Could someone explain why this is divided along political lines, like ‘Publicans needing firearms to fend off what? Is that the only party that’s paranoid that someone is coming after them? If so, why?

Since you carry, would you help me with this one, Mac?

Its a good wedge issue for R’s. There are plenty of D’s that are firm believers in the 2nd amendment and some (a very vocal group) in the D party want to make all guns illegal and overturn the 2nd amendment.

Not saying my opinions just answering your first question.

Haven’t heard a single voice from fellow Democrats as to ridding society of guns. The continued availability of automatic weapons to nutjobs should embarrass us all into action as a responsible society and it should be a top priority of us all, regardless of political leaning.

Continuation of mass shootings is beginning to give pause to many people to consider repealing the language of the 2nd Amendment such that idiots can’t hide behind it’s meaning to scare that part of society that has no proficiency with guns into thinking that they are safer if they own one. That’s the message that the NRA has politicized into a national crisis and that sells guns like hotcakes.

Exactly. Right wing fear mongering often includes the allegations that liberals are trying to get rid of all guns and the 2nd amendment. I can find right wingers who want to expel all non-whites, that doesn’t make it a significant number of people. By far, the majority of moderates and liberals want gun reform, not to take away all guns or repeal the 2nd amendment. Mainly because repealing the 2nd amendment is not necessary to implement better gun control, SCOTUS has already ruled that the 2A is not unlimited in it’s scope.

I like how you said in the first paragraph no D’s want to get rid of guns and in the second paragraph you say they are considering repealing 2nd amendment. A quick google search brings up the following article with attached survey:

          https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/survey-majority-of-democrats-want-to-ban-semi-automatics-half-want-to-ban-all-guns

I know the source and possibly the survey is ‘rigged’ but I could show a hundred other articles, polls, or prominent D’s stating they want to get rid of guns. If you haven’t heard D’s say this then you have your head in the sand or you are being intentionally deceptive (more likely).

Like I said in another post, you have an axe to grind but you are picking on the wrong person. I haven’t put my view of guns out here and I am less pro gun than most people who vote like me.

I was not being disingenuous, but suspicion that you may be with your reference and saying the survey was possibly “rigged”. Please read my words closely and you will see that I said that I have not heard (personally) any Democrat make such a statement. Yes, I’m quite aware of people on the national stage who make up a small part of voting Ds that have made other strong and wishful(on their part) statements that I mostly condemn as wishful thinking that is being taken seriously by some. They are a smaller part of voting Ds who had a small part in defeating Hillary as well.

I never identified a group as having discourse about changing the 2A and you are the one who is inferring that I meant Ds. Please reread my first and second paragraphs closely, don’t parse my words and for Pete’s sake, quite rewriting other’s words to your troubled thought process and I, in return, will not assume that most people in SC are buffoons..

Hi Cojo. I’m a concealed carry permit holder and lifetime member of the NRA. I have no problem with this decision because there is armed security present in the stadium.

Certainly hope you are in law enforcement. I grew up with guns, fired multiple calibers by the time I was 12, carried a sidearm as a teenager (for snakes and gators while fishing), but had a large area to roam and shoot safely. I was a member of NRA in the 50s (equivalent of joining the Red Ryder BB Gun Club then) because it was required of members of the Rifle Team that I was a member of and captained. Grew up hunting quail and dove using differing gauges of shotguns while settling on a pump 410 that I have continued to own and use for over 60 yrs. As President of a Rod and Gun Club while in the military, had a low/high clay pigeon house shotgun course constructed with 8 stations for members.

In other words, guns have always been a part of my life, but arming myself to walk among people would be as arrogant an act toward my fellow citizens as can be imagined. Using the deaths of HS kids by troubled white guys using automatic weapons as a reason to carry and ostensibly protect myself and others is ludicrous. I certainly believe that law enforcement should carry in any manner they please to help protect others, but think that act should be buttressed by selecting people who are psychologically suited and trained to do so.

The idea that automatic weapons are needed among members of our society is abhorrent to anything I was ever taught and should only be available to trained military and a select few of law enforcers (Swat Teams, etc). The same goes for carrying a loaded pistol. It is a gross practice of mostly paranoid minds who have been indoctrinated into such behavior by political propaganda mixed liberally with religion. Bastardization of the meaning of the Second Amendment to suit devious purposes of political machines has no place in any of our lives. Adults who can think can certainly master their way in this society without reverting to shooting their fellow citizens and they still can own guns for hunting, recreational shooting and protection of their family and home.

Here’s the truly disturbing part – the folks who insist they need assault rifles to defend themselves against tyranny are not talking about a hostile government. These people are also the adamantly pro-police crowd who “back the blue” even when the blue is clearly in the wrong. Law enforcement is literally the front line of government. But you see the NRA propaganda vids – they are stirring up resentment and fear of, not the government or law enforcement, but rather citizens. Americans who don’t align politically with the far right. The enemy that the NRA is referring to are people like you and me, our friends and neighbors. So this idea of a revolution carried out by jim bob, billy bob and cooter – it’s essentially a hypothetical ideological genocide. Republicans murdering everyone that’s not a Republican and who could threaten their ideals through the democratic process.

That’s not what the 2nd Amendment was for.

It’s a souped up squirrel gun that looks like a machine gun. It’s .003 larger of a barrel than a .22 with more powder in the shell. It’s a fad for both sides. Nobody is arguing over a .223 varmint rifle because they don’t look the same even though from chamber to barrel they’re the same. Lot of ignorance on the subject on both sides in the media.

You, anyone you vote into power, or any other entity you put your “trust and faith in” , try to come and take them, and find out really quickly what they are best for. Any of my other rights you want to arbitrarily take away, while you’re at it? By the way, quit saying you “grew up around guns”, while also being purposefully misleading about them, referring to them as “automatic”. You know nothing but someone else’s agenda to spew.

It goes back to Revolutionary War times when republicans took up arms at Lexington and Concord while dems partied with British elite in Philly and NYC.

      Like

      • Cojones

Didn’t all those “dems” become republicans later? That’s not a serious statement because people back then didn’t worry about political parties when it came to a collective cause of creating our country. Whigs and Tories maybe.

In our family history, we can’t divide neatly into political parties for any war. When one brings out the genealogy, we can’t be certain how many were true leaders of worth and how many horse thieves may be tucked in there, but one of my ancestry did fight in the Battle of Concord. He received a Revolutionary War pension at the age of 80 that put his age at 60s or thereabout when he fought. There are two letters from commanders attesting to his presence in the battle and were needed for him to have eligibility for a pension.

But none of those things amount to snot in modern times that have changed considerably since those days. If we want to get right down to it, I think that all Americans have the right to own a musket loading gun in their possession as was the intent of the 2nd Amendment. If automatic weapons existed at the time of our Constitution, I believe firmly that we would never have written that amendment.

I’ve been. A few hundred ranchers, farmers and their families cheering for the hometown boy on a horse is somewhat different than 100,000 yelling, drinking fans at an SEC football venue. Maybe you’d feel safer if the screaming idiot behind you had a Glock on his hip. I wouldn’t, and I don’t think that makes me a commie.

    • The last thing I need is an armed Bama fan or Auburn fan in the stands at the occasional game of theirs I attend. And drunk to boot. No way.
Have attended a lot of rodeos and they do not come close to the insanity at Tuscaloosa or Auburn.

It’s illegal to drink and carry with pretty severe penalties. Most open carry people are extremely law abiding in my experience.

With that said, there is no reason for guns at a game. It isn’t one of those “safe”/open target areas. The entire state law enforcement team is at every corner. Stadiums are the safest place in the state on game days.

Agree with you about open carry people being the most law abiding people you will ever meet. Also agree about no guns at football games, that would be nuts. If you are ever near Cody, check out the rodeo. It’s pretty amazing. Guns everywhere, the nicest folks you will ever meet. It will make you embarrassed about the way some CFB fans act.

I worked in Yellowstone for a summer and have been to the Cody Night Rodeo a few times. I had a blast. The ride through Lamar valley and over the beartooth pass and down to Cody was one of my best experiences.

Every single buddy I have that has a concealed-carry permit drinks while armed and brings their weapon along wherever they go (bars, clubs, etc), without exception. Most are ex-military; all are otherwise law-abiding (for the most part), but they do not obey the concealed-carry laws.

Sides, local rules in some counties out West refute that first sentence. Open carry of guns and open containers are permitted, but you can’t lift a container to your mouth in front of law enforcement. Their local laws are to permit folks to roam about in the open country and, if stopped for other reasons, they won’t be prosecuted if an open container is present.

I agree that most open carry people I have known were also law abiders, but that was under differing conditions other than crowded stadiums and schoolyards. These statements of local customs have no equivalency to open carry in crowds or schools.

I obviously don’t know the local laws all over the country. I see you have an axe to grind on this issue but I agreed that they should not be allowed in stadiums. Stadiums are well protected by law enforcement. Schools are a different matter in my experience. I saw my first handgun (in schools) on the bus in 6th grade. In high school it was known multiple people carried guns. Some were just to protect themselves on the walk to/from school, some were just brought to show friends, and others were for more nefarious purposes. People who don’t think guns are in schools now are extremely naïve (bordering on ignorant). I think people would be shocked on how many handguns are in schools on a daily basis. Its amazing there aren’t more school shootings.

Every single comment falls into one of five categories:, anecdotes, opinions, facts (data, evidence), fantasy or common sense. It’s easy to simply ‘ear/read screen’ and ignore. The real reason information needs high-grade shock absorbers these days is that it has all been politicized. For a reason.

The fact is, we beat the shit out of Auburn in the SECCG. Not fantasy. Not politicized. Perfect violin pitch. That is enough sunshine for my tomato plant for a year. Especially since YouTube + streaming exists.
