line in football, we kicked the shit out of them in Little Rock.

He may turn out okay here, but past performance hasn’t exactly wow’d me. Same with Chaney. He did a great job of coaching up Brees, and a decent job with Peterman. Otherwise, pretty run of the mill.

My hope is that Kirby assembles enough talent all around them that they suddenly become geniuses again.

I think consistency is exactly what we’re missing, more so with run blocking than with pass pro. This OL is capable of both great and terrible play, as the ND game showed. Wynn is dependable, and Thomas is fine for a Fr. and will be very good in the future. The interior linemen are just really hot and cold. Their blocking on, e.g., Chubb’s longest run and Michel’s TD was perfect. But on the stop of Chapas on 3rd-and-1 in the 4Q, really poor, to name just one. I think the ultimate answer here lies in the 2017 recruiting class and how soon those guys can take over. If Kindley, a 2016 guy, can progress, all the better.

  5. CFB Film Room is a must-follow on Twitter. They also looked at the LT for ND and talked about how poorly he’s played as a LT (his breakout year was a RT, apparently). They talked about how he was beaten too often last year and much the same against UGA.

The O line has clearly improved, but I still think we have a way to go to get to the point of the line winning us a game when we need it. I have a ton of faith in Pittman to get the O-line to an elite level over the next couple of years. He was the hire that got me the most excited.

That stat scares me because it illustrates what we have all seen regarding our pass coverage. Too many receivers running wide open, we just haven’t faced a really good passing QB yet, but our DBs need to grow up quickly before we meet someone with a hot hand. I know we have injury issues with Parrish and Davis that have caused us to move personnel around so maybe we get help before we play MSU and TN. That is the defense’s only weakness and they will go right at it.

You’re overstating it a little bit. Outside of the slow-developing deep crosses and one overthrown long ball, the receivers weren’t running wide open Saturday.

Fair enough, I may be over reacting because it is ingrained in my memory from past secondaries. I do think our coverage remains too loose, and there have been a few/couple of busts that didn’t result in big plays because of an inaccurate pass or drop. With our strength in the Front 7 this is the only way anyone will be able to move the ball and I have to have something to sweat about. I will say, our LBs this year look much better in coverage this year so that is one area of weakness in defending the pass that looks better. As Erk said, if they don’t score, they can’t beat us. We will never get there, but it is a worthy goal and we seem to be closer than we have been in recent years.

I agree with you that the secondary is the weakest part of the defense, but they’ve defended quite a few balls in these first couple of games. If they could have held on to one of those interceptions, the game may very well have turned into the rout it could have been.

That’s it. I haven’t been able to put my finger on the feeling……

ND led most of the game, but the impression I got was not that they were winning so much so much as staving off disaster.

A great way to help our downfield DBs is to continue to bust the QB’s ass early and often. It clearly played on the mind of Wimbush. Nobody looks forward to being crushed from behind by a heat seeking missle.

And I think that has been the plan all through camp. We have to hope they improve (and get healthy) as we get into October. But for now, we are putting a lot of heat on the QB, last Saturday was the best since the Hawaii game for surrounding, and putting major heat on, the QB.

This stat and the takes above all come down to one simple idea: dominating lines of scrimmage is the fundamental building block to winning games. The Emperor knows this and has ingrained it into the beliefs of the young Padawan. It takes time, patience, and a plan to build. In my humble opinion, the defense is ahead of schedule with a nod to what coach Pruitt recruited and what Kirby, Tucker, et al have added. The dumpster fire left for Pittman/ Chaney to rectify will take more time to find contentment. We will see how well both plans are progressing when the bizarro dogs come into town.

How in hell did Tuberville and I focus on the center way before you dudes.
    Damn. Always behind the chains.
    Consider this.
Fromm vs Eason? Maybe but I have another player and position in mind.
Eason had better get his preppy butt in gear re reads and checks. His biggest asset is his arm. The deep ball along the sidelines.
Here is the player I think had better get his motor running. Chubb!
Swift is on the verge of going by him. Why? He can hit the edge and crease.
Go back and look at those running plays to the left side. Watch for the cutbacks. Chubb can not get there and fill the lane.
