This is something I should make into a recurring topic at the Playpen.
I have a reader traveling to the Missouri game for the first time who emailed me asking for recommendations for places to see, eat, drink, etc.
I’ve never been, but I know some of you have, so please take a minute and provide some suggestions for the newbie Dawg traveler to Columbia.

Yep. Like Allen’s, keep the order simple: cheeseburger, chips, a cold Stag beer, and a billiard table. Chips are locally made and taste like golden flake. Burgers are cooked at the bar. Bathroom is as nasty as Allen’s was. As the sign reminds you – don’t piss on the floor.
Don’t order the pork loin sandwich, it’s also nasty. TVs are tiny so don’t go there expecting to focus on the A&M game. But for a burger and a beer, it’s convenient right downtown. Old school in every way.

I would say find the Tiger Tran or whatever it’s called. We went in 2012. Parked downtown, it was free (!) on game day at the time. For like $5 they drive u all around to the hotspots (much like a bar crawl – get on & off as u like) and then to & from the game, just hop off at the location closest to your car. But of course that was some time ago & I know uber and all that, but as I recall it was super cheap & super convenient & great spots downtown!

Some ideas:
Downtown is just over a mile walk from the stadium through campus..
Blue Note on Friday night – Country artist Cody Jinks – Venue will remind you of the Georgia Theatre.
New Shakespeare’s Pizza location downtown is much larger than the old one – find a table in the back. Very good thin crust. Also two other locations in town if you want to avoid the crowds.
Downtown has no shortage of frozen drink places, if you are into that.
Go to Sparky’s for dessert (ice cream) next to the head shop. Look for the concrete bulldog and his water dish on the sidewalk.
For hanging out outdoors, go to Flat Branch Brewing on the edge of downtown for a laid back evening, or Harpo’s roof for an Allgood’s type of experience.

The three day FBI investigation into Anita Hill’s allegations was totally a delay tactic.

Polygraphs are meaningless. That’s why they’re inadmissible in court.
And there is a difference between a woman keeping an alleged assault secret for decades before going to the press and politicians, and a woman telling her friends and family about an assault, but not going to the police and press because the rapist was a powerful politician.

Points as good as usual. A few judges took a vote. And the dissenting judge specifically cited the lack of scientific consensus that polygraphs were effective. But truth is whatever an election decides it is, right junior? Unless the election result is something you disagree with, in which case it’s not fair. That about sums up your worldview.

Clinton ordered a number of missile strikes against Iraq. I can think of the time that was “retaliation for an alleged assassination attempt on Bush 43. The attack on the “chemical weapons factory” that ended up being an aspirin factory, and the “wag the dog” incident right when the Monica Lewinsky scandal broke. Each of these strikes had many innocent civilian deaths. There was also the economic sanctions he ordered against Iraq that were estimated to kill almost 500k Iraqi children, and Madeleine Albright said it was worth it without disputing the figures.
The last president that you could possibly make the claim wasn’t a mass murderer was Jimmy Carter. There is a reason that good people don’t want to be President. It puts people into horrible lose-lose situations where they end up killing a bunch of people even if that was the least bad option.

Well, it varies. Some states have statutes of limitations except in cases where DNA evidence is found. Some states have none at all. Some states have varying limitations based on the ages of the accuser and/or accused. But that’s too many variables to expect you to think about. That’s why I simply say, “Not exactly.” Don’t worry about it.
In any case, having an accuser come forward decades after something may have happened without any evidence is exactly why statutes of limitations exist. The only possible resolution of the case is a he-said, she said. Kavanaugh’s friend denies it happened, so you have two “hes” denying the “she” account. But that’s about it. No DNA. No video. No corroborating evidence. The only thing that’s pertinent here is that Ford is a Democrat and Kavanaugh is being appointed by a Republican. That’s why people like you care.

I would. The “these things don’t impact him at all” is a mirage. The only reason it hasn’t “hurt him” is because Republicans on the Hill have completely abdicated their responsibilities to act as a check on the Executive branch and are acting as full time protection for Trump now against criminal prosecution. But that dereliction of duty is going to cost them. We’ve already started to see it in multiple special elections. The majority of his campaign leadership have now made deals with the special counsel to cooperate with the investigation for lighter sentencing. The midterms are going to eliminate the GOP majority in the House and may have an outside shot of flipping the Senate as well. When the Mueller investigation concludes, there will be nothing left for Republicans to protect.
Thing is, the GOP knows they’re about to lose it all. All they’re doing now is racing against the clock to stack the courts and pass tax breaks to their wealthy donors before it happens.

Assuming that everyone who voted for Trump is either stupid or a monster is as bad as judging an entire group based on skin color. I thought Progressives were better than that. If you treat everyone who votes Republican as a 2D racist, misogynistic Nazi regardless of who they are, then don’t be surprised when they tune out your concerns over someone like Trump who really is a bad dude, or embrace the guy because they’re tired of being stereotyped.
There’s a way to call people out, and fight if necessary, without forgetting that they are humans, just like you, who deserve a basic level of respect. There are people I deeply respect who voted for Trump. I think they made a horrible decision and I am very disappointed in them, but that’s not the end-all-be-all of who they are.

I’m curious how many other people here follow Miami football. I’d love to see Mark Richt make whatever changes necessary to take his coaching to the next level, but I doubt it will ever happen. Watching their late-season stumbles last year and the opener against LSU this year, all I could think was “that’s what a typical Mark-Richt-coached team looks like.”
In addition to all of the tangible results, Kirby seems to have drastically changed the mental makeup of the UGA players compared to the previous regime.

At some point in the future I might stop being shocked when we build a lead on a team we are supposed to beat, then maintain and grow the lead and end up winning comfortably with the 3rd team in for the 4th quarter. I think the culture shift amongst the players has occurred much quicker than among the fanbase. This may be the first year I didn’t look at the schedule and seriously wonder who we would crap the bed against.

I like Mark Richt and think he is a good coach and a good guy. That said he never fields a complete team. There is always something missing and a lot of that had to do (at UGA at least) with not using all available scholarships. He also had that maddening habit of making end of game decisions in close games that changed a win to a loss and having his team not show up ready to play, often in the biggest games. Sooner or later he’s going to get runnofft from Miami, too. People on this blog often insult Jim Donnan but Donnan’s W-L percentage for his last four seasons (give him a year to get the Goof out of ’em) is almost exactly the same as Mark Richt’s. I’m hoping Kirby Smart is the real deal (he certainly looks it) and that he stays in Athens for 25 or more years.

I don’t follow Miami anymore than any other nonSEC. Further I was pulling for the SEC in their opener against LSU. I wish no ill will on the guy but my stance on my Miami has not changed since he arrived.

Yeah, I’ve always been a big Mark Richt fan, but I told my wife watching the LSU game to open the season that’s why he was R-U-N-N-O-F-T.
And yeah, Mayor, you’re right. We always had a hole on the team somewhere. This is the first year I can remember in a long time that I feel like we have depth literally everywhere. It’s a great feeling.

Remember all the hand wringing around here when we finally got around to making the change? The sugar bowl against West Virginia then stomping the logo against vandy in 2007 were canaries in the Cole mine. Fortunately we finally made a change nearly a decade later!
I was all over the Kirby bandwagon. I certainly had my concerns in 2016. Even after last year as this preseason approached, there was a voice in the back of my mind that wondered if the leaders in 2017 were responsible for the magic. Then I went to South Carolina and no longer have any lingering doubt that Kirby is building our program into a sustained monster that might make Alabama’s run the last ten years look routine
Alabama will be tough to beat this year, but It’s only a matter of time before we overtake them and Kirby wasn’t kidding in his post championship game comments when he said ‘we’re not going anywhere’

We won’t overtake Alabama until Nick Saban leaves. Kirby can’t beat him. None of his former assistants have. We just have to keep Kirby around until after Saban leaves. Then, hopefully, they’ll return to 1993-2007 form.

I’m not so sure. Georgia was a hotbed if Saban recruiting. Kirby has already made considerable inroads decreasing that easy stream of athletes. If that dries up he may be beatable. At least at times.

If they don’t fuck us on the blocked kick, we beat them last year. Tua makes it harder but I say we can beat them straight up.

But they did. And we didn’t. And we can’t. Until Saban leaves. As it stands, we were no different last year than 2002. Same record in conference. Same conference championship. Same ranking going into the bowls.

Hated “Da U” and generally still do on principle, but I would like to see Richt have success. Comparing what’s happening down there to what Kirby has going on here is foolish though…different conferences, challenges, money, recruiting bases, etc. Despite what some think, it’s OK to see if CMR can do well and not be critical of his past here.

I don’t cheer for Miami, but I like Richt. But comparisons to he and Kirby aren’t really fair because Kirby came into a program that won 10 games and had a top-5 recruiting class ready to sign. He did a good job keeping the recruiting class together, which is tough after a coaching change. Then he kicked things up a notch.
Richt went to a Miami program that was a mess. He had to start at ground level and it will take longer to build. I really thought that 2015 Richt had learned his lessons and was taking steps to improve his coaching. Maybe he did. It might be too early to tell. But games like the LSU loss leave me wondering.

Richt had a decade and a half to “tak[e] steps to improve his coaching” at UGA. He didn’t. Early on, with Donnan’s recruits and a weaker conference, he did really well. Then he didn’t. It’s amazing how many fans worship him for making tens of millions of dollars to take Georgia from relative mediocrity to above average.
Discipline problems, poor roster management, persistently bad special teams, decent but not elite recruiting, always a few steps behind the cutting edge, hiring and retaining below average assistant coaches, poor in-game coaching, lax strength and conditioning … etc.
Richt is who we thought he was. He takes a humiliating beating once or twice a season, drops a brainfart game once or twice a season, and is basically above average across the board.
Maybe someday you’ll get closure on that.

Sorry for triggering you. But decent coaches don’t win 75% of their games. Excellent coaches do. Yes, he had failures. Roster management was a big one. But his last UGA recruiting classes looked like he was addressing that.
Accepting the Georgia Way was another. Although it’s hard to fault a man for doing what his bosses tell him to. Fortunately, Kirby hasn’t had to deal with the same limitations Richt did. I don’t know whether that’s Kirby’s doing, Jimmy Sexton’s, or the boosters forcing McGarity’s hand. Probably a combination of all three. But Kirby isn’t handcuffed like Richt was and he’s making the best of it. Has Richt forced the Miami administration to support the football program the way an elite program should? Has he had to? I don’t know.
I’m very happy with Kirby so far in Athens. But I recognize that Richt was a good coach who could have easily won a national championship or two during his tenure. I wish him the best. I would like to see Miami supplant Clemson as the best team in the ACC.

Funny, I’d like Duke or UNC or UVA to supplant Clemson and FSU. Miami is another Bama from an earlier era. I like CMR as a guy but I say of Miami let ’em rot CMR or no CMR.

CMR was POed because the Wisky QB completed a long pass the play before the bumping of the ref that got Wisky down to the Miami side of the field. There was a clear but uncalled holding by the Wisky right OT on the Miami DE (where the DE should have had a sack) that allowed the completion. So instead of 4th and forever and a punt Wisky is down near the goal line. All of us would have been pissed too if that happened to UGA.

Has anyone had issues listening in to the UGA games through the Georgia Bulldogs Android app? I’ve tried catching the pre-game and game announcements the past three weeks and just keep getting elevator music. Is my timing really that great that I always catch them on commercial breaks, or have they discontinued broadcasting over the app?

I haven’t been able to get audio through the UGA website this year. I would advise downloading the Tune In Radio app. The UGA page has the game audio and it works.
