Halfway through the season, a Mark Richt vs. Kirby Smart debate for national coach of the year looks possible
— Matt Brown (@MattBrownCFB) October 16, 2017
“And Georgia fans, don’t be turds. Enjoy this. Soak it up. It’s awesome. If you don’t win this year, it’s still not a failure. It’s a heck of a run. Back-to-back in the Playoff era hasn’t been done. So, to ask for a third I feel like it’s gluttonous. I feel like it’s not OK. But we’ll be in the mix.”-- David Pollack, On3.com, 5/9/23
It’s a fair debate….not one which I am willing to entertain at this point.

If the best coach is Saban, then the answer is…Saban. But I’ll grab some popcorn and watch this thread explode.

If both teams manage to go undefeated they can give it to whomever they like. Miami still has some rough games coming up, and I don’t think they’re as equipped to run the table as Georgia, so it will probably be rendered moot.

I was firmly in the camp that it was time for him to go. I also firmly believed he would do well wherever he went next. Neither of those thoughts were conflicting in my head.
I do think he learned a lot of the lessons he needed to learn (roster management, control over the program, etc) towards the end, but it was at the point where the damage was already done, and I didn’t believe he would be able to turn the ship yet again.
However, I definitely thought that if he went somewhere new and applied those lessons from the beginning, there was no reason he couldn’t be wildly successful again.

See, I think he would have turned it.. I think he was right in the middle of that turn… but UGA was not going to make the time commitment it would have taken to complete it.

Been trying to turn it for 12 years…..but not this debate again….just ignore. 🙂

I think UGA was going to make the time commitment, but then Kirby’s resume floated.

I agree with you – but not because Richt needed a change of scenery; but because UGA needed a change of scenery. The AA would have never given Richt the amount of leverage they gave Kirby day one on the job. I’m absolutely thrilled for both guys for the success they’re experiencing right now.

Co-coaches of the year…with the former HC’s players. Seems pretty even and there aren’t any tangible differences at this point. We’ve looked a little better but that’s not much evidence.

I’ve watched every game by both teams this year and I think UGA has looked significantly better in every aspect. That said, I’d like for both teams/coaches to keep having success throughout the season.

Me too MD, but believe Dawgs would win comfortably if they played. Kirby inherited a much more talented team than did CMR, plus he has lost several key players for season.

So, is COTY for the best or the one who does the most with what he has? Saban is “best”, the other remains to be identified.
I would not want to see a UGA-UM Orange Bowl. Just wouldn’t. The lead up would be horrific, brutal and self serving for the network. No. Please no. And you know that’s the matchup they want for that very reason. Sell the sizzle!

It’s more of a popularity award for the hot name at the moment. Saban probably deserves it every year, but they’re not going to give it to him every year.

I’d rather see the game in the Sugar Bowl myself….

I love this for no other reason than it really is awful for McGarity and that makes me happy.

Why is it awful for Mcgarity?

Because he is who he is.

Sooo…
Mcgarity fires Richt, under whom the program had struggled for a number of years. He then hires Kirby, who after predictably struggling in his first season, in his second has the team ranked #3 in the country. Gotta say, Kirby is making the AD look pretty sharp for making the hire right now.

I believe you mean “struggled” for a number of years. 10 win seasons aren’t struggles. A plateau perhaps but this was not a struggling program.

The delusional CMR-phile never escapes me. I paid $$$$ to sit on the 50 yard line at Sanford Stadium in the pouring rain in 2015 – and witnessed a STRUGGLING/PATHETIC program get a beatdown of a lifetime. The final straw with me. The firing of CMR was long overdue. Carry on.

I assume you refer to the 2015 Bama-UGA game with the score of 38-10. A bad defeat but certainly not the “beatdown of a lifetime.” What did you expect was going to happen? Georgia was a finesse team playing a power team in a driving rain. As soon as I saw the weather forecast I knew the Dawgs were in trouble. Plus, didn’t Bama win the National Championship in 2015? It’s not like the Tide had a bad team the Dawgs lost to in that game. I was more upset with CMR blowing the Tech game with the pooch kickoff, plus a host of end of game screw-ups going back years where CMR snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. CMR needed to go because he had used up all his goodwill with the Georgia fan base. I wish him well in his new job but I am glad he’s gone. But the Georgia program was neither struggling nor pathetic when CMR left.

LV had UGA a 2.5 point fav….rain or no rain. It was as a complete & utter beatdown as I have ever witnessed. Pathetic. Jax was pathetic. GA Sou was pathetic. And GT. What did those four games represent Mayor? Certainly not trending upward….sheesh.

We on the same page, TX, but read the good Mayor’s comment all the way through.

I knew it as well Mayor. We had no chance in a mud bowl, and the fans were never going to a factor either at that point. I don’t know what the outcome was going to be, but it would not have been anything like that. No one will ever know.

He wants avoid that matchup like the plague and scuttlebutt is that he would veto any UGA v UM matchup in a bowl game, but he probably doesn’t get that option on a top tier bowl and definitely not a playoff bowl.

There are so many IFs left to play out. So any debate will have a lot of qualifiers….
That being said, IF Georgia and Miami both appear in their respective conference championship games and finish the regular season with the same number of losses, I’d actually lean toward saying Richt accomplished a tougher feat. Not because he played better teams overall, but because he played teams that were closer to this own in terms of talent and coaching.
Kirby should win the East and appear in the SECCG this year. No ifs ands or buts. Miami, however, even at this point in the season is no foregone conclusion.
When is COTY given? Is it after conference championship games?

Agreed. I think Richt had a lot less to work with. He still to struggle with the half empty stadium every Saturday and selling that to recruits.

To soon to tell. I do think that Miami has been hit harder by the injury bug than we have and I’m pretty sure they don’t have the depth to run the table. If we can get our walking wounded back and don’t let up we have a much better chance of running the table.

I agree, based on how Miami has looked, and their injury situation, I don’t think they will do any better than 9-3 or 10-2. Doesn’t look like a championship team to me. Good job in pulling Ws out the past two weeks, but they look like the 3rd best team in the ACC. They would not match up well with UGA, imo, they should hope for playing a lesser opponent and continue to build some depth.

Not you, Dawgphan. You were about as wrong as you could possibly be.
Surprised you are chiming in.
You officially gave up on Kirby 3 weeks in to 2016. Seems like I remember something along the line of “I’m ready to pull the plug on the Kirby experiment”, and “I’d like to leave his ass in a ditch on the way back from Columbia, Sc”, as well as “he’s a dick to the media”.
Of course the all-time classic is when you called him out for “beta male” behavior. You of all people. Hilarious.
I don’t need to even mention just a couple weeks ago you wrote you wouldn’t even piss on most Dawg fans if they were on fire. Nice, you self hating “phan”.
Also, your past recruiting alogorithms that tried to prove it was going really good were stupid.
Too bad you can’t enjoy the best start to a season maybe in Dawg history!!

If a coach is being considered as COTY for improving upon what another potential COTY left behind, he’s probably the better coach and should be the COTY.

Interesting debate – fun, even. But as many have said before, Richt to Miami and Kirby to UGA has been good for both men and both schools so far. I remain a Richt fan, particularly the man himself rather than the coach … But I’m convinced that the Sic Em 17 recruiting class and the upcoming class (which still has huge potential) would not happen under Richt. We’d get a few of those players but not enough. Jimmies and Joes first, then coach em up. And to throw some more gas on it … Does anyone think Richt would have earned a verbal from Justin Fields at this point? Really?
LikeLike
I’m not sure Richt would have offered Justin Fields at this point. He might have felt comfortable with the qbs he had on roster and not pursued him.

JC – that sums up Richt in one word “comfortable”

On the other hand, he might have had Trevor Lawrence committed to UGA instead of Clemson.

Actually, no. If you know the background story, Smart had a ton of work to do when he got here to get back in it for Lawrence. The new staff did a phenomenal job just to make it a somewhat close decision.

Do tell. I have no idea what the background was; only that he was a major priority for us at one point.

I really really don’t want to see a UGA-Miami match up in the post season. It would re-ignite all the nastiness that we’ve experienced the last few years. I say go Georgia and go Miami. Change appears to be working for both parties.
