“They didn’t invite you. Trump invites you.”

(Ricky Carioti/The Washington Post)

You may have heard that the Alabama football team was honored yesterday for winning the national championship.  It was a meeting of two men at the peak of their respective powers.

To no one’s surprise, one of those men spoke movingly about his role in the event…

“It was truly a win for the ages,” Trump said. “I don’t know if you know, but I was there.”

… and one man worked while he was there.

All in all, just another day at the White House.

He also left at halftime after making gate entry a total disaster.

Honestly, any President would have had the same effect. For the record, getting in was 800% quicker than getting out, unless you timed a late entry. Given the notice of the President attending, that was self inflicted, imo. I, on the other hand, had no warning about the lack of exit doors (or doors period) in that fire trap. I understand the outcry led to some immediate changes, but I swore no one in my family would never attend another event at MB because of the dangerous set up. A tech engineer had to be involved in the design to squeeze people out one minute at a time.

My only experience at MBS was the same. I went there for a concert and we entered at the gate closest to the Vine St station, right on the corner. When we left, or tried to leave, we couldn’t get back to that gate because it was downstairs and all access downstairs was denied. We ended up walking around the stadium, along with thousands of others, looking for a way out.

Have to disagree there on the hyperbolic “getting in was 800% quicker than getting out.” I arrived at 5:30, 2.5 hours before the festivities were set to begin, and it still took an hour and a half of standing in ~40 degree rain to get inside because one quarter of the gates were completely closed (though true, gates don’t have a party or personality preference). Getting out was slow and an issue, but not that bad.

Chose the wrong gate? Maybe. Self-inflicted? That’s silly. And I’ll wager the people standing everywhere around me who were grousing about it would agree. It have been less disastrous getting in if “any President” would have skipped the event.

I have to disagree with you there. Getting in was far more painful for me than getting out of that joint. My buddy and I walked to the next closest Marta stop though, didn’t try getting on the one right at the stadium after the game, so that might have made some difference. Standing in line to get in the gate for over an hour while barely moving was horrible. I hope that’s not the norm for that stadium during NFL games.

I was in the rain for about 20-30 minutes to get in, I was almost an hour getting from my seat to the fresh air after the game. Then the MARTA troubles began. Others may have had other issues, but the horror stories I heard about getting in were from later arrivals. The problem getting out was shared by all. And I got up top leave before the scoreboard had time to change to the final score but couldn’t even get to the mezzanine level until the upper and middle levels had backed up substantially. I didn’t want to any part of that celebration, or awards ceremony. Then we shuffled our feet at a rate of about two minutes for every yard all the way to the other end of the stadium…the only exit gate. As I said, I heard they made immediate apologies and added doors to leave the stadium since.

Boy oh boy, Saban never, never misses an opportunity for a little leverage. Calling recruits and casually mentioning he’s in the White House. I like it.

I’m gonna go out on a limb and say he probably called a Cade Mays and/or Ben Cleveland type as a call from the White House may not be such a great recruiting pitch for many teenaged recruits.

Yeah, I don’t think anyone missed that absurd parade he orchestrated for himself before the game. I’m just surprised he didn’t didn’t try to claim credit for it being “the most watched sporting event in the history of mankind, ever.”

Have never seen Saban near a podium that didn’t have a Coke bottle on it before. Guess he doesn’t control everything. Should have been Kirby and UGA attending that event, you get so few chances to win that title game, still hurts that we squandered it, damn.

Can’t wait for the Dawgs to get to visit President Pence next year, though.

Sounds like a good idea, but I’m assuming most of the recruits were black. Might not be a good idea after all.

Yes, Mr. President, we know you were there. We all had to stand in the freezing rain for an hour to get into the stadium because you were there.

If it weren’t for dumb officials and dumber voters neither saban nor trump would be at the white house. Sorry, I’m still despondent over both outcomes. Here’s hoping Kirby replaces one of em next year. And I won’t be surprised if the other guy is gone too.

  14. shouldn’t this post actually be classified under,” always be recruiting” as opposed to political wankery. When was the last time a national champion team didn’t go to the White House? Also I don’t think that your average 17/18 yoa football players, black ,white or Samoan are such MSNBC watchers that a call from the White House would cause them to hang up. A Saban comment that ,”you too can increase your chances of visiting the White House if you commit to the Tide” sounds like good recruiting to me. Additionally, the lowest black unemployment rate in the history of the labor Dept keeping that statistic might actually create some fans of this White House. YMMV

Always amuses me when the people who flat out denied the economic recovery that took place under Obama, decrying the statistics as “fake,” suddenly use those same statistics to say Trump made everything better. Which is it? If the statistics are real, then Trump inherited an economy that recovered on Obama’s watch. If you say they’re fake then you can’t very well now say the unemployment numbers are at an all-time low.

Trump is a wonderfully effective tool for getting people to trade their crosses for swastikas and not even recognize they are doing it.

What’s a little economic hypocrisy against that backdrop?

Godwin’s law for the win. Aren’t we all better off in a world where Christian bakers are forced to trade against their will and nuns are forced to buy birth control benefits? What’s the definition of fascism again?

The statistics are calculated using the same methods for Obama and Trump. It is fair to compare them but it doesn’t mean the statistics accurately represent the state of the economy/employment. It amuses me how little Obama economy truthers understand the economy…

One theory: they’re full of shit

I’m old enough to remember the Reagan economy of 1996 and the Carter economy of 1982.

If its good they want credit and if its bad its some libtards fault, or a group of poor people, especially brown poor people. They’re the worst kind.

Right. Leftists are too honest for that kind of crap. That’s why you never heard people claiming the 2010 economy was Bush’s fault. Right? Right?

I hope you’re wrong. I do NOT want Kirby to become President……..would take up too much time away from recruiting.
