Here’s a question for you: ever thought about how Alabama’s and Georgia’s seasons would have played out if Kirby hadn’t flipped Jake Fromm from Alabama?

Yep. IMO we still would have been SEC champs but would have lost to OU with Eason at the helm. Also we wouldn’t have been quite as dominating as well. Speaking of Eason, I’m curious how he fares at Udub. I really hope he makes a splash.
Hard to say with any certainty but it’s July so but I’ll play. Probably a struggle win against Appalachian State, lose to Norte Dame(no reason, just a gut feeling), still win the SEC, lose to Oklahoma. Then watch OU go on to beat Clemson or Ohio State in the natty because we didn’t beat ND and weren’t #1 when we lost to Auburn making Alabama’s loss to them not as good. Then turn to the recruiting boards and say how 2018 is gonna be “the year”.
Nauta and Ridley are targeted more, Godwin’s numbers suffer, more deep home run balls, less slant passes, Bama doesn’t get Tua in 2017, we don’t get Fields in 2018, and Jacob Eason is regarded as the #1 quarterback in the SEC/NCAA and a Heisman candidate for 2018 by Dari Nowkah or whoever proclaims those things.
“….but it’s July so I’ll play”
Like MD said, it’s early.
Think about what Alabama’s quarterback situation would be like today. Insane.
would the Hawaiian kid still have gone there? If not, where would he have gone? would Fromm have redshirted? Would Eason have been just as effective with the improved O line and WR play? The ripple effect is
impossible to know, but fascinating to contemplate
Eason is still at Georgia. We go something like10-2. Beat Auburn and win the SEC, but lose to Oklahoma by 14. Fields comes in and takes the job.
Stetson Bennett steps in, the whole season goes to shit, and Kirby’s on the hot seat because top recruits are fleeing in droves.
This, sadly, is probably the outcome. Although I believe if Kirby hadn’t flipped Fromm, he would have likely flipped Davis Mills from Stanford.
Food for thought – Fromm to Bama – Tua to UGA – now what happens?
I don’t want to think about that. Fromm is the straw that stirs the drink. If he is at Bama, they wouldn’t lose a game for 4 years. I think a lot of folks don’t appreciate how good Fromm really is. Good times are here, boys.
^^This. Fromm was key to everything that happened last year. Without Fromm we lose to ND, Auburn (twice) and don’t make the playoff. 10-3 assuming we win the bowl. 9-4 if we lose to UCF in the bowl. Sound familiar? Very CMR.
Eason may have been a pleasant surprise, but I was expecting something like that (a CMR-ish season) behind him. Lo and behold, Fromm was off the charts for a freshman QB and I’m not sure even UGA fans appreciate how good he was (like Gurkha said).
No one here has any idea…
I’ve just thrown up. Thanks for that.
The thought crossed my mind a few times actually. His recruiting of this kid was one of the top coaching activities of his tenure so far. Not afraid to aggressively pursue and over-stack talent….I guess any coach wants that but few can convince a kid to come sit behind a 5 star.
I agree. We’ve never seen Kirby’s current level of recruiting at UGA. We had solid recruiting under CMR, but this is different.
Regardless of outcome I still dream of the highlight reel Eason would have put together with last year’s team. It was frustrating the number of blowouts and comfortable victories we had and they didn’t even let the kid throw a pass.
LOL no way.
Eason just doesn’t have it. Fromm does.
He’s got to be being sarcastic.
If we’d signed McEachern’s Hockman, instead of Fromm we’d be in quite the pickle. Bennett or Ramsey would’ve been the starter during Eason’s injury.
Considering how well Fromm runs Chaney’s offense, I wonder if the later would still be an assistant with us.
I’ve thought about this a little bit on drives to/from work. Several here have said something similar to 1)Lose to ND, 2) win the SEC, and 3) lose to OU. While I can’t agree/disagree with that as there’s really no way to win/lose an argument there. Where I get stuck is wondering if it’s possible that the committee doesn’t take 2 SEC schools in that case. Is it possible that a) UGA doesn’t make it even though they’re SEC champs but have 2 losses or b) they use a 2-loss SEC champ as a reason to leave Bama out? Obviously we can’t know, but it’s possible that UGA doesn’t play OU in that spot either by virtue of not being there or by virtue of not being ranked #2 in the playoff bracket (because Bama isn’t in). Maybe UGA is in ranked #4 and plays Clem’s Son. Don’t know, but it’s fun to think about.
“It’s not like we’re saving ourselves,” quarterback Stetson Bennett said. “We’re going every play like we’re trying to do something. I don’t really know how to answer that. It’s not like we just flip a switch.”-- The Athletic, 11/13/22
