That says he sucks as an AD. He keeps his job by fulfilling the main goal he’s charged with, turning a profit.

One could make a very strong argument Greg Mediocrity isn’t even good at turning a profit. Anybody can carry the check from espn to the bank. Being cheap for the sake of saving a few nickels isn’t maximizing profit potential. Look at any aspect of McG’s history – noon starts, watered down opponents, pennypinching on assitant salaries, even retaining Fox this long, etc. – these actions don’t improve profit. Problem is, other schools are making moves while McG is lazily enjoying his time as a do-little caretaker.

You are right, GM is an average cost manager at best with zero leadership skills. As long as the checks keep coming at the current pace he will keep his job.

Do not feel good about the round ball hire with McGarity running show. Just to many variables involved for GM to decipher, always a chance for blind luck. Believe the right hire could put Dawgs in the picture to keep some of top talent home without getting in trouble with a Harrick or Pearl type.

Context with how other AD’s fared over the same type of time periods and hires would be nice and add needed clarity…but we are talking about the AJC here..GMac may suck, may be average…or may be good…

As noted, and as I mentioned yesterday, you can’t get ADGM credit for the Smart hire, as he wanted Mullen but was quickly slapped down and told that he absolutely would be hiring Smart; no ifs, ands or buts.

So only the bad hires does he get credit for…got it. Lots of folks who think they are on the inside here…flies on the wall for sure. The Senator probably has as good a contacts as anyone…

That to me, means the best possible outcome for us with basketball is to promote Jonas. I have zero confidence in his ability to make a good hire on his own. If Jonas does not work out, we will have to cross that bridge when it comes up, but it is the least disruptive, he by all accounts recruits well, knows the players he has, and the basketball scene in the ATL.

That’s a laughably dumb suggestion. You’d rather keep having mediocre basketball just because you don’t want ADGM to make a good hire.
Thad Matta has been offered the job. If he accepts, GM will have done a much better job than you’ll give him credit for, and we’ll all be thankful he didn’t just promote Jonas.

I’d like to be wrong about it, but I can’t believe that Thad really is the answer: He was fired by tOSU for the inability to perform the core functions of his position. He alleges he has a back injury that may or may not be related to his job (possibly Workers’ Comp).He claims he had dropsy in one foot that prevented him coaching to full capacity. Many patients with severely painful back injuries develop ‘other’ problems. Whatever, if those issues aren’t addressed hoping that Ron Courson can lay hands’ on him and fix him, it’s a desperate, ill thought out hire at best.
If we get Thad, I predict ADGM will have made another ‘name’ hire that just sets back the program in the long run. Granted, he did well at tOSU for a while, but not so well that they were willing to keep him. I think we are better off with a young guy that knows the program, knows the recruiting area, and has a little fire in his belly. Laugh all you want.

Matta took over as head coach of Butler when Barry Collier left after the 1999–2000 season to coach at the University of Nebraska. Matta was named 2000–01 Midwestern Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year in his first and only season as head coach at Butler, after leading the Bulldogs to a school record 24 wins. He was also named National “Rookie Coach of the Year” by CBS SportsLine.com and College Insider.com.
At Xavier, Matta led the Musketeers to three consecutive 26-win seasons, back-to-back Atlantic 10 Conference regular-season championships in 2002[2] and 2003[3] and two league tournament titles in 2002 and 2004.[4] Xavier advanced to three NCAA tournaments, including an Elite Eight appearance in 2004 following two second-round trips.

For those who don’t remember : WALHALLA, S.C.— After coming tantalizingly close to pulling the biggest upset in the history of the N.C.A.A. men’s basketball tournament, the homespun head coach and his hot-shot assistant locked in a long embrace.
Phil Hopkins, an emotional man, had coached 16th-seeded Western Carolina to the verge of an upset of No. 1-seeded Purdue. No team seeded 16th has ever upset a No. 1 seed. Few have come close. Western Carolina had one shot to win and another to tie; both attempts hit the back of the rim in the final seconds. Hopkins wept at the news conference, telling reporters, “We deserved to win.”
His top assistant in that game was Thad Matta, in his first full-time coaching job.
“The cruelest twist might have come after Hopkins ended the three-year downturn and went 14-14. He had talented freshman twins on the roster, one of whom was the league’s player of the year and rookie of the year.
But a new athletic director, Jeff Compher, arrived from Vanderbilt and decided not to offer Hopkins a new contract after his fifth season at the university. The twins transferred to Georgia, with Jarvis Hayes developing into an N.B.A. lottery pick and Jonas Hayes becoming a solid starter in the Southeastern Conference.”

I’ve never been his biggest cheerleader, but feel the need to play Devil’s Advocate here. Article rings a little bit of, “But other than that Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?”
Sure, maybe hiring Kirby was a slam dunk, but firing Richt sure as hell wasn’t. I thought it was the wrong call at the time, destined for a decade of post-Fulmerdom, but I’ve never been happier to be wrong (thus far at least). I’ve never seen any reporting to suggest that was anyone’s call but ADGM, but post away if I’ve missed.
Track and Field and tennis titles are great, but I’d trade 5 years of winless seasons in those sports for that Rose Bowl win.
