“Just clean it up. That’s it. Just clean it up.”

After dropping the ball somewhere in the vicinity of Missouri’s goal line, J.J. Holloman sounds like a man who’s had his come to Jesus meeting and walked away convinced.

Holloman already has a plan the next time he’s nearing the end zone: “I’m tucking it. I’m tucking it. I’m not dropping it. I’m holding it the whole time.”

Good on him.  Now we’ve just got to worry about the next Dawg who wants to look cool at the end of a big play.

How about this. As a rule, when you cross the goal line, you must hand the ball to the referee before celebrating with your team mates. That does three things.

It shows respect to the Zebra, and gives you a little pause before letting lose and obviously insures the ball crosses the plain.

Yes, how could anyone think dropping the ball is cool. I mean, do you like to be called stupid on national TV by millions? Sometimes, it can last a very long time before that isn’t your primary calling card to those who remember you.

To be clear, I didn’t think it was out at the goalline but it wasn’t because he was thinking at all. I hate it for him, he he is finally getting his shot, and may be one of our Top 4 guys, and then pulls this silliness. He will get an opportunity to redeem himself. I doubt he thinks it is cool now.

    • Simple and eloquent. Why should this be hard for any UGA player to grasp and for Kirby to enforce? You don’t do this and you are held out the next game or quarter or something. 2×4 to the head, and all that……sometimes they are knuckleheads and you have to deal with them in simple terms.

Joe Moorhead has a rule like that in place at Mississippi State. The rule is that when you score you 1. Hand the football to the ref, 2. Enjoy the moment with your teammates, and 3. Come have some fun with me. They have elaborate planned td celebrations with him that occur off the field.

I really like this policy. It focuses on ball security, avoiding penalties, staying to the good side of the refs, and reinforces the idea that the coaches are in control.

‘Cool’ is when the ref throws his arms straight up without a moment’s hesitation.

Total dick move by Holloman. I said the same about Baker against SC, he was a total dick. I thought Kirby was going to fix that. There is an easy solution : Don’t be a dick.

Gurkha’s delivery may not be statesman like but he’s basically right. J.J. Knew better after baker did it against SC if he didn’t know it before and he decided to do it anyway. Yes he’s young, and yes we all do stupid things, and we did more of them when we were that age. But it is selfish and stupid and honestly it was kind of a dick move when you look at it in that light. Saying so doesn’t mean you hate him or that you’re a horrible person. Also, maybe Gurkha just had a bad day. I don’t get why his description of the play was a big deal. And Chili, I don’t know who told you that you are the bouncer around here but a little bit of you goes a long way when it comes to stuff like this little exchange. Act like a turd in the playpen where none of the rest of us have to smell.it.

You’re pretty much correct on all points, Mike. I guess using the word “dick” triggers some people somehow. In the future I will use the word “knucklehead” when discussing situations like this. I certainly don’t hate either of the players involved. They’re great players who I enjoy watching. Doug’s post is a good example of someone who didn’t think about what is going on. Conley didn’t make a mistake, he thought the ball was thrown to him. He did the best he could. The same can’t be said about Holloman and Baker’s plays. I actually feel sorry for Chili, he has serious emotional problems. It’s just when someone shoves you, it’s hard not to shove back. Anyway, thanks for the post.

No problem, man. I totally get the being shoved/shoving back thing. I try not to get into that on the internet because there is no way to win. IT just escalates and whoever is the most determined to get the last word will get it. The thing is, Chilli is probably alright in normal life (versus internet world) and we would probably both like him. But to me, this place is so much more enjoyable since the instituting of the playpen. The need some people have to turn every single disagreement or even suspicion of disagreement into a political argument or a “oh you’re one of those guys…” arguments can only be met there now. I guess. I’ve stayed away from there. But I do know the blog in general isn’t nearly as hostile and pissy as it was before. That was my main beef with Chilli here was that it seemed like he wanted to take us there anyway. Oh well. Tomorrow will be better, dude. Go Dawgs.

Officials still made the right call. Don’t understand why there seemed to be so much controversy. To me, his foot clearly crossed the goal line before he dropped it. With all of that said…I understand why Kirby was upset, just hold on to the ball and maybe hand it to the ref as Athens said…

Carry the ball to the sideline. Hand it to the official. Run out the back of the end zone with it. Kneel with it in the middle of the end zone lettering. Cradle it like a baby. Do anything but drop it in the field of play. We are stupid lucky that Holloman’s showboating was not a 14 point swing the wrong way.

These guys’ ambition is to possess the ball in the end zone. Why do they try to do that for the smallest possible amount of time? It simply does not compute for me at all.

I respect that viewpoint, but I also see a signal of something else: last year’s team showed a lot of discipline, and this year’s team seems younger and less disciplined. I don’t really care about somebody celebrating, but that has to wait until the job is done. Score the touchdown first. That’s discipline, and I worry that a lack of discipline in this aspect of the game will appear elsewhere as well: keeping assignments, etc. Its supposed to be fun, but being successful requires an incredible level of focus.

KIrby should have had Holliman taken to the side at practice, lined him up on the 40, had someone throw him the ball 50 times in a row and make him run it full speed through the back of the end zone to “teach” him how to properly handle the ball on a td.

    • Exactly – with the entire team watching. I know these players are young men, barely not kids, but the expectations have been high on and for them since HS. And to play in the top conference in the country, its not like they have never heard lectures and coaching about responsibility and maturity and focus. They are a different breed of athlete with a higher sense of accomplishment. Act like it, especially with something as fundamental as handling the ball correctly. You may now all label me as ‘curmudgeon’. Peace.

This is how Tennessee players respond after scoring…and this is one of the reasons Butch Jones is a negative footnote in Tennessee coaching history. It’s a long way from dropping the ball a foot into the end zone and this little shit-show but discipline is called for and I’m sure CKS has already addressed it for the last time with conventional means. He’ll go nuclear on the next one.

There is a large contingent of fans (not in any way unique to UGA) who really get their rocks off from watching middle aged men discipline teenagers (or, barring that, at least hearing that a middle aged man is properly disciplining a young man). It makes me uncomfortable…
