The most 2016 game of 2018 (I hope)

The half-full part of the glass is that they brought their C-game on the road, never trailed and beat a conference opponent by two touchdowns.

I’m sure Kirby will have much to say about the half-empty part.

This team has a way to go before becoming a National Championship contender.

Apparently our strength and conditioning if not up to par. The football seems to be too heavy for them to tote all the way across the goal line. Maybe they can request a lighter ball so they don’t get worn out before they cross the line convincingly.

Disagree with that. Alabama clearly looks like the best team in the country, but we’re right there in the next group with Clemson and Ohio State. Unless you believe Bama is completely invincible and no one has any chance of beating them, I think it’s hyperbolic to say the Dawgs aren’t a contender.

We have flaws, sure. But our shakiest performance of the year thus far was still good enough for a 14-point road win over an undefeated team with an NFL quarterback. It’s not like we needed overtime to beat Army at home like another top-5 team did this weekend.

Well, I did see the rarest play in CFB after our game.

    Holding against Alabama.

Oh, and today something positive about our game, I’ll just say that Mizzou did a great job stopping Mizzou.

My retort is we did the same. There were phantom calls against us and phantom calls that should have been called on them. Why does that matter? Those calls kept their drives alive. We fed this by making real boneheaded errors prior to these.
Arguably the strangest game I have seen in some time.

With 24 hours hindsight, I’m comparing this to our win over Sackerlina last year. 14 point win over a supposed inferior opponent that felt strangely unsatisfying. Given how the rest of yesterday played out, that’s a small thing to be worried about.

A very poorly prepared team. Thank goodness we have far more superior athletes to allow us to get away that a game like this.

Coaches & players got away w/ one today.

I’m confident we’ll be fine on offense. On defense, we’re good enough to stop 90% of the teams in CFB but the elite teams will run it down our throats and I don’t think we can stop it. Auburn and probably Bama in the SECC will both kill us in the trenches. We really miss Roquan, Atkins, Carter, Thompson.

People can sleep on Mizzou, but they have a very good OL, probably the best we will see before the SECCG. I’m not kidding.

Bad up front on both sides and play calling is once again a prime suspect. We lose three this year including the SECCG. Do yourselves a favor and don’t watch Bama. That way you can keep telling yourself we’re a good team. I do think next year will be more like last year but we got some growing up to do both physically and mentally to run with the big dogs.

We are soft in the middle of the defense. I think we will end up between 10-2 and 12-0, get beat badly by Bama in Atlanta and hopefully go to the Sugar Bowl, win it and get ready to chop wood in 2019 when we should be better. That many of us will be disappointed in such an outcome speaks volumes about how far this program has come.

Listen, dude, you want to be satisfied with “We Won!”, that’s fine. The rest of us “whiners” know that if we play like we did today, we will face competition later in the season where the outcome won’t be “We Won!” We want to improve and see the kind of effort and coaching that’s going to allow us to say “We Won!” after all of them. We didn’t get that today, plain and simple. If you can’t see it, stay around here and you might learn something.

And if you think we’re going to be just fine if we continue to perform like we did today, you can find diddly shit in the mirror.

Who has a better offense on our schedule the rest of the year?

We dominated on offense again today, running and passing. Who has a defense on our schedule capable of slowing it down?

Clean up the dumb penalties and a couple of sloppy plays and we are cruising to Atlanta.

Not scoring an offensive TD in the first half is absolutely not dominating. We also had first and goal and got nothing. Chaney had a terrible day. Fromm was off and our O-Line got stuffed on multiple short yardage plays.

I think Mizzou runs the table the rest of the way except for the Bama game. They are a good team if they cleanup their special teams and dropped passes, they can score fast.

That said, we played like horseshit and still beat them. I’m surprised with our rushing D though. That has to get better.

  20. Some of what I saw today hearkened back to the Richt days. Absurd play calling at times. Weak run defense. And the hot dogging as you score by dropping the ball at an inopportune moment. That has got to stop. Period. If I am Kirby, I get that player and make him run 15 consecutive 100 yard sprints and hand the ball to a coach, a practice ref, or even drop it in a trash can over the end line. That kind of immaturity has got to stop. We got exposed. National championship teams don’t allow a good opponent to stay in it past the first half. They dominate. We didn’t. Reality check.

What I learned today…and some comments.
    GA vs Mizzu
-I discounted some concerns from some on this blog about our run-stop and pass-pressure defense. I hear you now. We need to give those two areas more focus.
-Mizzu was more physical than I expected and their DL & run-offense was better than I thought.
-Getting stopped on 4th and one was embarrassing. At the time I thought we should have ran Holyfield on that play…but he got stuffed on a 3rd and 4 later, so.
-I’m glad we got the early turnovers because we needed them to win.
-I’m betting that Kirby has threatened the next player that drops the ball early as they cross the goal line will receive heavy punishment.
    -I hope this was a ‘let-down-trap-type-game’.
-We are STILL a great team that warrants playoff expectations.
    Bama
-Someone (I forget who) on this blog, had what I thought was too high a praise for Tua (Bama QB). After watching him today, I stand corrected. That kid is special.
-We are not ready for Bama…yet but we have time to get ready. There is much football yet to play.
    -Go Dawgs!!

I agree. I still think we’re better than anyone on our schedule and today’s game could be that wake-up call we needed. The coaching staff has areas to focus on and improve. We’ll see better defenses but Mizzu probably has the best offense we’ll face so that’s good for our D.

UK looked good against MsSt. The cats have a D. They may challenge SC for that second spot in the SEC East.

    • Would shut down the run by default but it didn’t. The offensive philosophy was run clock and run the damn ball. Sloppy play and boneheaded mistakes prevented the successful execution of both. Stupid penalties aside and we could be looking at 50-22 or 56-21 easily and we are celebrating this a little different.

We dont have a Mt. Cody for this 3-4 scheme. That’s our most glaring problem and all else falls at the hands of that. Any decent 3-4 defense has been anchored by a solid beast of a nose and we ain’t got it. Our LBs and DBs are working extra hard imho.

I get the angst. I saw everything mentioned above and agree with most of it. I was screaming at the TV as well, but realized also how far we’ve come in a short time. There was a time, not that long ago, the Dawgs going on the road for a conference game and winning by 2 TDS would result in dancing in the streets! So, now we have a “let down” game, but that sure beats the inexplicable “face plants” we’d grown accustomed to…Yes, today wasn’t pretty- exposed shortcomings in playing and coaching, but I have faith in this staff and these incredibly talented athletes to improve every week. Get through LSU, keep improving and by December Alabama will face a team unlike any they have experienced all season. Our future is bright! Go Dawgs!

Ok, after looking at the CFB scoreboard, today seems to be “one of those days”. Lots of ranked teams went down to nobodies. Oklahoma had to go to overtime to beat Army. We survived so maybe its not so bad. Maybe it was just the fact that they were playing football at 11:00 AM CST and still had not woken up good. Even the refs seemed to have a bad day (they sucked for both teams). Maybe it is best to just go to bed and sleep this one off.

I doubt many here will remember in 2006 when Florida had to block a last-second chip-shot field goal to beat an unranked South Carolina team 17-16…at home. They then went on to win the SEC and the national title. The point is…every great team has at least one game during the year where they had to gut it out to win. Hopefully, this was our “C- game but still won” game.

You can go through nearly any championship team’s resume and find some game they barely won or lost when they were better than the other team. Miami in 2001 had to get a turnover with BC driving for a go ahead touchdown. Ohio State had to rally to beat like seven teams in 2002. LSU lost badly to Florida at home and had to hold on against Ole Miss (granted, it was a good Ole Miss team) in 2003. USC had to rally to beat 4-7 Stanford in 2004. Texas…didn’t really struggle with anyone in 2005 but A&M, which is a rivalry game and not really pertinent to this argument. LSU lost twice to not so great teams in 2007. Florida lost to Ole Miss in 2008. Alabama had to block a field goal to beat Tennessee in 2009. Auburn struggled to get past multiple teams in 2010. I’m tired of looking up details, but you get the point.

I want to also note that today doesn’t qualify as a particularly bad or lucky win. It was never a one possession game again after the blocked punt. None of that means that Georgia’s winning the national title game this year, but today hardly rules out the possibility.

      True Tennessee story:

I’m driving north on I-75 maybe an hour or so past Knoxville. Big wreck on the interstate so to avoid the resulting traffic I navigate into and through Tennessee proper and stop for gas.

Some dude in his mid-20’s with what I assume is his wife and young daughter pull up. He’s filling up when someone he knows pulls in behind to do the same and so they begin conversing.

From inside the dude’s car the wife starts to say something. Not sure what but seemed innocuous enough. Dude’s response is: SHUT UP BITCH!!!!! as loudly as you can imagine. It was simultaneously the most funny and entirely unfunny thing I’ve ever been witness to.

So your fictional narrative may actually be spot on.
