The inevitable national title game day post

It’s weird.  The only issue I’m consumed with angst about is how easily I’m getting in the stadium.  The prospects of the game itself haven’t tied my stomach in knots.  My head and heart haven’t been doing battle today as they have over much of the season.

Maybe that’s because I’m still on a Rose Bowl high. (Every time I watch the replay of Sony’s run to end the game, I’m reminded of how similar the way I felt when I saw it live was to the way I felt watching Robert Edward’s cathartic touchdown run in the 1997 Georgia-Florida game.  Woo!)

More likely it goes back to the feeling I’ve had ever since Georgia eviscerated Auburn in the SECCG, that feeling that I’m playing with house money.  It’s crazy to process how far this program has come in such a short time — if you for some strange reason don’t believe that, go back and read this post of mine from October, 2016 to put what’s happened this season in perspective — and what that says about where it’s going.  I’ve already gotten way more out of 2017 and the first week of 2018 than I expected before this season got underway. So whatever happens tonight is cool with me.

Okay, that’s not totally true.

No, it’s not that I expect a Georgia win and will be disappointed with the second loss of the season.  If I’m honest about the title game, my head thinks that you can’t go against a Saban team that knows what to do in a momentous game like tonight’s and my heart isn’t really putting up much of an argument in response.

However, believe it or not, that isn’t the main thing I’m hoping for when I watch.  What I really want is to feel that same flash, that same instant realization that hit me midway through the 2002 Georgia-Florida game, when it suddenly struck me that for the first time in over a decade, Georgia belonged on the same field with the Gators as equals.  Don’t get me wrong; the loss was disappointing, but it was such in a very different way than I’d been used to for so many years.

Alabama has been college football’s gold standard for a decade now and, even in the wake of the 2012 heavyweight match that was the SECCG, no one has looked at the Dawgs as being on equal footing with Saban’s teams since the disastrous 2008 blackout meeting between the two programs.  That’s the thunderbolt I want to be hit with tonight.  Give me a true sense that a new sheriff’s in town and even if Georgia walks out on the short end of a field goal difference (which happens to be my prediction, by the way), I’ll feel elated in a way I haven’t felt in many a year.

Rome wasn’t built in a day, but if Athens has turned elite in less than two years, I can handle that.  At least I think I’d like to try.

As always, feel free to jump in with your thoughts in the comments.  I’ll see you guys and gals on the other side.

  1. I really don’t want this to come down to a FG by Rodrigo. He has grown by leaps and bounds this year ( thanks Graduate Assistant Butler) but he still has that sliver of doubt when he steps up….To see otherwise be ample evidence of the identity change I believe you allude to. And for which I would be eternally grateful…… Cmon you hairy Dawgs, hunker DOWN one more time…….

I don’t really believe in karma, but is has felt like we have been paying for that one for decades.

Last week we got the hand on the ball, the bounce, and a freshman quarterback hitting really really tight throwing windows and the receivers actually, like, catching the damn ball.

And key blocks in key situations, and key stops when it had to be done.

    Hoping for the best tonight.

    Go Dawgs!

Also, I still have the dog suspenders I wore at the 1980 National Title game in New Orleans.

I was sitting in the end zone Herschel scored into, when Womack just destroyed the defender on the lead block, and I will wear them in his honor tonight.

Damn good dog, and sorry he is already gone.

      Glory glory!

That’s still one of my favorite plays of that game. Womack absolutely wasted that guy.

I just looked that one up, and watched the play a few times, and, you get a lead block like that, and it is just awesome.

As soon as Womack hit that block we were all jumping up and down in that end zone because the touchdown was inevitable.

Experience didn’t help Bama against Clemson last year and it won’t help them very much tonight. This team has played in big games already this year. The Dawgs are going to win this game, period.

I felt the same way about the “house money” thing until Rodrigo hit the fg to end the half in the Rose Bowl. Then, I was suddenly all in and really wanting this thing. Showing we belong on the field with Bama isn’t going to be enough for me tonight. I had a decade of “almost” and “if only” and, to be quite honest, I’ve had a belly full of it.

I want to win this game.

To borrow a popular refrain…”This ain’t Dodge City and Saban ain’t Bill Hickok”…. we are no longer the team that lost to Auburn the first time….we are the team that manned up and beat Auburn and then OU….have a little faith…:)

Your comment on “looking like they belong” was my only goal for this year’s team, but it related to the SECCG, which I assumed would be against Bama. That game is just coming two games later and includes an amazing win against OU (which if you told me would happen after seeing how they handled OSU way back in week 2, would have blown my mind). After playing out the season, this Bama team is more than mortal and we 100% have a legit reason to think a win is possible. The key here is our offense has to find a way to keep the ball moving in the first half (even if they don’t score) and not hang the D out to dry. No turnovers, and not giving Bama penalties to move them downfield on key plays (so basically, the only warts we’ve had in games this season). Bama’s lines are super physical, which worries me…but if we make it through the first quarter even and are getting some movement, I like our chances. No championship is a cakewalk, so we’re going to have to earn it…if you want to be the best, you got to beat the best! GO DAWGS!

I do not want it to go like the Superbowl. I went in thinking well, the best coach and QB in the history of Football. As long as the Falcons do not get embarrassed and make a game of it, I will be happy. Then the 28-3 happened. Is Bama going to win, probably. But I feel that the Dawgs have a chance.

Bama has the edge for all the reasons examined ad nauseum across all college football news outlets, namely Saban.

But Georgia can win this game, and convincincingly, if they play with discipline and physicality. Just keep the main thing the main thing. Keep chopping wood regardless of the score board or what just happened or did not happen on the last play.

Oh yeah, and get after their ass.

    Go Dawgs.

I’ll be back later to post “I love everybody!!!!”

I think you just completely summed it up , playing with house money. I have been a fan since I was a kid watching the Junkyard Dawgs, and I think the best thing we have going for us is neither the team nor Kirby is afraid of Bama’ , they don’t need our memories! Whichever way it goes tonight, this has been one bad ass season.

I don’t feel good about this game and had no concerns prior to Oklahoma. I fear that our game plan will be to burn clock and get the game into the 4th quarter… and I feel this plays right into Bama’s hands. I hope we try to light them up early and often… then try to pound them in the 4th quarter.

The key to the game imo is not letting them gash us up the middle. An early lead for us might cause them to throw the ball more… which is good.

I can also say that I am so sick of the hype leading up to this game that it won’t crush me if we don’t play in it next year.

Regardless I think we get it done tonight. Safe travels to all those repping the G. Go Dawgs!!

Agree…that is what we tried against AU in game 1 and it didn’t work. One big advantage over Bama is that we are more dynamic on offense and we need to exploit it. Chaney needs to bring his A game and put Bama on their heels in my opinion. RPOs, runs to the outside with our backs, Wims, Mecole…I want us to be the aggressor. Don’t do anything stupid, but let Fromm do what he does best – make decisions and get the balls in the hands of our playmakers.

Our team is good enough to win this game. We need a break or two plus minimal penalties. Remember: AU beat them. Why not us? We have great senior leadership. I don’t think you will see us waiting until the second half to play ball. Bama is Bama, but they come into this came with a few pieces missing. We can beat them. We just need to believe and then execute. At this point I’m not satisfied with just being here. If not now, when? Go Dawgs!!

It’s been far too long since UGA won a natty and the times since 1981 that we’ve had teams good enough to be #1, we screwed up just enough to fall short. This has been a long, long time coming. The Dawgs have the talent and appear to have the hunger. Let’s win this damn thing.

The only thing that will help me live with a loss in knowing we have arrived and will be playing in many more championship games. It is now ‘WHEN we play again’ not ‘IF we play again’. Senator, I, couldn’t agree more. A win tonight would erase UF in 2002, UF and LSU in 2003, UT in 2004, JTIII in 2005 , the blackout in 2008, and everything since 2010 even the SEC championship in 2012. If they come up short I still feel great about the season and the future.

We all love Chubb, but as mentioned above I just do not understand giving him so many carries when he obviously didn’t have it tonight. Here’s the box score for the tailbacks:

    CAR YDS AVG TD LONG
    Sony Michel 14 98 7.0 0 26
    Nick Chubb 18 25 1.4 0 7
    D’Andre Swift 4 15 3.8 0 7

Sony was having great success, and it wasn’t even close. I understand how you might split carries through the first half, but the difference in winning or losing might have been swapping the number of carries above.

Combine that with the weird schizo playcalling – brilliant one drive, then three runs up the gut on the best run defense in America on the next drive, and I just get pissed. We stopped passing on 1st down. What was the Ramsey thing?

Georgia probably had the better team tonight Except possibly for Fromm being off a bit from his usual game, I think this loss is mostly on the coaches.

One day I’ll watch Georgia not get fucked over by officials in a game against an SEC opponent. Still, it was a good game and a great year. And the future still looks bright for the program.

    The morning after:
Well obviously there is some emotional pain, after coming so close. I wanted it bad for the seniors and the Bulldawg nation…and for my daughter and myself.
But what a year! There is so much to celebrate. If you had laid out the year and told me what might happen before it began, I would have paid good money to ensure it played out.
From the awesome wins in historic venues, like South Bend and the Rose Bowl, to an SEC Championship and a close overtime game against Alabama for all the marbles, not to mention a Kirb-stomp on the Gators in between, and we did it with a freshman QB…yeah, I’ll take it.

To sum it up in a few words…

It’s STILL great to be a Georgia Bulldawg!

Well, I guess it all evened out. We come back from 17 down, and we lose being 13 up. It sure sucks.

Second half play calling was a head scratcher. On our last drive to possibly win the game, neither Sony or Chubb see the field? Bizarre. Fromm throws a helmet pass? And it wasn’t Parrish’s best night. Maybe give him some help?

Anyhoo…great season by the Dawgs. I still say we’re ahead of schedule and expect to be back real soon. I just hope our luck with injuries this year doesn’t swing the other way next year.

For any of you that take the AJC..one of their “features” this morning, something that they saw as fit to print, is an article consisting of GT fans mocking “Georgia’s crushing loss”. Of course I didn’t read it and neither should you, but I have never seen a paper do anything that classless before.

LOL! That’s all they’ve got. We killed them in football and basketball. I guess they win the anime competition.

    • Wow. The funny part is that those GT fans have no idea what tools they look like by doing that. That was 60 + minutes of ass kicking football. Tech couldn’t have hung with either team for a quarter.

Too late. We can’t go back. Bad calls are part of the game.

Watch at full screen. This was the turning point of this game. It’s not going to change the outcome but it might change the way the loss is seen by some. Once again, the refs effected the outcome of a billion dollar game.

    Who does that?
Who pulls their starting championship QB after one half for a freshman who has never played and still wins the game?

    FFS.

Blackledge, Marino and now some hawaiian tupperware kid. Thank God the ND qb couldn’t throw. 1 – 3 in my lifetime now.

That giant running back that Alabama inserted late in the game was a hoss.
    He’s a true freshman?
