Today, in we get the politicians we deserve

Honestly, you can’t make this shit up.

A Washington Post column about Republican attitudes toward colleges on Friday includes an anecdote about Louisiana state legislators allegedly threatening funding for LSU if any player took part in the “take a knee” protests during the national anthem…

In the column, which ran under the headline “Why do so many Republicans hate college?,” writer Catherine Rampell describes a dinner in New York last month that “about a dozen” college presidents attended. Rampell introduces the LSU anecdote as an example of “showdowns with peacocking, publicity-stunting politicians.”

She writes: “A group of Louisiana legislators recently threatened to further slash public higher-ed appropriations — already down 43 percent per student since 2008 — if any student football players took a knee during the national anthem, according to Louisiana State University President F. King Alexander. (The threat was withdrawn after Alexander reminded lawmakers that LSU players traditionally remain in the locker room during the anthem.)”  [Emphasis added.]

I guess they’re too busy before the game getting liquored up in the club level to notice.

WAPO making fun of stupid Republicans. Yawn. What’s new? Should have saved this one for the Summer Doldrums. Back to football Sir. Word is it’s Bowl season and we have a game to play. Here’s to hoping Mayfield pulls a Sam Darnold.

I wish I could get past the feeling that our country is governed by a bunch of preening narcissts who are looking no further ahead than their next re-election campaign on both sides of the aisle. I wish I could, but I can’t. Being a native Louisianan, the behavior of those dopes doesn’t surprise me.

That said, Go Dawgs! Two more wins, baby. Two. More. Wins.

      • Some years ago I would run into an LSU professor at professional meetings. He had a standard opening for all his presentations in which he would point out that our country consists of 49 states and one Banana Republic, 49 states that operate under English Common Law and one under the Napoleonic Code. Haven’t enjoyed meetings quite as much since he retired.

  2. Hate to tell them, but there is going to be a reckoning sooner rather than later in college football. All the grandstanding in the world isn’t going to prevent it.

The university presidents, athletic directors, and conference commissioners can’t be whores for every penny they can get and expect their undercompensated workforce to not want to eat too. Especially in the world of social media when organizing and connecting is easier than ever. The players have a helluva lot more power than they realize.

    Stupid? Maybe. Shortsighted? Definitely.

I’ve always liked your style, intelligent and fresh. I suggest sticking with football, lest ye risk the perilous path of the knee taker.

Big time college football lays at the alter of donor money, not government funding. Want to take a knee? Have at it, but enjoy the fruits, are lack thereof, of your constituency. I’m thinking along the lines of your favorite desert destination.

Whether we’re Ignorant, stupid or whatever, college football and internet blogs that cover it will rise and fall with the wims of republicans like me.

Jeez. Judging from some of these comments, even here, folks seem to root for their political team first and foremost – merit be damned.

Can’t we all just agree that this one Louisiana congressman, threatening to withhold funding that affects hundreds of thousands of kids based on the actions of one football player (whether you agree with the action or not) is fucking stupid?

Sure I think a politician is stupid for making this sort of threat. My point is that it’s not the politicians one needs to worry about. College football is successful because of private donations – it is subject to a free market economy. You provide a product I like and I will buy it. You don’t, I won’t. You offend me, I’ll take my money elsewhere.

Whether one thinks it’s fair or not is absolutely irrelevant.

      Liked by 1 person

      • I’m afraid you’ve mistaken mockery for concern. Even LSU’s president, who’s got skin in the game, thinks the threat is moronic.

Ok Senator, so again, the larger issue i posit is that its not the politicians, it’s the donors.

What’s your thought on donors? Are they stupid if they don’t donate to a program if some kid(s) decide to take a knee? Do you predict them withholding en masse at UGA given said knee?

As for the Dolly Lama – it’s a tough thing to take huh? Living in the real world that is. You can jump up and down and demand someone owes you something or they must like the product or service your selling, but let me assure you, that’s not how it works. Nobody has to buy your product, they don’t owe you their money. If donors don’t like the knee, they don’t have to buy.

Good luck guys if you don’t think UGA players taking a knee wouldn’t affect contribution levels.

              • You’re not really familiar with the amateurism model are you? College football players (usually black and poor) are not allowed to profit from their abilities until a system in place (usually old, white men) are allowed to profit for 3 years first. To be fair, college basketball is even worse since the developmental phase is so much shorter.

But to suggest there is anything about college football rooted in the free market is a bastardization of the very notion.

It is naive to think this model is sustainable.

Eh, there are way too many laws and they write new laws because it’s what they think they’re supposed to do. We end up with solutions to all kinds of problems that don’t exist in reality and do exist in ideology. Stop with the laws and go back and get rid of a bunch more.

Says every Jehovah’s Witness. Interesting. You don’t strike me as particularly religious.

We all worship something. There’s only two choices we have in regards to worship and it’s either self or other. Free thinkers, like religious zealots, are a dime a dozen so don’t lose yourself in the din of the lowly here. You’re really not that unique.

“There is no such thing as not worshipping. Everybody worships. The only choice we get is what to worship. And the compelling reason for maybe choosing some sort of god or spiritual-type thing to worship—be it JC or Allah, be it YHWH or the Wiccan Mother Goddess, or the Four Noble Truths, or some inviolable set of ethical principles—is that pretty much anything else you worship will eat you alive. If you worship money and things, if they are where you tap real meaning in life, then you will never have enough, never feel you have enough. It’s the truth. Worship your body and beauty and sexual allure and you will always feel ugly. And when time and age start showing, you will die a million deaths before they finally grieve you. On one level, we all know this stuff already. It’s been codified as myths, proverbs, clichés, epigrams, parables; the skeleton of every great story. The whole trick is keeping the truth up front in daily consciousness.”
