The grind

I mentioned the other day in discussing Georgia’s 2018 schedule that it would have to run a mid-season gauntlet of seven straight conference games, three of the last four being LSU, Florida and Auburn.  I went on to say that Georgia is far from the only SEC team facing that sort of challenge.  Here’s a breakdown of Cubelic’s list:

  • Tennessee:  Florida, at Georgia, at Auburn, Alabama (you could add at South Carolina on 10/27, given UT’s recent struggles against the ‘Cocks)
  • Florida:  at Tennessee, at Mississippi State, LSU
  • Arkansas:  at Auburn, TAMU, Alabama, Ole Miss
  • Auburn:  TAMU, at Georgia, Liberty, at Alabama
  • Missouri:  Georgia, at South Carolina, at Alabama, Memphis

I don’t know how tough any stretch including Liberty can be (which is not to say playing Georgia and ‘Bama on the road will be a cake walk, obviously).  That being said, the Tennessee run looks brutal from here.  What do you guys think?

It’s almost as if TPTB at the SEC are trying to keep their foot squarely on UT’s neck with that absurd schedule. Frankly, after what we had to endure with Fulmer’s and (former commish) Kramer’s rather cozy relationship in the 90’s and early 00’s, I would like to see similar scheduling for them through 2027.

We need Tennessee to lose that stretch about 160-28, CJP will stand a good chance of coming unhinged and body slamming Fulmer on his front lawn.

Was looking at the Vols schedule yesterday. I just laughed.

Really? FU is coming off a 4-7 season. It’s UT’s turn to play Auburn from the West (we do it every year) and if the Vols fear the Cocks whose fault is that? The UT program has slipped. Tough shit. That’s what you get when you hire idiots to run your program.

Georgia plays at LSU, FU in JAX, at U.K. and Auburn all consequetively. The FU game is like an away game (sorry if I hurts anyone’s delicate fee fees by saying that) and Kentucky in Lexington at night isn’t a walkover. IMHO that stretch is just about as difficult as the others mentioned in the post. Welcome to the SEC.

    • Aside from the 50/50 split inside the stadium, the equal numbers of Georgia and Florida fans tailgating beforehand and the Gators not playing in Gainesville, (t)he FU game is like an away game…

Remind me, is the WLOCP played in Sanford Stadium this year? Oh, it’s not? Then it’s an away game.

More than half of the spectators in the ND Stadium were from Georgia last year too. I guess that wasn’t an away game either.

And while we’re discussing this subject, when exactly did the number of fans tailgating outside the stadium ever have anything to do with the outcome of the game?

          • “I remember coming over the bridge and seeing tailgates set up everywhere, people walking around, and the festivities going on,” former Georgia center Ben Jones once said. “I’m like, ‘Wow! It’s 12 o’clock in the afternoon. How long have they been out here doing this?”

Former Georgia cornerback Brandon Boykin once commented, “Coach Richt always tells everybody who hasn’t played in the game this is the closest you’ll get to the SEC championship game or national championship game scene without being in the game. Just seeing all the people tailgating, the red and the orange, and how many people that are there, it’s amazing.”

Apparently not everyone shares your perspective on this, Mayor.

Looks like someone else’s delicate fee fees were hurt too. ☺️

Hey…I wasn’t making a deliberate attempt to jerk your chain, or anybody else’s. I was making a feeble attempt at humor–and failing as usual. Feel free to jerk my chain any time you feel it is appropriate. I’m used to it. 🙂

Mayor, plenty of us are old enough to remember when Florida fans routinely complained the game in Jacksonville was a defacto home game for Georgia. It’s a great tradition that won’t change until somebody figures out a way to make obscenely large sums of money by moving it elsewhere. So, maybe concentrate your efforts there. Or take a deep breath, lean in and embrace the pain.

  6. YUP… UT’s schedule could undo any confidence that the new coaching staff builds during training camp. Not to mention greatly slow down their recruiting. Outside of UF, they could get blown out in the balance of those games and WILL be physically and mentally beat up by the time they finish that run, which could lead to additional losses. Case in point, Vandy in 2017. Won their first 3, upset Kansas State and then made the mistake of calling out Alabama. Bama destroyed them at Vanderbilt 59-0. Then went on the road and gave UF a good game and then came home and were destroyed by UGA 45-14 (and it wasn’t that close). In the Bama and UGA game they were physically ran over the entire game. Vandy wasn’t the same team after that 3 game run. Lost games they should have won.

Looking at the Florida stretch, why is it second? Tennessee isn’t good, and I think people are overvaluing Mississippi State, however many starters they’re returning.

Agree about Miss State. Unfortunately, I think Mullen’s a pretty good coach, and his loss will be felt.

I could see them carrying over to 7-5 or something like that, but they’re at best a .500-ish SEC team in my estimation. I wouldn’t be shocked if they fall to 5-7 and go 2-6 in conference play.

I have no idea why UF’s stretch was rated as the 2nd most difficult. That stretch does not look particularly difficult to me.
