So, is Georgia a youngish old team, or an oldish young team?

    Yep, I admit I’ve already been thinking about what the team will look like next year (2018) and it scares me. Most of the defensive standouts are probably leaving in the spring, most of the depth will still be around so I have begun to reconcile the two and no matter how great the team finished this season I will be a nervous wreck next fall. If I were privy to the locker room dynamics I would probably be lore optimistic so this little blurb was timely for me.

      There is no doubt that we will lose a TON of senior leaders who have played a vital role in establishing the culture as well as some early entries to the NFL. That said, there will be plenty of talent to replace what is lost. That said, it is way too early to assume anything about 2018, and good coaching staffs are capable of replacing guys and improving in other areas where guys return.

      Bellamy’s quotes are telling. They are yet another installment in Kirby successfully teaching his players to focus on the process of doing their job rather than the overall outcome, but if you have listened closely to the players, it does not stop there.

      I think what most people miss is that Kirby (having learned from Saban) has “unitized” every players assignments into discreet steps that collectively create successful execution. It’s not just “own your box” and “play physical”, but actually teaching players how to do it, which combined with their athleticism is what has lead to our great results in 2017.

        I’m optimistic. The Dawgs have played a lot of young talent and that will pay off next year, and now that the recruiting pipeline seems to be filling up, it bodes well for the future.

        But MD, don’t most all position coaches teach the molecular level hand and foot placement, leverage, eye discipline, etc.?

    Hopefully, we are well on our way to balanced classes where we don’t have to worry about who’s leaving. If Kirby solves that problem over the long term, we don’t play Whack-a-Mole with the roster every spring. Win big and the next men up get valuable experience before they are on the front lines the following season.

    Wait a minute, last year were didn’t have talent and some of our staff sucked. Now we signed around 20 something people and both are better? I’m lost.

      Even Chubb and Sony have mentioned buying in to the culture change in Athens…having a full boat for full contact practice has made things much better too.

    The 2018 team looks to be pretty stout. The D front 7 will have some good starters and depth: Walker, Marshall, Ledbetter, Hawkins-Muckle, Rochester, Clark, Rice, Taylor, Patrick, Grant, et. al. That’s not bad, even if we do lose Trent and/or Roquan. Solid secondary of JR, Baker, McGee, LaCounte, Gibbs, etc.

    OL should have 4 starters return, plus most backups. TEs Nauta, Woerner, & Harris all return. All WRs except Wims return. Swift, Holyfield, & Herrien are a good group of RBs to build on. We’re poised to have two 5-star QBs at a minimum. Need a new FB, punter and snappah.

    Yes, we have great leadership now. But next year’s team is gonna be good too. That’s not even listing a lot of sophs and freshman already on this team, nor the contributions from what is likely to be another top 5 signing class.

      Throw in that @ LSU seems to be our most daunting road trip, and I think we are in for another very good year.

      Not to count chickens, but if this season plays out the way we’d expect, this is the best shape the program has been in since before the Jan Kemp fiasco. Let’s hope it’s being done a little more above board this time.

    It’s impossible to understate what a huge deal it was for that group of Chubb/Michel/Carter/Bellamy to decide to come back for their senior year. It showed a “buy in” to what CKS was trying to instill. They will forever be 4 of my favorite Dawgs.

    Sorry in advance for hijacking this thread, but I want to thank the Senator for posting Justin Fields’ words in the Quote of the Day box. While we’ve all been talking about the current and future QB situation, I was wondering how Fields felt it. After reading his words, it certainly sounds like he knows what he’s coming into and is looking forward to the challenge. I agree that competition is going to make the team better. HBTD!
