If you’re a Georgia fan, the news that Mike Patrick is retiring from broadcasting should bring one moment immediately to mind.
Todd Blackledge’s reaction is classic.

The Georgia Way wants to know if there’s a way UGA can self-vacate that win since Stafford ripped off his helmet.

I remembered that reference to Britney but thought I heard it live. I was at the game so that couldn’t be true. Had no idea until just now that it was right before that pass to Mikey.
I fired up a victory stogie in Bryant Denny that night. That was the third win over Alabama in a row. I miss those days….
I do miss the days of beating bama I’m currently not missing much else about those days.
I mentioned this before, but those ’07-’08 teams, while talented, were in total disarray from a discipline and organization perspective. Stafford/Moreno and their respective crews literally ran wild and pretty much came and went as they pleased. I’ll never forget my good friend, who was on the football staff back then, telling me before the ’08 season that it would be a hugely disappointing season ahead, and he was literally cringing over our #1 preseason ranking.
Wow. I never heard that, but it has to be true. Anymore detail on that ?
No, he just “heard it from a guy.”
Complete horseshit. That’s what that is. From the crowd that always tried to blame the players instead of the head coach. I was a student in those years. I had some players in some of my classes and I saw Matt Stafford every day. The only thing “running wild” was old, fat, contemptible sidewalk fans on message boards making up stories about guys they didn’t know.
Seriously – shame on you.
Kind of odd timing for this given the prison sentence that was just handed down to Henderson…
Well damn! I wish I didnt read that.
Many people didn’t realize that Mike Patrick was joking around regarding the Brittany reference, as it was supposed to be tongue-in-cheek humor. Sure, the joke fell flat, but it was made worse by Blackledge totally being blown off guard and basically, like, ‘wtf dude.’
Yeah, Blackledge hung him out to dry. Patrick was not good but unless that guy was a real jerk, no need to do that.
Can’t really blame Todd though, as the timing/delivery just wasn’t there. Plus he was so caught up in the OT thriller that again it just went over his head. In the moment, Todd probably did think he was being serious.
Yep, it was just a poor attempt at a joke.
And Stafford to Mikey Henderson – great memory!
Mike Patrick was ahead of his time but nobody knew it. He was a trendsetter, talking about everything but the game at hand. They didn’t have the playoff then to speculate on which 4 teams would get in like they do all game long now.
26-23 over Bama in OT. I’m going to savor that for a minute.
Did anyone else think about this OT from the ’07 game during NC game? Bama basically ran this play twice … ugh.
The fact that the national title loss is a near exact mirror image of this is pretty eerie and makes me extra sad.
Just totally bizarre.
Refs really let ‘Bama down.
I was there! Watched it with a navy buddy who’s a Bama fan. Same guy I went to the 2012 SEC CG, 2015 rain game, and the Natty with. I told him we need to bring his wife along next time, as she was present the first time and that worked out for us.
As a man that has told many, many, many jokes that went over like a lead zeppelin, I felt pretty bad for Patrick there.
Eerie that the final score in this game was 26-23 good guys
I’ve always liked Patrick. I thought he called good college and pro games. So he failed on an attempt at humor…lighten up Francis’s….
I notice that the retiring announcers had voices that you could pick out in a crowd. The new play by play guys are pure vanilla and hard to tell the difference. I guy Joe T from ESPN has a distinctive voice but it’s irritating.
