Athlon’s “SEC coaches talk shit behind each other’s back” annual thing is out… and it’s a little disappointing, to be honest. I mean, dig into it and here are the two most negative comments you’ll find:
“I like Ed (Orgeron), I really do. He can win there, and maybe he can develop into a guy that stays there a while. But he has to let his coaches coach. What he did with (former offensive coordinator) Matt Canada was ridiculous. You paid him all that money to get on board, and then a couple weeks into the season, you’re bailing on him. I don’t know all the specifics and if Canada wasn’t a good fit with the rest of the staff, but I know what Canada has accomplished in this game. He knows what he’s doing. If you’re an LSU fan, your hope is Ed does, too — and that his new OC will fit.”
“The Derek Dooley hire (at offensive coordinator) was off the radar. I don’t know what he’s going to do there. I don’t necessarily think it was a bad hire. Just surprising.”
Man, that’s some bland pablum.
Athlon hasn’t been the same since Tuberville left the conference.

Those comments were like going to The Cheetah on Spring St. and seeing Amish women dancing around milking stools rather than enhanced ‘coeds’ on poles. Maybe that reflects 6 new SEC head coaches and a general reluctance to trash talk….Or Pruitt’s comments could not be translated into English and Boom’s were all one syllable followed by an explanation point.

Maybe it was always just bullshit but the original Athlon writers who made up the salacious “anonymous source” bullshit in previous years got better gigs at the major news outlets like Fox, CNN, HuffPo and the like.

I never understood the Matt Canada hire. He has a history of producing mediocre to good offenses and getting fired for being a pain in the ass. He goes and has one really good year with Pitt and all of a sudden everyone thinks he is the best OC on the planet. His scheme doesn’t fit the talent profile that LSU recruits. Ensminger might do a good job if he keeps things simple. The offense was mostly functional when he took over in 2016.
