Filed away for future reference

Never interrupt a man in the middle of his golf game.

So much for putting that game behind him.

In the (red) zone

Remember when the red zone was a place of danger for Georgia?  Good times, right?

Well, that was then and this is last season.

That’ll win you a few games.

SEC expansion is off the table for a little longer.

You want proof?  Okay, here goes.

When you’ve still got the biggest Johnson, revenue-wise, no need to blow things up to get a new TV deal.

Jeffrey Kessler ain’t played ‘Bama, PAWWWLLL.

But he’s about to.

Shit’s getting closer to being real in the Alston/Jenkins trial, so the NCAA’s lawyers are in the throw stuff against the wall to see what sticks phase of the legal proceedings.

A trial day delayed is another day of not having to share.

Anything but Judge Wilken.

Delay, delay, delay…

Today’s lesson in successful marketing

When we look back a couple of decades now and wonder what happened to live attendance at college football games, don’t undersell the ability of athletic departments to sabotage themselves by crapping all over potential ticket buyers.

If you’re planning on going to the Texas/USC game this fall, be prepared to buy tickets for UT’s home contests against Tulsa, TCU, Baylor, West Virginia and Iowa State as well.

Texas announced on Tuesday that single-game tickets for UT’s home game against USC on Sept. 15 will not be made available. Tickets sold through Texas will only be doled out to season ticket holders.

Such a deal.  Should be a good investment for the canny season ticket holder, who can grab the tickets and make a few extra bucks selling them on the secondary market to the same folks the school brushed aside.  Assuming they still want to go, that is.

The spirit of Steve Patterson lives on in Austin.

When you have two quarterbacks…

Per Chip Towers,

There are rumblings that Stetson Bennett may be leaving Georgia. I’ve confirmed that he’s at least thinking about it…

UGASports.com reported Tuesday that Bennett met this week with coach Kirby Smart to advise him of his intent to transfer. Smart, as one would expect, tried to talk Bennett out of it and offered to put him on scholarship. That’s a significant gesture, considering how close the Bulldogs are to being maxed out on grants-in-aid.

Man, that is something.  And Stetson’s parents didn’t even have to make a scene with the media to get Kirby to offer.

On a less snarky note, Towers also reports that Sam Vaughn is leaving the program.  Things could be getting a wee bit thin at quarterback.  Which would go a long way towards explaining that scholly offer…

Thanks for playing.

While we’re on the subject of Central Florida’s 2017 season, hey, guys, you may not have a real natty, but at least you’ve got Bill Hancock’s patronizing to get you through the lean times.

Hancock said the 13 members of the selection committee met in early March to look at everything they had done last season and while the group discussed many things, UCF was not one of the big topics.

“There wasn’t much talk about it,” Hancock said. “UCF’s schedule didn’t give them the opportunity to show what they could do against the very best teams and that’s what it came down to. They had a wonderful season and I’m very happy for (UCF athletics director) Danny (White) and their coaches and their athletes.”

Sure you are.

“That’s not how it’s done anymore.”

There is something wonderful about an Alabama head coach gently lecturing another school about trying to claim a national championship.

“If you honor and respect the system that we have, (despite) some of the imperfections that you understand that the system has, then you wouldn’t do something out of respect for the system that we have,” Saban told USA TODAY Sports. “I guess anybody has the prerogative to claim anything. But self-proclaimed is not the same as actually earning it. And there’s probably a significant number of people who don’t respect people who make self-proclaimed sort of accolades for themselves.”

I mean, who doesn’t love them some college football traditions?

Alabama claims 17 national championships, including some that are disputed and several claimed retroactively.

Can’t say I’m particularly sympathetic to Central Florida here, but, damn, Nick, your team won, okay?  There’s no need to pontificate about it.

I won’t ever let you go.

With a résumé like this — “Jim Harbaugh has never won a Big Ten title and hasn’t defeated Ohio State since becoming Michigan’s football coach in 2015.” — it’s easy to understand why Michigan’s AD wants Harbaugh at the school for life.

And when you’re making $7 million a year working for a guy who’s that easy to please, you’d have to be nuts to leave, right?
