As the Urnge turns

Jeez, looky here.

I don’t think this means Fulmer’s getting another promotion, but this is Tennessee we’re talking about here, so…

Will they move directly to hire the Assistant Chancellor from Alabama, or screw around for a while and flirt with the Assistant Chancellor from Ohio State and whoever Gruden thinks might be a good Chancellor?

I still think Fulmer is the most competent person at that school…

Competent at what? Manipulation and subterfuge? The two most competent people at UT are probably the two they most recently fired.

How many article has the Senator posted of ADs being less than competent, Fulmer may turn out to be a decent AD. You can take that just about however you want.

Politics is a lucrative profession, if you succeed there are many rewards, if you fail you can always write a book

Allegedly Reagan (which I’m not verifying)

AD is a highly political position

I wouldn’t expect you to understand competence. This is a sample of the stupidity at UT:

I’m not sure what you’re reading here that makes you think any of this makes Fulmer competent.

I don’t believe anyone said Fulmer was competent more that the past regime is as deserving of a book along the lines of Behind the Hedges

And I didn’t say they were competent, I’m just saying I find it highly unlikely that the most competent person involved in that circus is the one who put torpedoes in the water to blow up the administration of a state University so he could jockey himself into a football job.

UT friends say that Fulmer wasn’t leading the torpedoes but was the natural figurehead familiar enough with Tennessee to get into the job. Currie’s handling of the job search shows the amazing amounts of incompetence of the academic bureaucrats running UTK.

I think it was sarcastic hyperbole.

“Competence” and “UT AD” (or administration) are rarely paired together. Whether or not Fulmer is competent is still TBD, but it’s a pretty low bar when you’re compared to guys like Currie and Hamilton. Even our own beloved AD would look like a genius up there.

A year and two months into her job. I wonder what could have been her undoing? Heh. The mob now knows that they rule at UTk and can twitter storm the castle whenever they get irritated by administration decisions. I hope the next Chancellor understands that he/she better beat Alabama, Georgia and UF. Why bother with that pesky academic side? You’ve got a game coming up in 4 months.

How was hiring Currie controversial? He’d been successful at Kansas State. Did he become controversial when he couldn’t properly execute a coaching search?

He was controversial in that he isn’t Fulmer, who also wanted the job.

Currie had gotten a degree at UT and also worked in their AD office under Hamilton so it’s not like he was a stranger to the program

He did fumble the hiring of replacement so I look at his firing as a legit response to performance.

Many UT fans blame a connected line of Chancellors and ADs for recent problems on field and decline of multiple sports. Many Vol fans would see this the same way as many UGA alums cleaning house of Adams legacy. It isn’t shocking to see the firing. Will UT improve? We’ll have to wait and see.

Lulu and Junior on Volnation think this is the Haslem’s (UT megadonors) payback to Davenport for hiring Fulmer.

Rumor is she took the last Donut and Fulmer had her fired. Don’t screw with the Giant Pumpkin.

Jeebus. How much of a headcase/idiot do you have to be to post your “firing” letter on the internet? No reason to check references, pretty sure it’s all right there.

  11. As in a lot of these things, we never will know all the details. Just shows that politics is rampant in the higher education business. Where I graduated from, just fired their president after less than a year in the job. Piss off the wrong people and say bye bye

Said before, Davenport was a total flake and as over her head as McDoofus is at UGA. Difference was she was in a position to do more harm as president. My TN friends began this drumbeat last fall when Bootch was exposed and Currie was dragging his feet. Her hiring of him, failure to intervene as things simmered, and allowing the public fiasco with the hiring process put her squarely in the crosshairs. Her final gift to us may be appointing Foolmer and his picking Pruitt to be the HC. My bet is this drama is for from over.

The problems at UT are more structural than anything else. The UTK Chancellor (equivalent to our President) is in the same building on a lower floor as the UT system president. UTK (the bell cow of the system) chafes at being lorded over by the system staff that is in the same town and building. System is ostensibly concerned with the working of the entire state but somehow inserts itself into UTK operations all the time.

This lady may have been inadequate, but the termination letter indicates a micromanager looking over her shoulder and inventing minute reasons to can her over what is really a football disaster. A strange position for the President of a University the size of UT.
