On your way down

I’m still trying to wrap my head around the speed with which the perception of the Georgia-Florida rivalry has been turned on its head.  Take Spencer Hall as an example:

Georgia had seven five-star recruits in their 2018 class. SEVEN. It’s not happening against them for a while, and by “it” I mean “competing with them, much less beating them.” They’ve been working smart and hard. Working smart and hard when the competition is working dumb and not-much equals some very, very bad things over time for the competition.

I haven’t heard Gator pity like that in thirty-five or so years.  It’s sad enough I almost feel guilty pointing out that Todd Grantham is the defensive coordinator.  Almost.

If schadenfreude is wrong, I don’t want to be right. Spencer Hall is a demented, hilarious genius, and if he’s given up already, imagine the wailing and rending of Tenow and Wuerrfel jerseys among the wife beater./jean short /puka shell necklace class of Gators as they slowly realize what is happening.

“A defense coached by a sentient mound of Underwood Deviled Ham spread.” One if the great quotes I’ve ever read.

Hiring Grantham was definitely “working dumb.”

Hiring Mullen was downright idiotic. Unless, of course, their plan is too pick up 3 stars who have been shunned by the big schools and JUCO kids.

I hope they believe that a 3 Star who loves Florida is worth more than a 5-Star. I really do.

Mullen did a good job at MSU, and he has prior UF connections, so his hire wasn’t a total surprise, and probably not the worst hire they could have made. But I see things happening that seem like CMR coming to us, but without Donnan’s players. If he can hang in there, Mullen will eventually get them back to a place where they might compete against most of the rest of the division, but not really sniff a division title very often.

I have no explanation for Grantham. Why are ADs willing to pay him so much? The clip in another spot on this blog make it sooo clear that his players have no clue what to do. I could say that it is because his D is so complex that ti takes time to learn and they will be better by the end of the season, but then I realize that Mel Tucker’s D is also pretty complicated – Danielson did a good job explaining it to me this last game – but the difference is our guys know their assignments. We must practice them! I think for Grantham to be really successful, he needs to coach on a team with a great offense – like UGA and Louisville – to cover over his goofiness. That is not going to be UF for the next year or so.

Because they hired a Head Coach that wants to hire Grantham as his DC. Football coaches don’t care about silly memes like “Towel Boy”, “3rd and Grantham”, or “Waving Hands”. Despite his flaws, he is a good DC and other coaches know it. It is kind of like how so many fans here were calling for Chaney and Pittman to be fired after the 2016 season for a multitude of meme reasons like “Chaney is fat”, “Chubb blocking for iMac against Vandy”, or “The line didn’t get any better during the season” (which is completely wrong BTW). How many want Pittman fired now? Fan is derived from the word fanatic for a reason.

I thought I was Mrs. McGarity. Apparently I’m a polygynist despite the fact that I’m a middle-aged man. I know you FELL like you are being clever with a comment like that, but you really aren’t.

Sorry, but I don’t join in with everyone else when they decide to shit on people they don’t know for reasons that don’t actually make sense. I will actually defend people when they are unfairly attacked. If you check over on cfbstats.com, you will notice that Grantham regularly fields a Top 25 defense. I’m not sure what other metric you would want to use to determine if a DC is good or not.

No, Mrs. Grantham is right. Todd is not a bad DC, he’s just misunderstood. That’s why those bigger boys on the field are always looking over at him like they have no idea what he’s talking about. It’s not Todd’s fault they aren’t smart enough to understand the special playbook. If they would try harder then he could help them tackle the other boys and Todd wouldn’t have gotten that awful nickname “3rd”.
Mrs. Grantham I apologize from the bottom of my heart for offending you. I had no idea you were still following the blog but that is no excuse, we should all treat others as we wish to be treated and I wouldn’t want someone making fun of me for something I had no control over, like capitalizing an entire misspelling while lecturing someone on a football blog. When you see Todd tell him I’m very sorry.
                  Sincerely,
                  Got

  5. I still have a salty taste in my mouth after licking those Gator tears. Just lovely. As a bulldog coming to age in the 90’s, this is still an adjustment for me that takes time. I will need to see at least 4 more Gator beatdowns before I am comfortable. Can we make that happen Kirby? Thanks!

BTW, is it about time to that Richt for bringing Grantham to the SEC? Because I think it is.

Did anybody see Grantham’s patented 12 men on the field after a time-out this weekend? The UK conversion on 3rd and 17? The fact that UK started out 8 for 9 on third downs? The good times are just getting started.

That 12 men out of a timeout when you’re trying to get a three and out to have a chance at an improbable comeback is just quality coaching. It ended up probably being the difference between 29 seconds from their six and a minute 40 from their 30.

Chaney needs to incorporate all 6 of our TOs in Jax as part of the game plan – whenever we need a vital lift or first down.

Heck, I’m thinking CTGs antics would make a good drinking game.

I honestly thought my handle here and elsewhere would have run its course by now. After all, Grantham left Athens, what, more than 5 years ago? Instead its aging like a fine wine, and I personally love the work ole’ Todd has done thus far in Gainesville.

There isn’t much probability here for the Gators, whose last five-star signee came on in 2015 — a year when Will Muschamp brought in his last haul of recruits

Wait…. is that true? Holy crap.

Their recruiting truly has been crap (by UF standards) the last few years. Recruits were turned off my McElwain’s weird personality (and McElwain didn’t exactly go out of his way to recruit either), and thus far Mullen has shown a penchant for spending his free time up at Lake Oconee than out on the recruiting trail.

Gators bout the fourth best team in Florida and none of them very good. And about the state of Tennessee, just about as good as gets right now.

No sympathy for this group though. I hope Kirby puts his foot on their throat for at least the next 5 years.

South Carolina got an education next week. I think the only way the East is truly going to understand is to systematically take them apart this year just like last. Then that will be that…

At the rate they are playing, it is looking as if the FSU-Florida showdown at season end will be pushed over to be televised by the Home & Garden channel. Will Beth Mowins still do the call or maybe Chip & Joanna Gaines?
That way, the regular networks can show a better game, like California Lutheran vs Colorado School of Mines

My favorite detail was that Kentucky didn’t run a single Red Zone play! UK’s shortest scoring play was for 29 yards and they never entered inside the Gator 20. No wonder Grantham was trying to use 12 players out of the timeout.

Hogtown will not heed to Thisbe train of thought. FU will live in denial for a while. The vawls still don’t know they suk. Here’s to hoping we do to the orange infected, what they did to us during the 90s and part of the 00s. And hoping we continue the trend against “identity crisis” cow college.

    The New Promise:

I just want to say one thing.

To the fans and everybody in Gator Nation, I’m sorry, extremely sorry.

I promise you one thing, a lot of bad will continue to come out of this.

You will never see any coach in the entire country coach as poorly as I will coach the rest of the season, and you will never see someone recruit the thugs as hard as I will the rest of the season, and you will never see a team play worse than we will the rest of the season.

    Dan Mullen.

I think UF should have had more patience with Boom. To bad. And now Boom is in a place where no matter how hard he works, his team will always be middle the pack. I see UT and UF going through a few more coaches or coordinators before they settle. They want to win now and it’s just not going to happen. They may wonder through that wilderness like Bama before turning things around.

I had a (I hesitate to use the word) friend (maybe colleague) who was a Gator. The week before the Cocktail Party when Spurrier was coaching she would usually ask me “By how much do you think we’ll beat you this year?” She’s retired and I don’t see her now. I wouldn’t be so unkind to return the favor but I would certainly do a lot of smiling around her this year if I had the chance.

I’d love it if we went on some kind of streak (like the 70s and 80s for example) so it got to where the younger alums and students don’t look at beating the gators as any big deal, because it happens every year.

Just talked to a gator fan whose sons went there. He said his sons are through for the year. This place (Ocala) is on a death watch. If The Fighting Bobo’s beat them there will be massive exploding heads. Right now like Spence said they have sub-par players at all positions and not much depth to go with it. I haven’t been to Jax since the early 2000’s but I think it’s going to end up an 80/20 Dawg crowd this year.
