Does Georgia need an athletic director for the football program?

I really, really wish I could stop seeing these Greg McGarity comments.

“We had to learn what it meant to compete at that level,” McGarity said. “We needed some direction, too. We needed help in understanding what it took to compete at the highest level. He hadn’t been in the chair [at Alabama], but it was pretty doggone close to the head coach’s chair. I think Coach Saban had allowed him to learn and to be a part of the inner workings of his program.”

They’re paying a guy more than half a million dollars a year to learn from his newbie head coach how to run a football program successfully.

As I am wont to say, that’s a helluva way to run a railroad.

Hmmm …, I believe we read about Richt asking for more support, an indoor facility & having to pay some bonuses out of his own pocket. Only when the bootleggers started courting Kirby did he pay attention to what was needed.

Too bad he won’t support the other sports w/ the same level of commitment. How far has our tennis center fallen due to his negligence? What about the golf facility? Good thing he’s a gov’t employee, he can work until retirement w/out having to worry about performance.

It is like Dooley said, “Football is the goose that laid the golden egg.” What other sport pays it’s own way? Richt was a mealy mouth who took “no” for an answer. I doubt Smart does and this year gives him a stronger hand. That is, if they want to keep him around, if he continues to elevate the program as he has this year.

I still don’t understand the insistence on blaming Richt for his bosses’ actions.

        • @Napoleon: hey they have to hate somebody and Richt is their man to hate. Hell everything is or was his fault. NONE lies with the AD. And I am one who felt it was time for Richt to move on.

McGarrity is Williamson from Glengarry Glen Ross. He has a management title, but no one listens to or respects him.

I’d wager that Kirby has to go Ricky Roma on his ass periodically.

Georgia hasn’t had an athletic director since Dooley left. Adams pushed Dooley out and promoted a young puppet. Then after pantygate Adams brought in a lower level cost manager to maximize profits. It appears Morehead (or some others) dictated the Kirby hire because the baseball coach hasn’t been touched due to the buyout. Basketball has been in the same state as the end of the Richt term as well with no coaching change. I do think this year’s basketball team might be Fox’s best team and his recruiting has improved as well (2 commits in 2 weeks plus how Hammonds/Claxton/Hightower are playing)

How long was CMR with Bobby Bowden at FSU when the Noles were always at the top. Guess Coach Bowden pulled Coach Richt aside to explain how to run a program.
CMR should have forgot to be such a gentlemen and go into McGarity’s office and beat some senses into his head about a football program.
Oh, forgot was McGarity at UF all those years when the Gators were on top.
McGarity is such a clueless fuck. He is damn pitiful! An embarrassment to UGA. Would someone just tell him to shut up or do what the Gators did…hide him.
CMR’s regret, not listening to Pruitt a little more when the wine and cheese B-M crowd decided it knew best how to run a football program.
And what is all this “we” crap. Just the AD trying to horn in on KS and staff’s work and accomplishments.
Face it McGarity is a failure.

If you fire someone like CMR, you better make sure the next guy is successful or its your head on the chopping block. There was no way CMR could be fired and the next coach not given everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, he needed to succeed.

That’s not even the issue. According to McGarity, he had no idea what was even needed to succeed. That makes denying Richt’s requests look even dumber.

Do any of you ACTUALLY think the success this year is from having a freaking indoor practice facility? Face it, Richt was soft and Kirby has brought a whole new mindset to the program.

Is that you McGarity? The IPF isn’t important, even though Smart, Pruitt, and Saban will insist it is? Look, Richt had flaws, but toughness wasn’t one of them.

It is beyond blatantly obviois that lack of toughness was indeed on of Richt’s flaws. I don’t even know why people bother denying it.

The worst part about it is that 10 years from now, if our football program is finishing a decade of sustained success, McGoofball will go down in the history books as a great AD

The bottom line is that GM didn’t hire CMR. So there was bound to be either friction or unrest. CKS was hired by GM; so there will by loyalty. He will back everything CKS does. it’s as simple as that!

  12. Don’t hate McGarity but think he is very average and his ass got saved with Kirby coming in. That quote proves we were Bush league. Been that way for a long time.

That said, I don’t think it was his fault we didn’t field a team in 2011, 2012 SECC games.

I’m really sick of reading this. Not one of you can provide a single tangible shred of evidence that Carla Williams was a negative factor here. Y’all just say it because another racist dumbass said it so it must be true. Of COURSE the black woman was the problem. That just goes hand in hand with Obama starting the war on Christmas, right?

Either provide details beyond “everybody knows” or stop fucking saying it.

No fan of ADGM here, but I don’t have a problem with these comments whatsoever. Hell, I actually appreciate the honesty, whereas many other AD’s out there would have let their ego get in the way and try to take all the credit for the litany of changes that have taken place.

Not many people are privy to the inner workings of the top CFB program, so the fact that they were able to pick Kirby’s brain says more about Kirby’s experience working for years under Saban than it does any failures on ADGm’s part.

Again, not a ADGM fan at all; but I give him much credit here, and I’m really surprised that you would jump on him for something like this.

How could anyone give this empty suit credit for anything positive that has happened at UGA? I would change the Senator’s open sentence to: I really, really wish I would never hear McDoofus’ name in the same sentence with UGA’s athletic department, much less as the Athletic Director. He has been a failure since the start.

McGarity is the Peter Principle epitome, an empty gray suit – a popinjay and a walking PR disaster. It’s a wonder he didn’t go full blown John Currie on us – thank goodness for the neauvou riche Liquor Barons.

This guy is incredible. What was he doing all those years at Florida when they were winning championships under Spurrier and Meyer? Did he learn anything about what it takes to compete at that level?

And is this his excuse for basketball too? Did he learn anything from Billy Donovan?
