One more thing as a follow up to my post yesterday about that anonymous poll of coaches that seemed to be tilted — pure coincidence, no doubt — against African-American head coaches.
As Bruce Feldman ($$) notes,
Said one of the anonymous coaches of Taggart: “He was only at Oregon for one year, and it’s not like he really transformed that program — and that’s a place that’s won for a long time. Not that he isn’t good — he’s won. But usually when you get a job like Florida State, it’s because you’ve won some championships or done something really amazing.”
The guy Taggart followed at FSU, Jimbo Fisher, had never coached a game before he got the job replacing Bobby Bowden.
Well, in its own way, isn’t that really amazing?

I see Shaw as tied for the top spot in the underrated category as well as the leader in the poll of coaches who run the cleanest programs. He was listed as having received votes as overrated but he wasn’t in the list of the top 5 of that category.
I’d say Shaw is well respected in coaching circles based upon his top spot in two polls.

The reason I was surprised we didn’t back up a couple of Brinks trucks in front of his house in Palo Alto … the guy can coach. Everyone thought Stanford would return to sucking after Khaki Pants left for the NFL. Shaw has proven them all wrong.

Don’t see Shaw as underrated, or overrated. He seems to be universally respected, would bet he is among the top dozen coaches in any poll you would see. Great guy, I think he has found a way to benefit from working with high quality kids and gets the most out of lesser talented players. Good on him.
It isn’t just people in Tallahassee who realize Jumbo was not all that great of a head coach. He may continue to win games in College Station due almost entirely to talent, and knowing how to choose a great coordinator. Stealing the Wake/ND DC alone will have A&M competitive soon.

I’ll go a step further than Bruce Feldman. Florida State has been on the radar only slightly longer than Florida. I don’t see championships or anything amazing in Bobby Bowden’s prior resume. I think anonymous coach is a dim bulb jock, but also FSU could have been eager to hire a black head coach.
And when Blutarsky sets off “pure coincidence, no doubt”, he wouldn’t be trying to stir the pot a little, would he? 🙂

GTP, not claiming to be a news blog but a discussion blog (I think..and expect to be corrected if I’m wrong about that) would almost necessarily have it’s pot stirred a good bit. If you piss people off, or make them really happy, they will read and some even post. If you’re mundane and balanced people will say, “so what”.
It’s not all about “clicks” though. The dedication and passion for UGA football drives Blutarsky and the filthy riches he’s reaping are just gravy.
Stirring the pot just thickens it.
My worry is he’ll make so much filthy lucre with GTP that he’ll sell it to Derek (not a bad move, BTW) or Chili (terrible move) and buy one of those expensive stadium suites and forget all about us little folk.

I can buy Taggart being overrated (though I don’t know, I just haven’t followed him that closely).
But Franklin and Shaw have proved themselves as far as I’m concerned. If you can win consistently at Stanford or Vandy, then clearly you know what you’re doing—which makes GTs insistence that someone like Fish Fry is the only way they can compete all the more hilarious.

Taggert made USF into a decent team. He wasn’t at Oregon long enough to count. And he’s certainly more qualified than Jimbo was when he took the FSU spot.

Franklin is an ass on the order of Corch, but what he did at Vandy was pretty amazing and he’s managed to pull Pedophile State out of the hole they dug themselves.

A common misconception fostered by media types who really don’t know what they’re talking about. Stalin, Hitler and Mussolini were all part of the same branch of the political tree–just different leaves. There really wasn’t much difference between the National Socialist Party which ran Germany under Hitler and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics under Stalin–the names really say it all. The two dictators hated each other personally and the two countries were enemies but both countries were totalitarian regimes and, by definition, were on the left i.e. concentration of power in the central government and complete control over the daily lives of the people like in the book/movie “1984.” The opposite of totalitarianism is anarchy–no government at all. There is no such thing as a “right-wing dictatorship.” Right wingers want less government, some to the point of absurdity. All totalitarian governments are, by definition, left wing. Leftists hate that so they try to turn it around and pretend that dictators are right-wing. Extreme right wing is no government at all–mobs rioting in the streets, etc.–not more totalitarianism.

“Socialist” meant something very different in early 20th century Germany. Hitler demonized Communists in the same way he demonized Jews. He loathed them, and he held up their ideology as an existential threat to Germany, part of the global Jewish plot to undermine German hegemony.
Dictatorships are function of power, not the politics of left or right. Hitler preached German purification, racial and cultural. Purification politics are all about excluding certain people, removing them from the population, forcibly if necessary. My mother-in-law is a died in the wool Republican, and that’s pretty much where she sits right now. Mexicans: deport them (even the legals). Muslims: deport them (even the legals). Gay people: let them go back into their closets where she doesn’t have to see them. Kill the families of terrorists? “Well, it’s them or us.”
The Nazi label has been thrown around so often and so inaccurately that it doesn’t mean anything anymore. But what Hitler preached is very much alive and well in certain circles on the right. They just changed the scapegoats.

I agree in a sense. It is true that the ideologues are the most active folks and they will drag their party one way or the other ideologically.
The question for me is which way do we need to adjust to? Just because you elect someone from one extreme or the other doesn’t mean the country is remade. There are minor shifts at best, even over 8 years. Obama didn’t turn the country into Sweden and Trump won’t make us 1939 Germany. I won’t argue with anybody who says that they’d like to do both. It just can’t happen. Too many controls on power. Which is a good thing.
For the life of me I just can’t figure out any factual or logical basis for believing that this country needs to move farther right.
So in my view you can pick an identity or you can make a reasonable assessment of things and vote to stay on course or for a change in direction.
There was no sensible argument that the courses set by either Clinton or Obama needed correcting. There simply are no measurables that support either and both changes have been epic clusterfucks brought to us by a minority of Americans.

I will agree the conservative party doesn’t need to move any further right, but you are insane if you don’t think the left doesn’t. Both have moved too far by trying to please the worst among both parties, and need to move toward the center. I maintain that neither reflects the majority of their supporters who are hopelessly left hanging with no viable options when they get to the polls, we/they vote against the other side because their poison is deemed more deadly.
But you are wrong about no logical arguments against policies/directions set by Clinton and Obama. No administration is wrong on everything, but if you agree with very little, or nothing at all, you are a blind sheep who doesn’t use your mind, or think independently of others.
The really odd thing is we have a point of sheer stupidity where Trump can say/favor a policy and use, almost verbatim, the exact same words that Clinton and Obama said as Presidents (Schumer as well) and he is viciously attacked and condemned and labeled the usual attack words. It is why no one takes the Left as anything by puppets, a thinking person would at least just attack the different positions. If we’re confronted with these things in national politics it’s not terribly surprising to find in at every level of our supposed “post-racial society” and college coaching is no exception. With midterms rapidly approaching, college football message boards are going to be a shit-show this season. The cable news folks are already amping the “left said/right said” shouting matches, and the PACs are already “firing up their base” by putting anything out there, no matter how stupid, that will get someone to click on a “sign this petition!” link. And that energy gets into some people, and then they have to go to a place like this and let someone have it.
My mother-in-law snarled at me last weekend over NFL protests, pretty much out of nowhere. I guess I’m the closest thing to a Democrat in her world, a guy who has politely but firmly told her I will not sit and watch cable news with her. She flips it to Hannity, I’m taking a walk.
My personal pledge: I’m going to be doing a lot this election cycle, but I will be coming here to escape that.

I’d call it opinion. Someone in the article said Saban is overrated, does that make them hate white people, I don’t think so, it makes them stupid in my opinion. Saying Taggart is overrated seems equally stupid since he has no real body of work to judge by. I think Jimbo is overrated but it has nothing to do with his race. Jimbo built his “reputation” as a coach by having Jameis on his team. He’s cashing in on that good fortune now. Kevin Sumlin got a raise and extension because he happened to be the coach at Texas A&M when Manzeil was there. Once Manzeil left, Sumlin was revealed to be a pretty poor coach and was fired. I don’t think Sumlin was fired because he was black but some would claim that. Bringing up Jimbo’s lack of head coaching experience before being hired at FSU is irrelevant to me, the same could be said of Kirby and the Georgia job and I think Kirby has done pretty well.
Since every statement in America now that is not glowing praise of any person of color is now shouted down as “RACISM”, real racism has become impossible to really expose, I don’t think racism has been normalized, I think it has been caricatured. Crying “RACISM” has become the equivalent of the boy crying “Wolf!”. Outside of the ultra PC corporate and university cultures, claims of racism have become largely ignored due to their overuse.

When I was a freshman at UGA in 1966 I actually saw the following with sober eyes one weekend night on the 6th floor of Oglethorpe (the first year it was open). A drunken boy bend over on all fours, pull his clothes to his knees and a friend insert a lit cigarette into the drunk boy’s asshole. Now, somehow that boy got that cig to puff just like he was smoking it normal-ish. Of course, everyone laughed for his 15 minuets of infamy then lost interest.
The point of that is to say the ass clown’s activity makes more sense than bringing up the topic of politics in a sports board, where most of us go to unite and not bicker.

Politics and sports have never been separate. Ever. In fact sports are often the largest platforms for political change. This was true when Adolf Hitler used the Berlin games of 1938 to advance the propaganda of Aryan supremacy and when Jackie Robinson stepped on the diamond for the Brooklyn Dodgers as the first black MLB player in April of 1947. It certainly isn’t any different today.
That said, it’s pretty easy to identify which posts on this blog are going to consist of political comments, and it’s pretty easy to just avoid reading them.

I’m probably going to regret chiming in here, but here goes…
I agree that at times it can seem like we’re regressing on the issue of racism, but I also believe that we’re sometimes too quick to assume racism (or some form of discrimination in general) as the cause for every perceived injustice when that may not be the case. Of course it’s possible that racism was a factor in the lists in the referenced article, but it’s impossible to say for sure and that actually works to the advantage of both sides. One side can drop an “I’m just sayin'” line like Hale’s, and the other side can say things like “well we don’t know who said what” or something along those lines and no one wins.

“Overrated” is a relative term. It doesn’t necessarily mean the overrated person is without any talent, or even that they aren’t pretty good at what they do. It just means they get credit for being better than the results they have produced justify.
If you could buy Franklin for what he was worth, and sell him for what he thought he was worth, you could buy an NBA franchise. Is he a good coach? Absolutely, a very good one. What’s his record against top 25 teams? Does that sound like a guy on the cusp of a NC? That seems to be his current reputation, which, frankly, seems a bit overrated to me.
Make of that whatever anyone likes. I’m sure the fact that he’s a smug asshole doesn’t factor into the rating process at all.

I’m really surprised Harbaugh wasn’t on the overrated list. Franklin may very well be full of shit, but that doesn’t mean he’s not a hell of a coach. Dabo is full of shit also and they are both winning big at a traditional football school. I also think Charlie Strong is a better coach than what we saw at Texas. I predict Kevin Summlin will build a solid program at Arizona, a place without the massive expectations and politics of A&M. Jimbo is definitely overrated and I think he will fade slowly there.
Some of these guys that are considered really good at actually coaching up players would struggle in the SEC or at schools like OU, Clemson, or Texas. Paul Chryst is mentioned in the story as a very good coach, but so was Bert when he was at Wisconsin. I don’t think anyone in the SEC would rush out to hire Chryst. Mark Dantonio is another example. I just don’t think he would be wildly successful at some of these football-obsessed schools.

Harbaugh is definitely showing as overrated given his time at Michigan. Honestly thought he’d do better, but he’s been pretty mediocre.

Agree about Harbaugh, he is still getting the benefit of his time at Stanford. Wonder how long Big Blue puts up with his lack of progress? He is a “Michigan man” so probably 2-3 years more if he doesn’t stomp off for another NFL gig. He is currently the 4th team in the Big 14 in year number 4 (?). This year he has a pretty good QB to go along with his best defense yet, but still rated behind Wisky, ohio, and State Penn…and may be 2nd in his own state. Is that still good enough for a hungry fan base? Would not be at many top programs I know of with what he has been given to work with.

The reasons I have for believing Obama was utterly unfit for office are many. From his attempt to destroy the domestic coal and gas industries, to his contempt for our police and military, his hatred for Israel, the only democracy in the middle east. And how did that Arab spring work out for everyone. Or Benghazi. Or creating the vacuum for Isis, and then being unable to get control of it even though they were just the jv team. Or maybe it was his weaponizing of the IRS to attack only right wing political groups. Maybe it was weaponizing the DOJ to go in and get convictions on racial shootings that were later proven false. Maybe it was funneling cash to Iran while undoing most all sanctions. Along with his disastrous N Korea policy, setting up the mess we’re dealing with now. Inflaming racial tensions to at least 70s levels. Yeah, that’s only a few of my reasons, if not showing stupidity, at the very least showing someone who isn’t smart enough to get decent advice. But here’s the real problem with us arguing. All these things I saw happen, you either don’t believe, or worse, you think they were good things. The distance between our beliefs in what makes a strong country and a good president have never been farther apart. There is literally nothing politically that we agree on and neither will sway the others opinion. I have formed my beliefs through many years, much study and much faith. At 18 at UGA I was as liberal as anyone could be, many years later I’m very conservative in my life and beliefs. That’s not going to change unless I’m convinced that my belief system is wrong. I believe the extraordinarily liberal politics of the left will eventually be the undoing of our country. The racist, sexist, classist, etc., politics of the left have divided us in a way that may be irreparable. I hope not, but I don’t see this ending well for anyone.

The only thing I am aware of is that Obama privately approached Mitch McConnell about the possibility of publicly rebuking Russia. McConnell indicated that he would politicize any such rebuke. Thus, no one knew about the Russian influence campaign until after the election, ignoramus.
