Hmm. I know that that real revenues & bottom lines are murky, but my perception is that most schools, especially those outside the power conferences (and yes, they’re part of D1 too) don’t really make enough to pay very much to the players. And there are Title IX issues regarding equality of opportunity, that’s a real thing, isn’t it? This is why I’m in favor of revenue sharing from marketing sales or personal endorsements rather than salaries.
I know that Emmert’s gone all-in on the status quo and he’ll never look at this seriously, but I’m not quite sure that the reasons he lists are totally off-base–they’re just not the whole picture: what is off-base is the thinking that a salary is the only way to go.

Why do schools need to pay the athletes? That’s not the only alternative. Let the athletes profit off their name and likeness like the Olympics do and the school won’t have to worry about paying anyone. The market can decide how much Katie Ledecky or Brendan Douglas is worth compared to Todd Gurley.

God forbid you have to go without a video game that was unfairly profiting off of someone who wasn’t getting a nickel from the sale. Instead of focusing on why they don’t make it anymore (the NCAA’s draconian rules) let’s blame it on the people trying to bring justice to the system. Because Brandon can’t abide that Madden game where the AI controlled players sometimes randomly kneel and hold up Che Guerrera banners.

Why should a casual fan care if players are paid?
From a fans perspective, this can only mean an increase in ticket prices, SEC Network subscription rates and increased costs for licensed products and apparel to offset the increased cost of paying atheletes.

If it does and you don’t like it, don’t pay it. If enough people feel the way you do, the market will correct itself, and the first thing to go will be the bloated salaries, staff and facilities.
I imagine there are 85 guys who would gladly trade their $10,000 locker for a $10,000 per year stipend at the University of Texas . Just like at Clemson there are 85 guys who would gladly trade their adult playground with a Putt-Putt course for the same amount in their pocket.

Hopefully there will soon be a DFL to give those that wish to play football for money that option.
I noticed the G-League landed it’s first top 10 basketball prospect recently and will pay him $36,000 to play minor league basketball. This is a fantastic option for kids that don’t really want to go to college.

If the NCAA would just relent on the trading on name and likeness, this whole thing would go away. For some reason, Emmert and his bosses within the university presidents have decided to not allow student-athlete to have the same right every other student has on campus … the ability to earn money outside of their academic studies.

The NCAA is between a rock and a hard place, huh. What kills (and amuses) me about this is that the answer IS right at the end of their nose and IMO they refuse to see it. OR they refuse to let on that they see it, and that makes them not dumb, but stupid.

I think my very first inspiration to comment on something here was “there’s way too much money flowing around for CFB to remain as it is, it’s going to get ugly fast”.
The tv network thing is just too much. All this paying the players is fine with me but none of it existed when ESPN wasn’t creating the monster. I truly love the ability to watch every game on television but I knew it was a bad thing when this explosion happened.
Pay the kids, quit over compensating football staff, and sit down and shut up.

Same way I believe all sports should be. The MLB guys should get a specific amount of money for each game they win. Pitchers should get a specific amount for a strikeout, every play should be scored and awarded. We have these computers nowadays that can itemize everything quickly and efficiently.
Roquan could have been paid $500 for every tackle. Did was/is a montster player, tackling last season was ridiculously satisfying.
