“These people’s comments do not represent the entire Georgia fan base.”

Nah… but maybe just enough of it.

A few hours later, in response to the play — Eason’s 10th since getting injured — a fan wrote this on a message board: “Skinny (Eason’s nickname) looked like he was standing there thinking about a beer and some (expletive) up in the third row.”

On a separate discussion board, another fan wrote: “Anyone else OK with Eason transferring now?”

“Yep !! He gone,” someone responded.

Last year, Eason’s calm demeanor was viewed as a “clutch” gene. This year, some fans perceive it as a lack of infectious energy when he is on the field.

For some, success isn’t sufficiently enjoyable unless you can kick somebody down while you’re chest bumping.  That’s not something I’ve only observed in Eason’s case, either.

  1. And now, thanks to the writer at the Macon Telegraph, Eason may actually find out about those negative message board comments. Otherwise, probably not.

I guess it’s every fan base….but it seems like ours can’t be happy unless we’re surrounded by a healthy dose of DRAMA. We’re 6-0 yet everyone wants to argue about who should start at QB, Smart vs Richt, black jerseys, UGA drug policy, etc.

    This stuff wears me out.

Many years ago, Stallings had one of the best defenses in the world, yet fans bitched about how many points they won by. UGA fans can be close, but Bama is at the top for fan nuts. UGA could go 14-0, though, and there would be bitching. No wonder coaches and players say to hell with this group.

I guess, unfortunately, UGA’s fanbase is like a lot of others: we have a small but loud subset of frontrunning, know it all, mouthy assholes. I would bet a kidney that the vast majority of them were loudly celebrating when Eason signed with UGA. Now? He’s last Christmas’s shiny toy, and they have a new shiny toy at QB. And, next fall, they’ll have another shiny toy, and maybe this year’s toy will go in the scrap box, too.

Eason didn’t do anything wrong to get demoted. He got hurt, and Fromm has played great. That said, Eason is one play away from being the guy again, and the season isn’t half over yet. Seems like our frontrunning contingent would remember that before they trash a kid who’s one of us.

I don’t have any mixed feeling on who should start – it should be whoever Kirby and Chaney say should start – and for a lot of reasons, I am good with Fromm. After all, while Fromm hasn’t been perfect, he has been very good and there is no reason to screw around with that right now.

However, this Mizzou game is a great opportunity to get some meaningful game snaps for Eason that he needs if he is going to help us. If we can open up an early lead, let JE play in the second quarter, and continue as long as his knee can handle it. Build up some confidence for him. Then build on that during the bye week, and then when we go south to slay the dragons we’ll go fully armed. Hoping Kirby/Jim thinks like this, too.

I’m glad to see this get some light. I’ve been shaking my head too. It’s really dumb to confuse clutch/focused/intense/serious with disconnected/distracted/loner behavior. As I watched the Alabama game there were many close up shots by tv that showed Hurts “flipping the switch” right before the snap. I could easily see that Hurts actually changes his focus and quiets his mind after he picks up the sideline signals. This is good stuff, not bad stuff, and I really hope Eason gets to come out of this season with some satisfaction.

Finally have legit depth at QB again and we are trying to run it off. We talk about competing with Bama but, like the team, the fanbase has to learn how to have nice things. Bama expects to have a stable of 5 stars and expects them compete for playing time or washout.

I sincerely hope all our players, QBs included, play every, every other, or every third game. Not that every one should get a trophy but because they are competing so hard and beating the guys ahead of them every week in practice, the coaches are forced to constantly reshuffle the depth chart. Those that feel entitled or don’t want to compete every day can transfer wherever they like because if they can’t or aren’t willing compete on Tuesday they won’t compete on Saturday.

Excellent comment, we are very fortunate to have one QB playing well, and another capable, if needed. Why would we attack what everyone wants, and every champion needs: quality depth at all positions?

Unity has become a unique quality in this country over the past several years, why should conversations on sports be any different? If you don’t endorse my guy, you are the enemy, sometimes sounds like all the black/white, left/right, etc. discussions I hear everywhere. UGA fans are generally united behind the team but there are always the extreme agitators stirring the pot. Like the nutcase shooters that show up much too frequently, don’t give them a platform, it encourages more bad behavior. This will always be a part of the internet message boards, don’t feed the trolls, or idiots.

I like what we are doing on the field of play, and hope both QBs get some meaningful reps during Saturday’s game for the coaches to evaluate what is best going forward. Remember, there were anti-Fromm guys before Labor Day who wanted him kept off the field and not prepared for stepping in mid-season in case something happened to Eason. I thought that was shallow thinking then, and not giving Eason a chance to get his confidence back, or shake the rust, is narrow thinking now. But the split over embracing both began before the season and is responsible for some of the divide.

We don’t need to be in two camps, we should embrace all who want to compete. Practice shows who gets the opportunities, but Saturday’s show who took advantage of those opportunities and deserves the trust the most. Simply said, we need two well prepared QBs, competing, and seeing some quality playing time.

It really doesn’t matter how many camps the fanbase is in. It is the locker room that matters and how the coaches can keep the team focused. Some say if you have 2 QBs, you have none, but SOS switched QBs and then switched back while winning.

Yet the point remains that Eason as a sophomore is less productive than a true freshman, and Eason was the high school player with more talent and accolades. Was Eason overrated? Was Fromm underrated? Is Fromm the harder worker with more leadership intangibles? In other words, are Eason’s wounds self-inflicted, or is Fromm just a better college quarterback? None of us knows these answers and there is no point in speculating. My hope is that Eason can handle being a back up for now and keep working and not let his disappointment get the best of him.

          Based on what?

Jesus this is the type of shit the Senator is talking about. Eason didn’t have near the talent surrounding him last year along with a first year coaching staff. You are basing your assessment off of 3 series in the opener and a few snaps in garbage time after being out close to a month.
In case you have forgotten by this time in his Freshman season Eason had already won one game at the end (mizzou 400 yds passing in his first road game) and should have won another against the Vowels. But by all means let’s trash the kid.

Fromm hasn’t had to do anything but hand the ball off and occasionally throw. 7/11 for 84 yards isn’t exactly lighting it up. He should have had 3 INT’s against UT.

Fromm has done what he has been asked to do but don’t fool yourself into believing that he is winning games for us. He hasn’t had to and until he is put in that situation we won’t know if he can. Fromm for all intents and purposes is Buck Belue.

          • UGA85

I guess mainly based on the fact the Fromm is starting and Eason is the back up. Kirby, to his credit, starts his best players. If Eason were better than Fromm, he would be starting. And I don’t think the knee is a factor anymore. Why is this so upsetting? Why so defensive about it? I am not trashing anyone.

            Like

            • bulldogbry

That’s fair, Kirby will start whomever is playing better. And I don’t care who starts, but I think we would see a better version of Eason if he were playing with the 1’s.

Fromm has played well and the team is winning. We also knew we could most likely win against UT and Vandy (and Mizzou) running the ball with a few timely passes to keep the defense honest. Eason also hasn’t played in a month. It would be extremely poor Coaching to throw him out there to start with no live action snaps.

How did I trash Fromm? I love the kid. He has done all that has been asked of him so far this year. Which is handoff and throw 10-15 passes a game.

My point is that he hasn’t been asked to win a game with his arm. When the time comes can he do it? I don’t know the answer and neither do you.

Eason has already done it behind a shitty Oline and with a lot less talent. I’m not saying he needs to start but he does need to get significant snaps in case Fromm can’t get the job done.

Regardless of who can and can’t do what there is no reason for our own fan base to trash this kid and wish for him to transfer.

I think what bulldogbry meant was, that it would be impossible to grade Easons performance as a sophomore based on about a half dozen plays in the App St game and a few trash minutes versus Vandy. And then compare that to Fromms six games. There just isn’t enough data to compare Easons sophomore performance to Fromms freshman year.

It’s not bashing to say “Eason doesn’t look happy.” It’s not bashing to say “Eason wasn’t receptive to encouragement by his teammates.” That is readily observable behavior if you watch the Vandy replay.

The takeaway: Who can blame him? He’s always been the man and now it appears he’s not. He did not commit to UGA to be a backup. Bashing is taking a understandable response Eason’s part and saying, “Hit the road, punk.”

A productive response on Eason’s part is to go in there and compete and prove he IS the man. I truly believe if he does, he will start. I think this staff’s allegiance is to the one who gives us the best chance to win. I’m not kin to either one of them — that’s my position. And if Justin Fields comes in next year and beats them both out, so be it. As long as the Dawgs are in the best position to win.

Remember that college for a 5 star is just a training ground. The business of football is that Eason has all the tools to be a great QB at the next level and from a business standpoint there are too many schools out there that would give their left nut to get him. If, at the end of the year Eason is still behind Fromm it will be a business decision for him to stay or transfer. If Kirby is not a total Saban and the kid wants out Kirby won’t stop him or restrict him except from SEC schools.

We’ve seen a healthy Eason for 3 series to start the year, and then twice in garbage time behind the backups. We don’t know if he’s healthy or not. And stating as fact what the kid’s demeanor is based on what you see on TV? Wow. That’s the stuff the article is talking about. No one knows how Eason is handling this, and arm-chair psychoanalysis from a television is just making shit up.

All we know about Eason is that he was the starter, and the coaches said he had improved. Beyond that, we don’t know a thing about Eason.

As for Fromm, he’s played great and has undoubtedly improved from the beginning of the season. I love seeing him out there and love his confidence. He reminds me of Buck Belue (and that’s a good thing in my mind). I’d also guess that the coaches are running pretty much the full offense now. It’s also possible that Fromm has passed the point where Eason was to start the season, but nobody knows that except the coaches.

All this stuff about “Eason just needs to worry about how much Powerade Fromm likes”, or “You could tell from the TV that Eason was pouting”, or “He should just go ahead and transfer”, or all the other crap (much of it worse) is BS. We need them both engaged, and we need to support both. It IS possible to revel in the success of Fromm while still supporting Eason and wanting him to succeed.

Man, you are over the top engaged emotionally in this subject, look at the number of comments you have made on this subject the past few weeks. It doesn’t matter who starts to me, but it seems to for you. This is actually one of your more balanced on the subject.

For all the reasons you mention above about people making unfair/slanted comments about Eason, many of you on the other side have made derogatory comments about Fromm that have a similar lack of foundation. This despite results on the field that have gotten us not only to 6-0, but done so without our #1s playing only one game in the 4th quarter. You can dawgrade Fromm’s performance, but this offense is clicking on all cylinders. It isn’t like Fromm went all Tonya Harding on Eason, he simply answered the call when stepping up….and seemed prepared, thankfully.

I fully agree both need some quality reps this week before we go into the bye week. If not, I would prefer we stick to the one known quantity in this discussion. If Eason brings another dimension nto the discussion that offsets what we have seen, start him against Florida. It is an approach both sides should adopt, and let the coaches determine from what they see on Saturday, and next week during bye week practices. I worry about those who don’t accept doing what is best for UGA, and prefer their point of view from the discussion win out. It doesn’t matter, at all. Just win baby.

You haven’t hurt my feelings at all, just saying that you have been vocally one-sided about this….and that is not usually the way you evaluate things. It looks emotional, and biased, for some reason. I am the guy, all along, who said we should get two guys ready in case someone was unable to go. I still feel that way, even though many wanted Fromm Red-shirted regardless. Unless there is something going on at practice that we haven’t seen indicating an all new Eason versus last season, I like what I see from the new guy so far.

That is an opinion, and one that doesn’t count for much at all. But I strongly feel we should not risk losing what we have grown to be, you simply don’t get that many chances to rise to the top, and we have major momentum in 2017. I will say, the only voices I hear suggesting we make a change is the strong, pro-Eason contingent among the UGA fan base. Don’t hear it on any national shows, and don’t hear it any team message boards, not anywhere else. Of course, none of those opinions matter either.

Sorry about the snark, Mac. We both want the same things, a Dawg team that crushes their opponents (especially Florida) and I suspect we even agree on the QB situation, in that Kirby will make the right call with that.

I just get pissed when I think people are hasty to cast off a 5* QB that was one of our few bright spots last year because we have a new, excellent QB. Liking one over the other is okay, except that some of the remarks I hear just bug me. I heard a train load of fans before the ND game saying how happy they were that they wouldn’t have to see Eason overthrow another receiver, and that he could go ahead and transfer. Similar comments here. Seems a shitty way to treat someone that is in many ways similar to the freshman Stafford, taking a beating for the team.

Yeah, other people put down Fromm, though I honestly don’t think I have. It’s true I was still wait and see after the App State and ND games, but that was as much because the coaches weren’t asking him to do much. They seem to have taken the reins off now and he’s done well. I’d have zero problems cheering Fromm (or anyone) the rest of his career.

For the record, I feel the same way about people dumping on Brice Ramsey. Personally, I think all of this is part of our larger tendency to demonize what we perceive as our opponents (except it’s okay to demonize FL). It’s the “I’m not only right, but I crushed you” mentality that I really hate.

Bravo, another successful troll by the Macon Telegraph and Get The Picture. 6-0, but lets focus on some fan opinions about our players.

If Eason’s mental state is so fragile that he is concerned about message board morons, then he should go ahead and quit. This is the kind of stuff you sign up for when you go to a major program.

Pretty foolish. Hutson Mason was also an excellent game manager. But when the plan broke down in Jacksonville and he needed to start slinging it to keep us in it, he just wasn’t that kind of guy. From hasn’t been tested like that yet so we just don’t know.

Meanwhile, Eason’s was tested like that multiple times last year and was at his best in those situations ( especially against Tennessee and Mizzou). Game management wasn’t really even a possibility last year with that line (even if plays were called as if it was).

Point is, don’t assume the coaching staff isn’t aware of that. There’s no reason to pull Fromm yet at all, but this ain’t over until Fromm passes that test. Till we get behind and are forced to throw when they expect it late in the game and he delivers.

I wish we had flung it around last game and maybe this game, with both QBs behind the #1’s to get the rust out. I’d rather figure it out now in live game situations, than have to figure it out later at the end of a game when we’re down two scores.

I don’t have a problem with his demeanor but it certainly wouldn’t be shocking if he transferred. With Fields coming in next year UGA will have 3 QBs that could start almost anywhere & I just don’t see all 3 staying if they could play somewhere else.

  32. Neither QB is a finished product. Eason has the bigger upside because he has the bigger arm. I would suspect that he also has a better grasp of the playbook, can read defenses better, and is better prepared to get the offense in the right play. However, he has a slow trigger that big QBs with big arms often deal with. Because they can fling it, they are a tad bit slower to make decisions. It was nice of Kirby to take the blame for Eason’s sack/fumble, but he held onto the ball for what felt like forever. His reads were covered, but he has to get the ball out of his hands even if it is to throw it away. If he can get a little quicker in his reads and get the ball out faster (which I think he will as he matures and gets more confident in the playbook), he will be drafted by some sorry NFL team and make millions.

Fromm hasn’t had to read the entire field, but so far that hasn’t been a problem. He doesn’t have the arm Eason has, but he has a much quicker release… because he has to. I think Fromm is a little more… not careless, but maybe less careful with the ball than Eason was last year. He has a long way to go reading defenses, changing the play, etc., but he doesn’t seem to be lost on the field like most true freshmen are. He is decisive. He knows where he wants to go with the ball, even if he misses wide-open wheel routes. He knows enough of the playbook that Chaney hasn’t been handcuffed and one-dimensional like they were at times last year. Also, the OL is greatly improved, and the defense gives a much larger margin for error than Eason had last season.

The problem with having multiple great QBs is that unlike, say, LB where you can play several throughout the game, you usually only play one QB to keep your offense in rhythm. That’s unfortunate because there isn’t a wide gap between Fromm and Eason. They each deserve to play because they are both super talents.

Kirby has f*cked this up. Eason was still gimpy vs. UT, so made sense to stick with Fromm and let Eason take a few warm-up snaps at the end, but if Eason’s knee is fine, then he should have started him against Vandy. The job was his, he earned it, and he’s the guy we’re going to need for our tougher closing stretch. By letting Fromm start, he gained nothing. Fromm is still a freshman and those reps were more meaningful for a rusty Eason than for the backup QB (Fromm). If Fromm starts against Mizzou and Eason is completely healthy, then Kirbs is coaching with his heart not his head…that “gut feel” he referenced. Eason’s the guy to beat FL, AU and be in the pressure of the SECCG. Fromm’s awesome…for a freshman. Can’t ride him all the way to the end, and letting Eason rust away won’t get him ready either.

Then again, that Kirby…he’s a sly one.

How has he screwed this up? Perhaps he should have played Eason after we went up 28-7 against Vandy and let him have a chance to knock the rust off and show he has grown over the past 10 months. I can see that as a missed opportunity, but his job is to secure wins, and right now Fromm has proven to not only be a winner, but has brought a new dimension to the position with the zone read. Let’s win the game first, than manage bruised egos.

I want two capable QBs ready at all times, but if Kirby says the guy who gives us the best chance to win starts, he has already spoken. This isn’t the same inexperienced QB who did not win the start against Appy, we have game film now, and KS sees all the practices.

I’m not sure how hurt Eason is at this point. If he doesn’t play much except garbage time against Mizzou, I have to believe Kirby has made his decision. The only way Eason is taking the job back after the Mizzou game is by necessity (injury or Fromm having an off day). If Eason is better than Fromm at this point, then that’s an exciting thing to consider, given how well Fromm has played recently.

I find it truly repugnant that people are dogging Jacob Eason. People can be real assholes. Personally, I hope Eason stays at Georgia and is given an opportunity to grow into his high potential. Jacob for his part needs to do a gut check, change some behavioral issues and buckle down. If he can fix what’s between the ears he’ll be a stud for UGA.
