It’s almost like the ship isn’t sinking. Even Munson might have felt a pang of optimism after reading that piece.

To all of those who dismissed James Cook as a nice piece but not much chance to play, he may have a little Sony in him.

I figured they’d use him in the same receiving/edge run role they employed with Swift much of the season.

Agree, he is an explosive speedster, no doubt. Can see him in the role Swift played last year for sure. I just don’t see him having the ability to make power runs between the tackles, but would love him to have somewhere near Sony’s inside power before he leaves Athens but his frame doesn’t look thick enough. Swift has a more powerful lower body and may reach that level, see Cook as a swing pass/screen target, and getting to the edge on sweeps and reverses.

Swift is a complete back. It’s just that there weren’t enough carries with Chubb and Michel there, so they used him where they could. I have no idea if Cook can run inside like you’d want, but some guys are sneaky powerful.

I was at the open practice on Saturday. It was impressive. Non stop movement in brutal temps. It was miserable in the shade. Rep after rep after rep. They went 1:15 before taking a brief break. No confusion. No disarray. Everyone knew what to do and where to go. This is a deep, conditioned, disciplined and focused team.

Lots of 7 on 7 and 11 on 11. Helmets only. Everything scripted.

Focus on defense was getting the ball. Focus on offense was getting the ball to the open guy. No mistakes went uncorrected.

Zeus stood out even with the brace. Looked bigger, faster and quicker than anyone else out there. Reminded me of seeing Eric Dickerson play live in NFL once. He just somehow stood out when he had the ball. Hard to explain but you know “special” when you see it. Hopefully they can get him acclimated and healthy and unleash him November-January. No one will have an answer for that guy.

Fields and Fromm are not far apart even right now. Fields makes every throw look effortless.

Lecounte covers so much space it’s just amazing to watch his speed and athleticism. Great ball skills.

We don’t appear to have a true fullback, even a walk on. If they do they never lined up in the I that I saw. I saw a split backfield but no I formation.

Landers and Bush on the field at the same time is just unfair. Robertson would probably be our No. 1 guy if he’s eligible. Just that good.

A literal embarrassment of riches and they are being pushed by the coaches and each other. Our second team would win the east.

Give the points. Take the dawgs.

I’m beginning to think Georgia’s biggest issue this year might be Bobby Bowden syndrome – a team so talented in comparison to its regular season slate that it never learns how to grind out a win when the rare occasion calls for it. LSU and Auburn on the cross-over would normally be a grimace, but those challenges look pretty welcome at this point.

That sort of happened last year in the 2 losses didn’t it?

Auburn was totally different up front then anything we’d seen to that point and Alabama took away our run first identity in the second half.

Having LSU in BR in the middle of the season will help, but I agree: when everyone on your schedule sucks it’s hard to shift gears when you get to teams that are loaded at the LOS, like Alabama. Auburn will really good on defense especially up front. The OL is almost all new.

Last year we had the mostly legit ND team also, that’s a challenge we won’t have this year unfortunately.

I think LSU’s defensive front 7 may be more legit than ND’s.

No doubt but I also think that ND was the game where the team clicked. If the game were played again I think UGA wins more comfortably than a late defensive stand.

Of course you can never discount LSU at home, they can play above their ceiling on any given Saturday in Death Valley and then get beat by a Sun Belt team the next.

I thought at the time that we kept shooting ourselves in the foot with silly penalties, or we would have been up by 2 or 3 scores at the end. There were a lot of good things that happened, but we seemed not too far from routing them that particular night, I thought. As the season wore on and they played pretty well most of the way, I thought maybe we had been lucky not to beat ourselves, but mostly that we must be pretty good to manhandle them (for the most part) enough to win on the road with a rookie QB in his first start.

Agreed, I also believe that later on the defense clamps down even more so, and a more open playbook with a QB that was not starting for the 1st time prevents some 3 and outs. UGA wins by 2+ scores. In the end by 1 or 20 they have W allowing for the title run.

Whatever the case I believe LSU is better on D but assuming Fromm is still starting UGA will be in a better place than they were against ND last year.

UGA has historically done okay in Tiger Stadium, I think we are 5-5-1. Ironically I think we have a losing record against them in both Athens & Atlanta.

What are you talking about? We have to go to South Carolina early in the season, and we are expected to lose there. I know we will get their best shot. 😉

I wouldn’t say expected to lose but some of the Bobble Heads are promoting it as the upset weekend.

UGA should go 2 of 3 against SCU, LSU, and Auburn and if they do a trip to Atlanta with a rematch against Bama.

I am not on the Gus Bus, I was picking them last year as very likely to win the West. They have to replace 4 OL starters and 2 very talented RBs. Auburn may get 2nd in the West but that is more a statement of their decline. The good news for Auburn is they get LSU at home.

I thought they handled the Alabama game well, even if they had no answer for Payne late. It shouldn’t have come down to that, and it wouldn’t have if not for some bad officiating.

          Or Raekwon.

I agree we played great and deserved to win. I just think our OL needed to not get “rag dolled” up front and we win going away. Refs couldn’t have saved them then.

That’s true. Alabama blowing up the middle of the line on Fromm’s second pick changed the course of the game. If Georgia just gets a field goal after taking over at the 40, they win.

Yeah. I didn’t like putting it up there. At all. Reminiscent of what the falcons did after Julio’s great catch in the SB. You run the ball, play for 3. I think we had them down 13-0 at that point so 16-0 is huge. The TO was a killer.

Playing for the FG also takes a more time off the clock than turning it over…makes ‘Bama go further after a kick-off and gives the Defense some room to make plays. Of course, the refs would have still found a way for us to lose.

^ This. We are not going to hold up well against Bama’s D-Line so long as we have Baker and Galliard on the OL. Hopefully one of the young Guards can earn that LG spot and Kendal can go back to playing the swing lineman. We should be able to get by with just Galliard. The OL in 2019 will be a sight to behold though.

If nothing else, it gives the coaches near-term focal points to keep everyone fully engaged. Because at some point, teams this good realize that the next team up on the schedule doesn’t have a prayer. Which is how CFB has so many endearing (if you’re on the right side of them) upsets scrambling things every year. Kind of the sport’s calling card.

(Until we go to 8 and then 16. Then they don’t matter anymore.)

I find Mike Griffith to be a bit of a fanboy and a big step down from Seth Emerson. I attended the first half of practice and I don’t see how you come away with so much confidence based on some drills and skeleton plays.

Mike Griffith is a big time fanboy. He’s so over the top on their podcast that it’s a turnoff. He sounds like he’s sucking up to the fanbase.

This isn’t to doubt the exciting things happening in practice or that may come this year, but it really has been a step down from Emerson. We’ve been spoiled by some really good beat writers in the past, but I don’t think Griffith will be one of them.

  10. There is no reason the 2018 offense shouldn’t be one of the best we’ve ever had. Elite talent and experience at every single skill position. I’m still a kinda paranoid Dawg fan but the same goes for the OL. I don’t think I’m even considering D Robertson or our new 5 star QB in this assessment either.

The 2018 season could be the slight opposite of last, in that the offense can carry while all the new guys on D get their footing. A big concern is special teams- gotta replace a damn good punter and we would have just played in a nice bowl last year had it not been for ST. Overall, though, replacing all those guys on D is my biggest concern but that’s slightly eased by the talent that is there.

We’ll play Bama in the SECC this year. Auburn could be tough but I don’t see them beating Bama again. LSU could be good but who the hell knows. USC and Flarduh stand the only chance in the east. I don’t really consider this arrogance, we’re kinda head and shoulders above the east in talent and coaching.

The biggest advantage we have this year will be that the only way we don’t play for the SEC championship is if we lose in the east. One loss to either LSU or Auburn would be forgiven with an SEC championship, especially if it’s with a win over Alabama.

It’s hard to imagine a scenario where the SEC champion doesn’t make it to the playoff, and that means we could have a get out of jail free card up our sleeves after LSU or Auburn.

Pulling for Tae Crowder. Awesome to see a kid jump on a scholarship when he was not the 1st choice, stick with a coaching change, and play where the coaches put him. Hope he racks up a ton of tackles this season.

Yep, he deserves a nice reward for his team attitude, and the work ethic to put him in this position. Expect to see him play a lot this year, even if not in the starter role.
