There are debacles, and then there’s Tennessee’s SEC record over the last decade.

This is astounding.

The Vols haven’t won the SEC East division since 2007, and challenged only once.

They’ve had one winning SEC record in the last 10 years and three conference records of 1-7 or worse.

During that time, they’ve had a winning record against just two SEC teams – Kentucky and Vanderbilt – but the Commodores have won four of the last six. That hasn’t happened since before Gen. Neyland was hired to run the UT program in 1926.

… Since 2008, the Vols are 24-56 in SEC play: 24-32 against East opponents, 2-22 against the West.

It’s hard to believe but UT has a losing record against South Carolina over the past decade and a losing record against every team in the West, except Mississippi State (1-1).

If Tennessee manages a winning conference record, does Jeremy Pruitt get a contract extension?

    He’d deserve a HOF induction.

Pruitt’s plan will be similar to CNS’s and CKS’s. 2018 will be a throwaway year in terms of record. He doesn’t and won’t care about that. Maybe even less than Kirby since he was taking over a team that had won 10 games in each of the past 2 years.

He’s going to try and change the identity of the team and convince recruits they can play now. Why go to UGA and Bama and ride pine when we can play you next fall?

I hope he falls on his ass but that will be the plan.

Hitting Georgia hard, was afraid of that. Their ’98 team had plenty of pretty damn good players from Georgia….would not have won it without them imo.

      • Different landscape that 95-98. He would deserve HOF status if he could pull Georgia players like Fulmer did back then. We are just a more attractive product now, hands down. Its just a matter of making sure we pick the right top players now and don’t overlook anyone that can sneak up and bite us.

          We can’t get them all.

The big difference is Alabama, Auburn, USC and Clemson are getting their share too. The irony is that Pruitt getting a few probably weakens our rivals more than us. We just need to get OUR 12-15 guys from in state every year and we’ll be fine. If the 10 we’d like to have gotten wind up at 6 or 7 schools, so what?

Of course it was different…and I do agree that we are a more attractive program now. We just need to continue recruiting the way we are now and be sure be are getting the top players as you say.

But there are enough players to field a couple of good teams in the state of Georgia..maybe more. It is of my opinion, that things cycle in this league…hoping they are not cycling back up (TN). My fear with Pruitt was/is that he would hit Georgia hard. Pretty sure Butch did not put a lot of emphasis on it. Hope they fall on their ass….check out the HS players from Georgia for this class, he is making a conscious effort now.

Part of his issue is that he hired Will Friend and Tracy Rocker to be his line coaches. Sending lazy recruiters after kids that are afraid of competition is not the way to build your lines if you want to win in the SEC.

I fully expect his defenses to look like ours did when he was DC. Underrated and undersized 3* DBs that fit his system and an athletic but undisciplined front that struggles against quality OLs. It is Rocker, Sherrer, and Pruitt joined with Terry Fair and Chris Rumph.

And yet still is 23-22-2 against Georgia (TN leads)…and more overall wins and better win percent (all-time). Hate those bastids, lived thru the 0 for 9 streak thru the 90’s in Nashville. It was brutal, made me hate them more than any…..still feel that way, but that game always scares me. Last year was sweet, love to think ass beatings like that continue… but I’m afraid they are building again.

They are exactly 25 all time wins ahead of us, IF you count the segregation era, which I really don’t. Since the SEC was integrated in 1970, in the 48 seasons since we are 8th nationally and they are 16th. We are now tied in SEC Championships with them, and come October the all time series will be tied once again as well. With the exception of that stretch in the 90’s when Georgia was down, Tennessee’s glory is pretty much all in the past, and is as faded and irrelevant as Army or Minnesota’s glory. In this century we are 5th and they are 40th, tied with…. drumroll…Boston College. I am sure Boston College is pretty embarrassed by that.

No extension, but he’ll likely get a statue on campus with a winning record this season.

Those numbers don’t match but other than that THIS is the best thing I read all day.

There’s something at UT that seemingly brings out the worst characteristics of players regardless of their talent. Or maybe UT somehow attracts and signs them. Nonetheless, many of them (Peyton excluded) behave like selfish brats interested in anything but a team agenda. For Pruitt to win against the competition he faces now he must change that culture….I think it has something to do with Knoxville.

And in their fans’ minds they are still one of the top jobs in college football, only they can’t seem to get folks interested.

I owe Butch Jones a world of gratitude. He exceeded above and beyond any hopes I had for TN to have a bad season. It just got better and better. The glory of it all! 41-0, no SEC conference wins, the Butch-isms, the fiasco HC search. It was wonderful and I will miss him! THE best season, ever for me to rejoice in all their losses and humiliations. No fruit sucks like the big orange and baby, did they ever! I ain’t worried about JP. He’s no Kirby in any shape, way or form.

Kirby is harvesting whatever’s left of the talent in TN. Took 5-star Mays in December. Snagged coaches Fanning & Hankton from Memphis & Vandy. And currently landing commitments from the limited talent available.

I originally thought Pruitt could do something with utk. But it looks like a much tougher job with every day that passes.

The state of Tennessee is 17th in population, ahead of Alabama and Louisiana, so I wouldn’t write ’em off just yet.
