Jimmy Sexton sleeps well after a kill.

Pruitt’s reportedly getting a six-year deal worth about $24 million.

Kirby is about to make so much bank it isn’t even funny.

Wonder what that buyout figure will be.

Smart has to be getting a new contract at closer to $5/year, right?

I also wonder if the new early signing period and the playoffs are going to step on some toes.

Now the pressure is really up to get these coaches signed right after the season. Many of the most desired coaches are going to be in the playoffs.

This is not good news for us. utk is hiring a coach who probably has fewer than 15 losses in his 10 year college career. People can trash him all they want, but the guy can coach a defense and recruit like the dickens. I do not want to see CJP on an opposing sideline, particularly in our division.

I didn’t realize that Pruitt was the HC at both Bama and UGA before taking the UT job. Again, IMO this has Peter Principle written all over it. I don’t think this will be a good hire for UT, though I will admit that the recruiting in the region has just become even more vicious. Smart, Dabo, Saban, Pruitt, etc. all fighting for the same top athletes is absurd.

Correct, Westy. This is exactly the thing I feared most–that the toothless bastards would back into a great hire. Pruitt is an excellent coach, driven to succeed. He’ll have UT back to contending for the SEC East by 2019, 2020 at the latest. For Georgia, other than Urban Meyer coming back to the SEC East, this is the worst thing that could have happened. Pruitt is an outstanding recruiter who knows the territory and will be going after the same kids that Georgia is recruiting–and he’ll get his share. Plus, he’s a winner who will not settle for less. The best hope for Georgia is that Fulmer gets in the way and screws things up so badly that Pruitt walks before turning UT around.

Mullen at UF scares me a lot more than CJP at UT. I respect CJP a ton, but he has no track record and is walking into a dumpster fire and to beat UGA consistently will have to out-recruit and/or out-coach Kirby. I don’t expect he will be able to do that at UT. Mullen also takes over a dumpster fire, but it’s just smoldering by comparison, and he has a great track record. And in contrast to UGA, UT, and USCe HC’s he’s an offensive coach which could give him an edge recruiting.

        • I still struggle to see this great track record that Mullen is packin’. He delivered ONE winning season out of nine with MSU.

We may use different adjectives to describe his record, but he elevated Mississippi State during a time Bama was dominant, Auburn mostly very good, and Ole Miss cheating left and right. He might feel like recruits are practically falling in his lap compared to the job he had selling Starkville

Missy State beat up on its 4 OOC teams every year plus its “Traditional Rival” from the East is Kentucky, which Mullen beat regularly. That’s 5 wins right there every season. When Arkansas started stinking Mullen beat the Hogs a lot, too.Good scheduling and weak opponents had a lot to do with Mullen’s success at MSU. Plus, he didn’t have to win all that much to make the Bizzaro Dogs faithful happy–one 10 win season while there. How does Mullen do at FU? I say likely a lot like he did at Missy State. He’ll beat his easy 3 OOC teams plus Vandy and UK regularly. He’ll split with FSU (win some years lose some years). He’ll beat UT regularly, at least at first. But I don’t really think he’ll do very well against UGA, and some other SEC East teams (Mizzou and S. Carolina) will give him a lot of trouble. I see a lot of 8-4/9-3 regular seasons in his future at FU. They’ll fire him from Gatorland by 2022 and start to say really nasty things about him after he loses the Cocktail Party 3 times in a row. Get a big buyout in your contract Dan.

That being said, I agree with you that UT may have backed into a great hire. There certainly is a significant risk that both Mullen and Pruitt succeed to challenge UGA quickly.

Fevered recruiting battles, for sure. But UT fans ought to be aware that two ANNUAL on-field battles in the Vols’ schedule have Son-of-Dooley-type stakes again for a HC Pruitt. Pruitt will have to face two former employers every year: UGA and Saban. My guess is perceptions of his success/failure each season will be much more heavily based on outcomes in those two Tough games (see: Derek D, as opposed to Bootch or Laner) as on anything else against other rivals (UF, UK, Vandy).

Six years for a first time HC at a major program? You’ve got to be kidding me. If Pruitt fails, UT will then be on the hook for Butch’s buyout, John Currie’s buyout, Pruitt’s buyout…plus whatever the cost of the new coach will be on top of that. Damn.

Given how UT has treated its last 2 HCs would you, as agent, be willing to negotiate, and recommend to your client, anything less than a long-term contract with a big buyout? I wouldn’t. And the UT people know that, too.

What does McGarrity agree to? 70 million over 10 with incentives and a huge buyout? If we go 2-0 in January I think that’s about right.

Who will be on Pruitt’s staff?
Do not get bogged down in the dollars. The dollars are given now re culture and market.
It is all about the facilities, the recruits, staff, and players.
Apparently, long time friend and former Bama room mate Will Friend leaves CSU to join Pruitt plus Arkansas OC, possibly UGA’s Sherrer [could go to Bama as a DC], and Helton from USC.
Recruiting just got tougher for Kirby.
Time for McGarity to start locking down some assistants. Dawgs need to keep Coley and Sherrer.
Plus seems like a lot of distractions for Dawg players and coaches, awards trips and etc.
Plus coaches being poached from staff. Not happening at OU.

Focus for Dawgs program…OU game and recruits.
Remember, and this can not be stated enough now. Dawgs are one of 4 teams in national championship playoff.
Three of those teams [Bama, Clemson, & OU] are deemed in the media to be “national programs”. UGA at present is the outlier.
Urgent for UGA to move the bar, more so against the recent hires in SEC East.
Note the shift in former DC’s to HC in SEC East. Stoopes @ UK, Muschamp @ South Carolina, Pruitt @ UT, and Smart @ UGA.
