Damn, this is great.
You know UT put more on the table than that.
What was SOD, like the Vols’ seventh pick? What’s the over/under on the number of offers they make this time before they get someone to bite?
Damn, this is great.
Source: NC State coach Dave Doeren has turned
down Tennessee. The Vols made an offer but NC State countered at $3M a year for 5 years. Whether the Wolfpack upped the offer more is not known. So where does UT turn? Chad Morris? Kevin Steele? Jeremy Pruitt? Lane Kiffin? Tee Martin?— Jimmy Hyams (@JimmyHyams) November 30, 2017

Doerun was close to being run out of Raleigh 2 years ago. He seems to have things moving in the right direction there. I believe he worked for the chancellor at Northern Illinois. $3m goes a long way in the Triangle without the pressure cooker of Knoxville. I don’t blame him one bit for considering his current gig a better situation than UTK.

ee, I live here like you do and actually work at NC State. What a difference a year makes, eh? 11 months ago, they were ready to ride Doeren’s ass out on a red-hot rail.
I personally think State was dumb as hell to give him a raise and extend his contract. Over 63 games, he’s three games over .500 and his record in the ACC is even more dismal than Butch’s SEC record was. Yes, he had a decent year this year, but we’ll see what next year is like with the talent leaving the team after this season.
I would have LOVED to see DD go to Tennessee. I personally think State could do better with an up-and-coming coordinator than Doeren, but apparently that ship has sailed and State will be stuck with him for five more years — because I’d be REAL surprised if anyone else gets desperate enough to come knocking on his door again.

Yeah, the State folks I know were practically begging UT to take him off their hands. And that was despite this year’s 8-4 mark.

I lived there for 14 years … we moved back to the Atl 2 years ago. I didn’t want to change my handle and look like a sock puppet. 🙂
My question about the NC State program is what is the ceiling of that program. It’s not a national championship caliber program. It’s probably not even an ACC championship caliber program with Clemson, FSU, Miami and Virginia Tech in the neighborhood. Could they make the ACC championship once every 7 years or so? Probably.
But I agree with you … I don’t think Doeren is going to get a big shot again.

I’ve been here six years, and I sure as hell never paid any attention to State football before coming here, but near as I can ascertain, this year pretty well is the ceiling for NC State. I’d heard it was a basketball school when I came, but they’ve sucked ass at that since I’ve been here as well.

They had a damn good team in 2002 with Philip Rivers and that crew. They demolished ND in the Gator Bowl that year (and finished top 15 or so).
I went to my first State game that year against FSU at Carter-Finley (which isn’t a bad stadium except it’s ACC small). I wore red with a Georgia cap of course. It was right after we beat Auburn on 70X Takeoff to win the East. A State fan behind me asked, “What are you doing here? We don’t play real football.”

Holy crap. First the Duke coach, then Purdue coach, and now the NCST coach all have said no to UT. My gosh this is beautiful. Here’s the thing, regardless of who UT eventually hires, rivals can use this against them in recruiting, saying that UT’s coach was literally their 11th choice.
I suggest UT reach out to the following to gauge their interest: Joe Lee Dunn, Billy Brewer, Galen Hall, Woody Widenhofer, Jackie Sherril, Ron Zook, Ray Goff, Dave Shula, Curly Hallman…who else am I missing?

Steve Spurrier, like the Spider to the Fly, recommended Tee Martin as coach. That could be an emotional hire to put out the flames.
However, Tee dosen’t have experience for the head job and has just been a position coach really, although his title says OC. There’s about a 10% chance it could turn out Dabo Swinney and 90% it will turn out Ray Goff.
This is a toxic brew of desperation by elite boosters and administrators trying to appease the unwashed and keep their jobs and a mouthbreathing fanbase desperate for a tie to the glory days, all cheered on by cynical opportunists by Clay Travis.
In the zero-sum game of college football, it is good for UGA. Its a slow motion train wreck for TN though. Its almost sad.

I would have thought Ray except that he had a heart attack a while back (treated at St. Mary’s according to billboards that were up in Athens a year or two ago). Not sure someone with that medical history would want to coach again, especially in Knoxville. I know Ray expressed a desire to coach again when he was fired. Say what you will about his coaching skills but, I think he’s too nice a person to survive the pressures at UT right now. If I were putting money on it, I’d say it’s going to be Tee Martin. He may be the only one who would willingly take that position right now.

Goff left behind enough talent for Donnan to go 10-2 one year. If they got the same out of Martin at Tennessee, they’d be better off than they are right now.

UGA’s last five head coaching hires spanning over 50 years included four assistants with no hc experience and a guy from a 1AA school.. I’m thinking that this is not as easy as it looks and they’ve made a lot harder than it should be. Maybe they should call Fulmer, apologize, and offer him the job.
