Athlon’s All-SEC quarterbacks list is a puzzle.

It’s a pretty interesting combination, I’ve got to admit — Tua Tagovailoa, fresh off the greatest single-half performance in the history of college football (pay no attention to that 149.35 passer rating!), listed at first team all-SEC, and Jake Fromm, not even worthy of mention as one of the top four quarterbacks in the conference.

Maybe Athlon thinks Stetson Bennett’s gonna win the job in August.

  1. I’ll still take our guy over any QB in the SEC … TT included.

Schadenfreude may bite me on the ass, but I hope TT get’s exposed as the rookie he is next year. I still think it was a desperation play by Saban and without a blown coverage and some officiating help they would be singing a different tune.
Here’s to Jake Fromm lighting up the league. TT played, as you said, one half of one game. I would say that’s a relatively small sample size, no?
“Who we gonna push for the Heisman this year? That Fromm kid had a pretty good ’18”
    “He plays for Georgia”
“Yeah but he came in after the starter got hurt and ran the table until the natty.”
“He plays for Georgia. What about that Tava…Tagal….Tapas…, aw hell, that Hawaiian kid that plays for Saban. He had a pretty good half of football in that game and set some Hawaiian high school records. Lets make him number 1.”
Screw ’em. Run the table, Dawgs. Don’t leave them any choice but to kneel in front of Jake’s Heisman and kiss your championship rings this year.

TT will be a good QB, if not great, but this is so representative of the depth of journalists today. All about the most startling headlines and flash coverage, much of which is designed to elicit the most clicks. I fully expect Tua to succeed with Bama in 2018, he has the tools to get the job done, especially with the surrounding cast. But had Sanders not shifted the ball against his thigh on what should have been an interception in the end zone, and/or UGA had called a timeout in OT after his sack on first down, it could have been him packing his bags, not Hurts.

But none of this should take away from what Fromm did as a true freshman, that is almost criminal. What did he not prove, under some very glaring lights? Kid is a winner. He is considered a Top 10 Heisman candidate by the odds, but is only worthy of a mediocre rating by Athlon. All you need to know about Athlon’s value, imo.

Kirby is doing a good job of keeping the rat poison out of Athens. I don’t know how he does it, must be one of those 3D chess game type things.

Shoot, Tua should be first, second, and third team All-SEC.

If preseason rankings from a publication that wants to gin up its eyeball count mattered, we wouldn’t have to play the games. Looking forward to wins over them all. Jake is already 3-1 over that group.

I love this stuff. I want to read all summer about how Sackerlina is going to win the east, how Florida will avenge their loss in the WLOCP, how Tua is the greatest QB ever, and how the Dawgs have too many holes to fill to win more than 9 games. Please, keep writing more!

You guys missed the best part. Apparently Alabama’s defense has all of 3 players on 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th team All-SEC – fewer than Georgia, TAMU, SoCar, Arkansas, Miss St, and Florida. Only LSU (!), Vandy, Kentucky, Tenn, and Missouri had fewer.

The end is nigh in Tuscaloosa, apparently.

No D’Andre Walker. This list is false.

If the football doesn’t bounce off of that Alabama defensive lineman’s helmet, Tua would’ve thrown a pick on his second series that lead Fromm taking us in for 7 to put the game out of reach.

I don’t know what else Fromm could’ve done within our offense last year to show he’s the real deal. He stepped up every time we needed him, but was never going to be asked to throw it around all game long.

I don’t normally get peeved at these lists, and there are some good quarterbacks on there, but to leave Fromm off is BS. And as indicated above, I’m not convinced that Tua’s what he’s been made out to be either. He made some great plays but he also made some ill advised decisions in that half of football. Tua will be successful with all of the talent around him, but from what little I’ve seen of him and from a season of Fromm, I’d take Fromm, especially in our offense, all day long.

I wonder if Jake With-A-Chip-On-His-Shoulder Fromm cracks the Top 4… 🤔

  13. He’s being penalized for UGA’S style of play last year. Rely on the ponies and throw only when needed. The line will be better, the receiving corps are better and a full year in the system. Look for Fromm to carry this team at times and end up in the top two of this group.

I hope Kirby reads this and takes the brakes off next year. If you recall, by the start of the 4th in most games all JF was asked to do was hand the ball off to 2nd string backs. Get them on their heels at the end of the game and let Fromm go nuts, pad the hell out of some stats.

First, we all know this list is fabricated with stats from lesser opponents by most team’s standards. Athlon is full of pome-de-rue.

Second, leaving out the UGA RBs and placing the “also-ran”s from other teams as a prediction for next year really puts Athlon in a sinkhole that will cavitate more and more over the summer.

Third, nice to know that all the other teams have such great OLs and D players that outshine both Georgia and Alabama. Lassan will soon be forgotten as a writer that had one bullshit article in Athlon on the national sports media stage before becoming the next WH counsel.

Yeah, I see it too. Athlon wants clicks from fanbases outside of Birmingham and Athens. Best way to do that is generate links for other blogs and such. Makes sense.
