“We got a little nap in and back to work today.”

Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad Georgia has this problem, but Kirby having to deal with the emotions spent winning the Rose Bowl as he gets the team ready for the Sabanator is a concern of mine.

“A very emotional game last night, which concerns me, and talked to the players immediately afterwards about not burning any more energy or emotion on that game and moving on,” Smart said.

Human nature would suggest that’s easier said than done.  But I wouldn’t bet against Kirby’s preparation skills at this point.

…and it didn’t appear that Bama had to use too much emotion in their game. Let’s hope we have enough just one more time.

I just got back to Atlanta and I’m emotionally and physically exhausted. Those guys are young, but it’s gonna be a real challenge. Short week… Massive stakes.

The only good thing is that AL isn’t an unknown like OU from a game planning perspective.

It’s a shame TV didn’t point out the crowd differences. It had to be close to 70% Dawg fans.

You’re right about the TV guys not saying anything about UGA crowd size, etc. I was wondering about the approximate breakdown of OU vs UGA fans.

Being there for the game, the tailgate, and the parade, it appeared 3/2 Georgia fans.

      Both schools were well-represented.

To be fair they did say the Rose Bowl sounds like Sanford Stadium in the 3rd quarter when the comeback got hot.

  4. Bama was more rested than us going into their game. Probably helped them. And we left a lot on the field, while they did not have that intense of a struggle against Clemson. So, recovery and re-energizing our guys will def be a challenge.

And Bam never even left their time zone…short trip to New Orleans…while coming back from left coast is tough. Huge difference in the way these teams will feel by now.

The real problem is the Dawgs lose a day for game prep because of travel from the west coast. Jet lag is real and it affects people more traveling west to east. Bama, on the other hand, never left the Central time Zone and spent the night in New Orleans after finishing playing in the Sugar Bowl. Saban is complaining about the short time for prep for the National Championship Game but Bama has an advantage.

I’m curious about the preparation in the first half of the Rose Bowl. though. Didn’t much seem like we knew what was going on.

Let’s hope Georgia remembers how the first half went while preparing this week and Bama remembers how they coasted to get redemption. Need some serious media bama dynasty rat poison laid down for 6 more days.

That’s already started. I heard some asshole on ESPN radio yesterday say he “couldn’t see how anyone would bet against Bama” in the upcoming game. Keep it up media.

As a fan, it’s going to be hard for anything to top last night’s game. It feels odd to view the national championship game as a letdown but it seems like it’s going to be. I really hope the players and staff have a different mindset than I do.

While the emotions were rough (a little, I guess), the game didn’t look all that physical. Okie ain’t LSU. Seeing that corner basically give up in the face of Fromm’s block on the last play gives the flavor. We’re healthier coming out of our game than Bama, for sure.

Team is in great physical shape with a full roster available (only missing Natrez as far as I know). There is a reason Georgia was the better-conditioned team in the Rose Bowl in the second half and overtime.

However, academic eligibility is always an issue at Georgia and spring semester classes begin January 4. Alabama’s classes begin January 10 (it’s a football school) so they have no academic eligibility issues for the game.

The bigger issue is how to maintain gap assignment on defense and contain a mobile quarterback. It appeared they finally figured it out in the Rose Bowl, but Alabama’s quarterback is faster and is more physical on his feet.

Defense can’t spend the first thirty minutes figuring things out Monday as points will be much harder to earn. Georgia again needs to take advantage of its special teams edge.

Alabama’s offense is pedestrian relative to Oklahoma. Not saying we roll or anything, just think that getting our offense rolling is more of my concern going into this game.

So, do you think these two coaching staffs know what the other is thinking? These two programs have the most familiarity of any in CFB. It will be interesting to see who is able to exploit the other or come out with a little different wrinkle. Mentor vs Protégé

And won’t we all be sick as hell of hearing about the whole “Mentor vs. Protege” angle by the time the game starts — and after it actually does start, we will be really damn sick of it. I mean, it’s a good story, but one you can only tell so many ways and times before it gets stale.

  13. On defense, Alabama is imposing. The thing is they did it to a Watson-less Clemson team. That made all the difference because Clemson could not move the ball until Bama was trading yards for time in the 4th quarter. Once the ball got to the red zone, Bama shut them down. They forced Clemson to become Alabama’s 4-minute offense. On offense, Alabama is Notre Dame with an SEC quality offensive line. Hurts is not the samer player without Junior calling the plays. Bama won comfortably because of the defense not the offense.

I don’t know if we can generate enough offense to force Hurts to beat us with his arm, but I look forward to seeing us try.

After seeing Rodney Anderson play I’d argue that he’s a better back than any of Bama’s backs. That’s not taking anything away from Bama’s backs but just stating a point we just finished playing a great one. Yes, he gashed is early but once we settled down we’re able to slow him enough, at least in my opinion.

My biggest concern in this game is the team not being in awe of being on the field with Alabama and being able to control emotion and settle in to the game earlier. Basically, I think we can play with them but the intangibles are what concerns me.

      Liked by 1 person

      • Anderson definitely impressed me (as did Oklahoma’s offensive line in the 1st half). Once we started defending the counter play, he wasn’t as effective (I think that was tied to Kirby & Tucker’s decision to move to more 4-man fronts).

I’m not concerned about the awe of being on the field with Alabama. We’ve been to Notre Dame, the SECCG, and the Rose Bowl. If we’re in awe of Alabama, we may as well give them the trophy and not play the game. I’m more concerned about our ability to move their defensive front and protect Fromm. 14 of Bama’s points came directly as a result of field position generated by turnovers. If we can’t generate a consistent running game and give Fromm time to throw, we won’t win. If we can, I think we’ll be celebrating on Monday night.

Say what you will about injuries, but we whipped the team that whipped ‘Bama. We can beat this ‘Bama team with this Georgia team this year. And that’s why we play the game that can do that next Monday – to prove that statement.

          • I definitely believe we can win. I think it’s going to be a tall order and will require our offensive line to play their best game of the season. Can we stay away from bad field position and repeated 3 and outs? Even if we get a first down or two before punting, we keep the defense fresh and give Cam a chance to flip field position. We can’t have multiple possessions like we did in 2015 where we run three plays and punt from inside our own 15.

Maybe it wasn’t as emotionally draining for Bama but the grind seems to have hurt them physically. I want to know what our practice schedule is. I’m thinking we have 1 physical practice. Kirby and staff have done a great job of taking care of these guys all year. We didn’t look too tired the other night.

So sad, this playoff crap. Just won perhaps the greatest game in the history of the greatest bowl game of all in the most dramatic way imaginable. And you really cannot afford to enjoy it. In a season where we beat Notre Dame and Oklahoma in addition to Florida, Tennessee, Auburn and Tech and now still have to play Alabama.

That’s a good point, Bob. In years past, we would right now be celebrating the game and looking for at least a share of the NC. I regret the playoff system..but it’s what we have ($$$$$$ talks). Still, it’s going to be exciting Monday night…if for no other reason than pissing off ESPN and the rest of America that it’s an all SEC show!.

Here’s the first suggestion for a betting game. How many times will the announcers mention UCF and even promote them as deserving of the #2 spot in the final rankings? And how often will we hear about the Big10’s wonderful bowl record?..(never mind that the SEC’s two best teams are in the playoffs, leaving the rest of the conference to face off against other conferences’ best).
BTW…I watched the Sugar. Auburn was uninspired and the OL mailed it in. On the other hand UCF was playing in their “Superbowl”. Gus looked clueless on the sidelines….his team just wasn’t in it. The good thing is most of the Barn fans are miserable with Georgia and ‘Bama being the matchup.

Agree on awburn mailing it in. And I was really surprised at all the empty seats. Seems like the Peach almost always filled the place up in the GA Dome.

Gus’s smack talk season came to an abrupt end with the secc body slam, and when the ink dryed on the massive new contract. In the end it seems Gus, his team, and many of the awbie fans didn’t give a flip about being there.

THIS is a TIGHT and TOGETHER Georgia team. THIS is as close as I’ve seen a team in a long time. They play with each other and for each other. Its set up about as perfect for us as it can be. We lost one and took it back and made defeat into victory and a SECC. That’s called character. We will have our boots on. And we will be playing in our backyard. Just sayin’

We may lost to Bama, but it won’t be because of looking back at this game. I’m not even sure if the players on the field knew they won on the Sony run at first. It looked like they were ready to go back to the sideline and keep going. They have completely bought in to what Kirby is selling, and for the first time in a while I feel comfortable in the fact he will have them ready come Monday. I also don’t buy the jet lag crap either. I was in the military in my 20’s & 30’s and came back and forth on occasion from Europe and Hawaii and after 24 hours I was good to go. All I have to say is Boom Mother Flippers!
