Steele is back, baby.

For me, the summer doesn’t officially get underway until I have my Steele preseason mag in hand.  That day came yesterday.  352 pages.  The print is still small and the abbreviations flow.  I love it all.

I’ll post several in the weeds items about Georgia during the week, but for now, I thought I’d share a few things more in an overview sense.

  • By far, the funniest thing I’ve read so far is Steele’s reaction to his inaccuracy predicting the outcome of the 2017 season.  I’m sure most of you know he touts himself as being the most accurate of all the preview mags on those.  Last season, he finished seventh, poorly enough that it dragged down his three year average from first to third.  He’s pissed.  And he’s not hiding it, either — it starts on the very first page.
  • If you want intentional humor, here’s something he writes about Georgia Tech:  “GT was the toast of college football at the end of 2014… In 2015 they opened up 2-0, but then were just ‘toast’ after that, going 1-9.”  He’ll be here all week, folks, try the veal.
  • His playoff field this season is pretty standard stuff — Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State and Washington.
  • For those of you who sense that Alabama is in the very early stages of some decline, he couldn’t disagree more strongly.  He sees the Tide being ridiculously dominant in 2018.  One example, his Plus/Minus power ratings:  Georgia’s 126.45 would top every conference in the country, with the exceptions of the ACC and Big Ten, where the Dawgs would trail Clemson and Ohio State by about a point.  Oh yeah, and the SEC, where Alabama betters Georgia’s number by almost thirteen points.

Tomorrow I’ll look at the group position ratings.  (SPOILER ALERT:  You’ll like ’em.)

I agree. I think we can beat them we just have to play our best. I mean several other teams have beat them that didn’t have world class #1 40 5 star commits.

We dont need 2 or 3 more years of number 1 classes. We need to get our head out our ass.

I have read others say the same thing, but I just don’t see it that way. Alabama won that game with a nasty D-line, a true freshman QB off the bench, true freshman WR’s and true freshman RB’s. Georgia did not have the young talent on the bench to plug and play, nor do we have that type of depth today. For one game, maybe the Dawgs can play with Alabama every few years or so, but to think we can do the same this season with so many holes to fill, especially on the defensive side of the ball, is a huge leap in my opinion. Kirby has done wonders in recruiting, but he has a ways to go before we come close to stockpiling Alabam type talent. No, Georgia is not there…yet.

Jake Fromm probably disagrees with your assessment.

So would Hinton. He had Swift on his list at 26; none of the Bama frosh except Tua were on it.

          • His talent assessment is bass-ackwards. The talent gap between Alabama and Georgia wasn’t in last year’s classes. It’s in the classes before.

I’m going to be interested to see where Connelly ends up on his assessment. He was soooo prepped for a “told you so” season last year and had to settle for a “well, both Georgia and Richt came out better in the end.” He doesn’t often let his emotions lead his analysis, but there was more than a whiff of it last pre-season.

You thought we would be lucky to win 6-7 games last year, unless my memory fails me.

Alabama’s offense is going to be stupid good – not because OMG TUA but because they have ridiculous talent and depth on that side of the ball. Guys who will get drafted hoping for snaps. Maybe Locksley blows it as an OC, but bringing Enos to the table was a huge win for them. They’re even deep on the sidelines.

But they are going to give up some big plays early with 6 new guys in the secondary and a new defensive staff. Combine that with Tua’s mindset that he can squeeze a pass in anywhere, and maybe the seeds are there for an early upset. Once that secondary grows up, though, they will be better than 2017 Bama.

It’s funny to think of Dawgs and Bammers rooting for Aubie, but an Aubie win over Washington raises the odds of Georgia and Alabama both making the playoff considerably, doesn’t it?

Trying to imagine how many heads explode if Alabama gets into the playoffs again without winning the SEC.

You say that like you’re hoping Bama gets in. Personally, I don’t want Alabama and Georgia in the Playoff. I just want Georgia, and the less we have to play Bama, the better.

I have always enjoyed the Phil Steele and ordered it for my Dad for father’s day this year, but I am not ordering it for myself. One thing I have noticed is since the CFP started, not just 2017 season, his final 4 picks have been pretty off. Glad he is starting to self assess. He also prints the MAG so early that many transfers are happening AFTER it ships…wish he would release a supplementary insert or appendix towards the end of summer/fall camp to show the truly updated rosters. We saw the chart here recently about the rate of transfers increasing so significantly, that most teams have many roster name change’s by 1st kickoff. I also noticed many errors with fact’s & figures the last couple issues and called their office to point these out for better edit checks and they just said thanks for that and didn’t offer any refunds. Anyone can put Bama down in a final 4, but outside of them, he is lost. I will gladly take your updates here instead!

He offers way more info for his magazine than anyone else. For me it is the only magazine I buy every year. I feel like there is at least a method to his madness. It’s the best 14$ I’ll spend all off season.

Steele is pretty obnoxious about how right he is. Even when he is not. And the print is too small. Don’t get it anymore. Fuck him
