“The dream is to play.”

The heart wants what the heart wants, and in Stetson Bennett’s case, that’s more than being a scout team beast.

Preferred walk-on Stetson Bennett IV, the No. 3 quarterback on the Georgia depth chart, will head to junior college. He will then look to parlay that experience into another opportunity in major college football…

His departure creates a precarious situation for the Bulldogs, given that Fromm and Fields are the team’s only scholarship quarterbacks.

“Those guys, first of all, are unbelievable guys,” he said. “Just great human beings. There are also great ballplayers. I just thought that it would be extremely tough for me being a walk-on to beat them both out.”

That made UGA arguably the toughest QB depth chart to crack in the SEC, if not the nation.

“The dream is to play,” Bennett said. “It was cool being at Georgia. I loved sharing those moments at Georgia last year but the dream is to play. It just wasn’t the same growing up as a boy who wanted to play at Georgia if you are not out there. That’s the thing. It was cool. I would love to be the starting quarterback at the University of Georgia. But just being there and being on the team, that’s not good enough for me.”

“I’m going to go play somewhere,” Bennett said. “I think that’s evolved to more of the dream than just being somewhere at a place because you grew up loving it. I think now the dream is to go play and go win championships somewhere. That’s what I feel like. I am going to go chase that dream now.”

That sounds remarkably more realistic than what I’ve heard out of certain commenters here.  And who can blame him for wanting that, especially after hearing the confirmations of his abilities after his great scout team work last season?

I have no idea if he’s SEC-ready, but the more relevant consideration is that he knows he’s not first team at Georgia-ready.  Go chase that dream, Stetson.

Of course, that leaves Kirby in something of a pickle, as he’s back to inexperienced walk-ons backing up his two stud quarterbacks.  (If he were Mark Richt, no doubt there would be some grumbling about his roster management.  But I digress.)  It will be interesting to see if he tries to chase a quarterback to fill Bennett’s role.  It will also be interesting to see what, if any, impact this has in the fall regarding how Fromm and Fields are deployed.

Best of luck to the kid…signed arguably a top 10 Qb three years in a row…Hard to fault that.

If he can’t convince a walk on to stay, how will he convince a five star QB to do so?

Easy, just tell the truth. More to do with the individual and his ability than Smart’s convincing skills. The individual ultimately makes the decision to transfer or not.

Hate to see it, but if playing time is his goal, he has a better chance transferring than staying….good luck to him.

Because the five star has a better chance to play?

He will always be a DGD in my opinion..
I hope he finds a place to play and does his thing. You are only young once. Athens will always be here.

Have to wonder if this affects how Fields is deployed during the season. Even if Kirby wants to get Fields some snaps in specific packages/situations, is the risk minimizing strategy to keep him on the sidelines just in case? Or do you have to play him some to get game reps, just in case he’s needed? Hopefully we can find a grad transfer to help out but that might be a tricky pitch given the dearth of playing time we can offer.

You cant play for injuries, it is just dumb. If somehow both Fromm and Fields go down during the year, then it is just a wash. This is only an issue for the fact that now our Scout team QB will be crappier, as Bennett was likely pretty good at giving the mobile look.

I can’t blame the kid but this sucks for us as a team.

Is there a judo kid or a grad transfer out there happy with riding pine?

Can’t blame him for wanting to play.

  11. Good luck, but he knew the day he accepted a PWO slot at UGA, he was likely never to take a meaningful snap between the hedges. According to Rivals, he claimed 2 FBS offers (Georgia Southern and MTSU) and 2 FCS (Columbia and Mercer).

OMG. When I read “Chasing a Quarterback” I had a Greyson Lambert flashback. Please don’t do that anymore.

10-1 as a starter including win over Penn State in the bowl game and never complained his senior year behind Eason. Georgia was fortunate to have him.

I dont know. I think CMR would at least try to make him a DB or fair catch punt receptionist.

Having been around so many years remember a couple when bad luck with injuries and we were down to the 3rd or 4th guy. Got to get Fields on field early and often and if another Grayson out there snatch him up.

Why Juco? Why not stay at uga, practice and train with the best, graduate in 3 years and have two years of eligibility as a grad transfer? He would also have a puncher’s chance of starting if the two in front of him go down. I’ve seen us down’ to no 3 a couple of times. If not that why waste a year at a juco? Just transfer where you think you can play and sit the year. Juco does very little to prepare a qb for the big leagues.

    • A walk on with no experience more than being 3rd string in 3 years of being on the team…..hard to imagine there would be too many teams interested in even talking to him at that point. But go tear it up for a year at a JUCO and he’ll have a lot more options.

Coaching matters, but there’s nothing better for player development than actually playing.

I don’t know. What if you don’t tear it up in Juco? What if you don’t beat out the guy who is there? Where do you go from there? I think the intrigue of being the walkon back up at UGA that everybody thinks is all that and a slice of bread but who couldn’t beat out Fromm and fields should be a desirable commodity. to at least some D-1 schools. Plus, when you are all done you likely have finished with a degree from UGA and a master’s.

        • I think you’re overestimating his exposure. No matter how much he’s been bragged about, I can guarantee you almost nobody outside the UGA fan base could identify who he is.

And if he doesn’t play well at the JUCO well level and doesn’t end up with any offers he likes – I bet Kirby would welcome him back as a PWO if that’s what he wanted. But if he can’t perform at the JUCO level, why would you think he’d able to go win a starting spot at another school after riding the pine for 3 years? If he wants to play, there’s no real argument in favor of him staying in Athens.

How could anyone possibly grumble about roster management? Kirby’s landed three 5-star QBs in 3 recruiting classes! Somehow I think we’ll manage to get by if a walk-on QB transfers.

I hope Stetson i hugely successful whatever he does and wherever he goes. He is very talented and I think he’ll play somewhere this year. Since he wasn’t on scholarship, I presume he can transfer to wherever he likes.
Now we must realize that should Fromm or Fields goes down, gets the flue for a week, etc, we’re going to have some tight sphincters. I’m pretty sure this means we’ll see more put into the WildDawg formation..more plays, options, etc.
And I’d still like to have SB as #3. Kind of a sad day.
