They can go on for miles with this.
Quarterback questions for Alabama and Georgia
This could be a first for college football: Two young quarterbacks who started the national championship game will have to scramble to keep their jobs. At Alabama, most have already awarded the QB1 title to Tua Tagovailoa, the hero of the Tide’s most recent national title. Although Jalen Hurts is a two-year starter who doesn’t commit turnovers and can gash defenses, he will need a strong spring to hold off Tagovailoa, a more gifted passer who could help Alabama’s talented young receivers. Jake Fromm ranked ninth nationally in pass efficiency as a redshirt freshman as Georgia won the SEC in 2017, but he’ll be pushed by Justin Fields, the nation’s top recruit and one of the most decorated quarterback prospects in recent years. Fields enrolled in January and will have every opportunity to wow the coaches this spring.
The talking-points script for their G-Day announcing team writes itself, doesn’t it? I can already hear Herbie offering his insight.
I hope the espn hot taek people fix the redshirt classification they think Fromm belongs to. Accurately titling him as a true freshman has a bit more punch to it. What an amazing kid though, I love reading stuff like this and shaking my head as I imagine what I was doing as an 18 year old freshman.

That jumped out at me, and actually kind of pissed me off.

I thought Fromm was a true freshman last year.

He was … Apparently ESPN just doesn’t want to believe it.

I guess the writers and talking heads have to have something to do in the offseason to generate clicks and attract viewers.

It’s like apples and oranges, or apples and less ripe apples. Tua may well win the job, but he’s also been there for a year and demonstrated his ability to play at a high level. Georgia’s in roughly the same situation Alabama was at the beginning of last season, so it seems highly unlikely Fromm is in danger of losing his job barring injury.

I guess Saban would complain if ESPN isolated Alabama as the team with a qb controversy. So just make another one up and there ya go, fair and balanced…
This isn’t an issue of off season click bait. This is an issue of “journalistic integrity,” which doesn’t exist in sports. Alabama pulled their 23-1 starter at half and won a natty with a pretty solid performance from their freshman. Our back up played half a year at Harrison High School in 2017. Our starter had the best true freshman season at QB in college football history.
Trying to connect these two situations is laughably stupid.

I love our QB situation. We have an established starter coming off an outstanding season, and the team sees that QB as one of the team’s leaders. He has won big games on the road and in neutral sites and was the best QB on the field in the biggest game of the season. We have recruited a QB who has a lot of skill and athletic ability but has not really played against big time competition (especially since he got hurt). Cobb County doesn’t have the same HS football pedigree as a lot of other places around the state have. He enrolled early to jump into the competition when he could have stayed home, played baseball, and possibly signed a big minor league deal.
What’s not to like? Fromm is going to be the starter, but Fields is going to play. G-Day is going to be fun, but not fun enough for me to brave the crowd and the parking situation for a glorified scrimmage.

Unless proven wrong on the field of play, I will continue to assume there is absolutely no QB controversy at UGA right now. ESPN just needs clicks in a boring off season. Fields may have more raw talent but Jake’s no slouch and he proved he can make plays and more importantly (in Kirby’s eyes), make consistently good decisions even in the bright lights. Fields is going to play because he’s the only other scholarship QB on the roster and we play 3 cupcakes this year, but Fromm is the starter without a doubt.

ESPN?…seems like I remember them. They used to be a respectable sports news network, if memory serves me correctly.

Its best to avoid them. I have since 12/2/07.

Need to compare tape between Jake and Justin from their each respective QB1 documentaries. Then we can compare their GDAY QBR. That should be enough to anoint the starting spot end of story 😉
