Everybody’s gonna be happy.

Just a reminder I posted this reader poll a year ago.

I wonder how many of the 24 who picked the fourth option really expected it to happen.

Need to add a new choice this year.

That was similar to my thought, Joe. It was such a moonshot that winning the national title wasn’t even an option. Now look at the expectations.

Reading the comments from that poll post was a hoot. I apparently didn’t comment, but I was part of the “win the east, be competitive in the SECC” crowd.

I admit I was an agnostic about Kirby this time last year. I wanted him to succeed, clearly he was an ace recruiter, but I wasn’t sure he could get it done on game day (and I also was far from sure he couldn’t). 2016 had some good wins (UNC, Auburn) and some bad losses (Vandy, Tech), so it was a mixed bag, to me. I am more than happy to admit this year exceeded my expectations, and more than happy to credit the staff with managing the program in a way that showed tremendous improvement. I hoped last year we would see consistency in effort and improvement in play over the course of an entire season, and 2017 was a home run in those departments.

I have no idea what to expect in 2018, but I feel pretty good that winning the East is a fair expectation/goal, and winning the SEC is a possibility. The East is still a dumpster fire, and both UT and UF could be improved over last year and still be very beatable by UGA.

Where is DUP? “It appears Kirby can recruit, but cannot coach. And his offensive staff sux. His DC is unproven. The offense sucks at every level, offensive line loses 3, wr’s lose McK top producer, rb’s were not productive and return, Qb was among the worst nationally and returns. Just don’t see where the points will come from. I agree, hiring Kirby Smart was a terrible move.”

I was bullish on my dawgs last year and even more so this year. By November 2018 we’re gonna be a machine. Hopefully, we can handle those early road tests in Columbia and Baton Rouge

My prediction is 1 vs. 2 on the first Saturday in December. Both teams advance.

Dallas/Miami and then Santa Clara for some sweet redemption. We own Cali!

Now imagine what the poll results would have looked like if you offered a hypothetical, scenario: What if we lose a startng QB for the 1st 4-6 weeks of the season? The actual season results compared to those poll results was in our wildest dreams.

  5. I said win the East and be competitive in Atlanta. I still feel like everything after December 2, 2017 was just gravy.

I still feel the same way entering 2018. Win the East, be competitive against the West winner and let the chips fall where they may. I still remember the drought from 1982-2002. I’m never going to take an SEC championship game appearance for granted.

Was going to correct your “24” because I saw 33, but after checking before typing, it had gone to 37 with a few wiseasses in the weeds.

I would really be interested who those 24 are or just to hear from one or two who projected that unthinkable 4th choice. We needs to know!

  7. Borodawg

I can’t remeber which one I selected; definitely not the last two choices but most likely the second. I didn’t think it was possible to be a UGA fan and have my expectations exceeded and be disappointed (but still amazed the team made it to the natty) with the outcome.

  8. My only comment was: “To paraphrase the great Easy E : ‘ I just want the Dawgs to be legit.’ ” I think I picked #2. So, yes, I am happy.

  9. Kinda mean to share these gems but I cannot resist:

    Mayor – February 13, 2017 at 1:06 PM

I was OK with letting CMR go but I expected an experienced HC of top quality to be hired. B-M choked on the hire IMHO and I fear we will be doing it all over again after 2018 or 2019.

    DUP – February 13, 2017 at 2:12 PM

Really looks that way. It appears Kirby can recruit, but cannot coach. And his offensive staff sux. His DC is unproven. The offense sucks at every level, offensive line loses 3, wr’s lose McK top producer, rb’s were not productive and return, Qb was among the worst nationally and returns. Just don’t see where the points will come from. I agree, hiring Kirby Smart was a terrible move.

    DUP – February 13, 2017 at 1:42 PM

I expect losses to: Notre Dame, Florida & Tenn as usual, GTech and Auburn.
    7-5 so far.
Should win the rest except lose one to either South Carolina, Appalachian State, Vanderbilt or Kentucky.

Ends up at say 6-6, absolutely no way we win the East, can’t beat UF or UT anymore.

Same here. I want to WIN the East with conviction and compete against the West representative like we belong there. If it is Bama I understand they are ahead of Georgia as a program but at least battle, scrap, and test them so the team understands where they need to get to win the SECCG and/or more.”

Expectations met and exceeded, obviously. I still feel Georgia deserved to beat Bama. Breaks didn’t fall right and missed some opportunities with bad execution as well. Georgia is soooo close to reaching the mountain top and Kirby is stacking the resources through recruiting. It is in sight!

Will it be this season? Maybe. But if not, I think the 2019 and 2020 teams are going to be hell for opponents to deal with each Saturday.

    Some more gems from DUP,

    February 13, 2017 at 2:07 PM
True dat. Not one Soph, Jr or Sr made all conference. So you don’t have coaches able to develop anyone, and you have no All SEC type talent returning. It’s not looking good for UGA in 2017 again. DL will be worse, the new DLine coach was a downgrade for sure on his coaching development, upgrade at recruiting, though, but if you can’t develop them so what?

    February 13, 2017 at 1:54 PM
Just too soon to demand excellence.

The offense was terrible bottom 20 nationally only averaged 24 a game, if you do that, the only way to win the East is have a top 10 defense like Florida always does, and our D was around 35, so nope, excellence ain’t realistic this soon. How do folks see a #100 offense improving when it’s the same offensive starters and coaches returning, except less experience on the offensive line?

    February 13, 2017 at 1:57 PM
Yep, 2017 is another throwaway season, no one has a substantial reason to predict an East title for UGA, my guess is Florida will win it with another top 10 defense. 2018, I’m expecting a whole bunch of wins.

  12. AusDawg85

I never believed a HC could throw a season or even a game (Auburn, Part I) as a strategy to fool and defeat opponents, but I’m now a believer. That Kirby…he’s a sly one.

  13. PTC DAWG

A fine showing by DUP…he is MIST.

  14. illini84

But the tickets price “scandal” has ruined 2017, right?

  15. Busta

I was happy with just getting to the SECCG as an early season goal. But the way the team played throughout the regular season however, I tried damned hard not to place more expectations/goals onto them. Obviously way more satisfied with the outcome, bummed we didn’t win it all when we certainly played more than well enough to win. I wasn’t depressed for as long after the NCG because the season was awesome. Now, I’m looking to be in the SECCG and a victory (especially if we play Bama)…if not a victory then a close loss and with a 12-1 record we back door into the CFP…cough…

  16. ApalachDawg

I recommend that your pre season post use the Phil Steele method of predictions and come up with 7,842.5 different scenarios. This will allow you claim your 25 year streak of predicting every individual award, conference and national championship.

  17. Uglydawg

Never never let the world forget that Georgia really won it all, if not for the refs. All you really have to see is a slow mo of the blocked punt we weren’t off sides on.
Having said that…this time last year I was cautiously opti. I was warning everyone that MsSt. could be our early stumble…I was nervous about ND…and had not a clue of what to expect at the barn…It was just amazing the way the whole, beautiful thing unfolded though.

  18. Stoopnagle

I damn near nailed. I said 12-0 with the caveat that I could flip Auburn and/or Notre Dame. I picked the first choice: win the east. Always the first goal because the rest of them flow from that (we’re not Bama).

  19. W Cobb Dawg

I said the division title was ours for the taking Glad we finally did it. And getting back to the secc should be a piece of cake in 2018.

One of the 3 assistants I had concerns about is gone. The other two have improved so much they should be co-winners of my first annual ‘comeback coach of the year’ award.
