The best shot at a fair shot

Another reason to love Kirby Smart:  he overcame Cam Newton to sign Justin Fields.

Fields had played in Newton’s seven-on-seven league after his junior season at Harrison, and the Carolina Panthers QB had offered some advice to the hot-shot recruit.

Newton’s career began at Florida, where he rode the bench behind a legend named Tim Tebow. Thing is though, Newton thought he was better than Tebow, and he wasn’t alone. The problem, however, was Tebow was ensconced, a fan favorite, a guy they ended up building a statue of at Florida. The way Newton saw it, that’s all that mattered to Florida’s coaches.

“I’m a Tebow fan, so I can’t say definitively Cam was better,” Pablo Fields said, “but that was a quote from Cam to Justin.”

Newton ended up transferring to Auburn, winning a Heisman and a national championship and being selected first overall in the 2011 NFL draft, but the end result wasn’t the point. Newton told Fields to be sure that, wherever he landed, they were willing to give him a fair shot from day one.

That all seemed reasonable enough last October and November. But then Georgia won the SEC, won the Rose Bowl, came within one defensive snap of winning the whole darn thing. Would the Bulldogs really bench Fromm, the guy who took them to the brink of a national championship, in favor of a true freshman?

“That’s a roll of the dice,” Pablo Fields said.

In the end, Smart convinced the family Justin would get a fair shot, and it’s a sentiment that, however far-fetched it still seems, has been repeated by Georgia’s staff this month.

Maybe stealing that laptop was part of a plan.

I don’t think that young Can just “transferred to Auburn”. He may tell it that way.

Auburn quarterback Cam Newton was facing possible expulsion from the University of Florida for academic cheating when he transferred to junior college in the spring of 2009, FoxSports.com reported Monday.

Newton, a Heisman Trophy front-runner, is said to have been caught cheating three times, including putting his name on someone else’s paper without that student’s knowledge.

Newton attended Florida in 2007 and 2008 before transferring to Blinn College, a junior college in Texas.

He was absolutely not better than Tim Tebow as a freshman. Only after a full season at Blinn and 3-4 games at Auburn was he able to turn it on and fully realize his potential.

Putting aside the theft of the laptop and the cheating on schoolwork, both of which show a lack of moral fiber and should have resulted in Cam Newton being bounced out of FU and all of college athletics permanently, athletically Cam may have been better than Tebow all along but didn’t get the snaps with the first team either in practice or in games to get the experience to show he was better. All that said, Cam is a despicable human being who should have been banned for life from all college football because of the shakedown he and his daddy engaged in leading up to Cam signing with Auburn. When asked by his best friend why he went to Auburn rather than Missy State to be reunited with Mullen, his favorite coach from FU days, Cam stated: “The money was too much.” That says it all. Instead of being cast into the dustbin of history the NCAA let him lead a crooked program to a national championship, win the Heisman and be the number one pick in the NFL draft, assuring him riches beyond measure for the rest of his life. If I ever had any respect for the NCAA, I lost it then.

Just one more reason not to like an infinitely unlikable person.

You know if Urban Meyer won’t cover it up and keep you: it’s bad.

This brings us back to does Fields redshirt if he can’t jump Fromm on the depth chart? Otherwise I think he transfers.

  12. Cam was better. Maybe not right away, but he was as unstoppable a college QB as anyone has ever seen.

Yeah, especially when he gets away with punching defenders in the face as he is being tackled,

Sure, 23 year old Cam in his 4th year of college was better that 23 year old Tim in his 4th year of college. The premise of Cam’s comments was that 19 year old college freshman Cam in his first year away from home was better than 22 year old Tim in his 3rd year of college. I disagree with Cam on that point.

Yawn. What a boring “comment” on a story with real meaning to a real current UGA player.

Cam is a terrible human being.

I hope that Justin never acts like that guy.

He can play like that guy. Just don’t act like that guy.

Not at all surprised that Stidham, Auburn’s current qb and top rated I might add, also came from the junior college ranks after a failed stint at Baylor.

That he came from a junior college is nothing remarkable or odd. That he transferred to Auburn is, and reeks of more Auburn cheating, underhandedness, and dishonesty.

Such fucking scumbags. All of them.

Is AJC Dawgnation trying to create a QB controversy by talking to Fields’ father and then Kirby about his comments?
