Know what makes me smile these days?

Discussion of Georgia’s offensive line situation, that’s what.

For the first few weeks of spring practice, the front five looked almost exactly as it did to end the 2017 season. Andrew Thomas has made the move from starting right tackle to first-team left tackle. Kendall Baker was at left guard, Lamont Gaillard at center, Ben Cleveland at right guard and redshirt freshman Isaiah Wilson at right tackle.

Of that group, only Wilson didn’t end the 2017 season as a starter. But over the past week, Baker has spent more time as the second-team left tackle with Solomon Kindley, who started seven games at right guard a season ago, moving over to play left guard.

According to Smart that shakeup has more to do with the Bulldogs trying to create some depth at tackle than it does any jobs or responsibilities changing hands on the interior.

“The move there that everybody is trying to make a big deal about, we’re trying to get another tackle ready,” Smart said. “So we’re taking Kendall Baker, allowing him to work at a secondary position, no different than a corner having to play safety or a safety play Star or a tackle play guard. Kendall Baker, we’re trying to see if he’s our best left tackle, is he our second-best left tackle, is he our best right tackle, is he our second-best right tackle.”

In times past, shuffles like that were born more of desperation to find a warm body who could occupy a slot out of necessity.  I’m not sure I can quite wrap my brain around the concept of building depth by design, but I sure as hell like reading about it.

Heady times. I was thinking how Richt’s second team was very similar to last year, and then I thought “except for the recruiting”. That is what should allow Kirby to continue the success we had last season.

Portends good times for the next 2-3 years, at a minimum.

Moving Wynn from guard to tackle was a stroke of genius. Maybe lightning can strike twice with Baker.

If Baker can actually challenge Thomas for left tackle then good for him. Don’t you think he is probably practicing there as insurance. Agree with the Senator that it really is different to have no worries on offensive line… we would love to redshirt four offense lineman this year and we probably will shirt at least two. And we are actually in it for several five stars in 2018. Unbelievable.

Let’s see; leg up on O side and leg down on D side and that would make for one helluva scoring O in every game until the D gets it’s sea legs.

It’ll be “Sic’em Dawgs! ” for the O and “Hold’em Dawgs! ” for the D until there’s some equity, then it will be “Clean Their Plow! ” for the remainder of the scheduled season. Out-scoring’em will be the name of the game this season.

Seeing the earlier blurb on Holyfield just sends me for another drink of Kool Aide Margarita..

Last sentence, 2nd para; Duh and shades of “Mr College Football”, Barnhart. Ratcheting up the scoring from last year is the meaning.

Depth breeds competition, & development not to mention he’s getting things in order for the summer crew. Hope Sam Madden stays here forever. Icing on the cake is that this kind of stout O-line should also make the Dline seriously battle tested by 1st game.

  7. Hey Senator, I had figured you were in Augusta watching our locally developed talent win it all. Whoop, whoop. I did not expect a post from you today anyway…

Times have changed. I have NEVER seen the type of depth we now have…hey lets experiment with our OL to build depth. NOW if we could do the same with the DL.
