The cherry on top of the signing day sundae

Man, what a day Kirby had!  He rakes in what may turn out to be Georgia’s greatest recruiting class of the last three decades, fills out the last two openings on his coaching staff and then receives a terrific gift from Dan Mullen.

Fresh off National Signing Day, coach Dan Mullen made his first public appearance in front of the fans themselves, hosting an hour-long chat with fans, season ticket holders, Alumni Association members and members of Gator Boosters.

It didn’t take him long to draw some loud applause from the fans.

Just one question into the Q&A portion of of the program — OK, the first guy who got the mic to ask a question asked three questions, technically — he was faced with the question on many Florida fans’ minds on Wednesday.

How will Florida keep up with Georgia, which posted a historic No. 1 recruiting class just weeks after playing for the national championship?

“Listen, winning one SEC Championship Game doesn’t make you a dominant program, you know what I’m saying?” Mullen said with a laugh. “In two of the last three years, we’ve been to the SEC Championship Game. So even a blind squirrel finds a nut every once in a while.”

As the fans roared with applause and laughter, Mullen continued on, light-hearted and enjoying himself.

The bye week bulletin boards write themselves this season, don’t they?

Blind squirrels that can throw only quick slants.

Sounds of Spike pinning this on the B-M locker room.

  3. Blind squirrels don’t beat his last 2 employers 73-10.

Mullen, score a TD against our defense then you can talk.

Wow, really. That seemed awfully personal against a notoriously hard worker who owned both yourself and your new team just 5 months ago! There’s throwing down the gauntlet and then there is pissing off the bully on the block needlessly.

      • I would say we aren’t the bully. We’re Teddy Roosevelt … speaking softly and carrying a big stick.

No, I’m not turning this into a political thread.

I’d say UF feels pretty bullied after last October. I liked Kirby’s attitude that we would give them our best shot, not take their best shot!

We signed NINE players rated higher than the highest rated signee on any other SEC East team. That’s a year after almost lapping the SEC East in 4/5 star signees as a whole division!

Our 2018 recruiting points (not that that is the final word on players) lead over number 3 Texas was wider than Texas’ lead over number 17. Quality at the top, quality depth everywhere.

          • The last 60 days have been pretty incredible.

Except for about 10 minutes in Atlanta.

Actually, about one hour of real clock time, or 15 minutes of football clock time when we went into our offensive shell and put the game back in play. That time, however you measure it, seemed excruciatingly longer than a week in a POW camp. Damn, staff, how could you? Just one week after receiving the same gift from Riley in the Rose Bowl?

Blind squirrel? Are we sure he wasn’t referring to Florida?

    • That’s how I interpreted it. Until I saw your comment, it didn’t even cross my mind that he might be referring to us.

    • paul

I think that’s precisely what he meant. Mullen was calling McElwain a blind squirrel.

    • Cojones

I agree with all of you and that was my first thought as well, that he was referring to FU. Don’t forget that we owned Mullen at MSU and owned the FU team with McElwain. It will be nice to get them in a group shot next year.

After the 18 WLOCP, Mullets is going to have to stand before the same hoard and try to explain how a blind squirrel beat his ass.

I guess no one told him Richt doesn’t coach here anymore?

Haha, he said “we’ve been to the SECCG”. Has he ever played a game in Atlanta? And didn’t UF get blown out in both games?

“Even a blind squirrel finds a nut every now and then.”

Unless you’re in Starkville, I guess.

“In two of the last three years, we’ve been to the SEC Championship Game.”

And to paraphrase another SEC coach, “Alabama whipped the dog crap out of them, didn’t they?” I think I would have taken a chance on a blind squirrel in the 2016 SECCG.

I’m wondering if Mullen was calling his own team the blind squirrel. Remember, they just erased the two “SEC East Champions” from their own stadium. Perhaps he’s saying even an incompetent coach can get you to the SEC Championship game. And maybe he’s saying that simply getting there or even winning it occasionally will not be the measure of success with his team. When Dan was at Florida previously, they were dominant on a national level. I think he’s saying that’s his measuring stick.

Thanks Dan! I mean it. We will take all the bulletin board material we can get to counteract that rat poison.

Has a team with Mullen on the staff bear a team with Smart on the staff in the last decade?

  14. Russ

It’s going to feel good to reel off 3-4 straight against these guys.

Even our lousy basketball team beat fu. Talk about short memories.

    Thank you Coach Dan!!!

I see a lot of blind squirrels end up under Georgia tires. Maybe we can put a tread mark on their ass in 2018 that they will never get from under.

  18. Macallanlover

You expect a freshman in front of a microphone for the first time to make that kind of idiotic statement, but a veteran HC earning multiple millions a year? Dumb, dumb, dumb. And stupidly wrong. It isn’t like we were handed the damn thing, or screwed the pooch once we got under the bright lights. I do know some teams that did that, surprisingly Mullen has been involved with both.

  19. South FL Dawg

Walk in my flip flops and that comment would seem mild to you.

That was such a faux pas of bulletin board material, Urban Meyer is going to remember it, and his team will remember it, and it will get handled. I hope Nikes come in a flavor Dan enjoys, he’s liable to be chewing on his own kicks for the next year or so.
