Paralysis by analysis

I genuinely don’t know how much snark to push at Pete Fiutak’s top 30 quarterbacks list.  On the one hand, he’s got Jalen Hurts at #12 and Tua Tagovailoa, for whom I really should come up with a catchy anagram, at #7.

On the other hand, he’s got three SEC quarterbacks, including Fromm at #4, ranked ahead of Tua.

I feel so conflicted.

Some very nice comments about Fromm, and Fields.

Is it just me, or is anyone else wondering if the Fields hype is getting a little out of control? Expecting him to be in a legitimate race to replace Fromm in the starting lineup is a lot to put on a guy. I expect him to be very good, but he may need time to develop. Maybe he will be ready right off the bat, but the expectations on him are going to be a very high bar to clear. It’s almost as though if he doesn’t get a few series a game where he excels then he’ll be a disappointment.

On the other hand, I think what Fromm accomplished and just how good he is is getting looked over. Anyone who thinks he’s a game manager with an accurate arm apparently hasn’t seen him throw an out route. That’s a throw that NFL coaches look for and one that you have to have plenty of arm to make and Fromm throws it as well as anyone in the country.

It’s going to be a situation ripe for controversy, but after the smooth season where Fromm stepped in and held the job against Eason that had absolutely no drama in it I’m confident that Kirby knows how to handle quarterback competitions.

Writers have to have something to write about and a qb controversy is great click bait. Word leaking out of Athens is that Fields is in no danger of pushing Fromm. Fields is a great talent but the full speed defense was giving him lots of trouble.

I hope to see Fields get lots of mop up duty to polish his skills. I hope he doesn’t have to come in like Fromm did and take over as starter.

I can’t Imagine their being a better time and place for the new redshirt rules than UGA this year. We signed what on paper is far and away the best class in our history and these guys can play 4 games and maintain their redshirts. I know everyone says the chances of Fields redshirting are small but if the guy can play meaningful snaps in 4 games and still be able to redshirt that would be optimal. That hasn’t been the talk I have been hearing but it seems more plausible with the new rules. May be to much to ask.
