Housekeeping note of note

I am heading out today for a little vacay time in scenic Monterey, California.  I’ll be missing my first home game in a while, but I don’t expect my presence Saturday will be needed in order to pull the Dawgs through.

I’m pretty sure I’ll be able to watch the game at Laguna Seca, so there’s that.  But keep in mind that posting will be irregular for the next few days, given my busy social calendar (hah!) and the time difference on the West Coast.

In other words, while I’m gone, behave, you scamps.

I visited the west coast (Vancouver Wa) last year and the weird thing was watching college football at 9am on Saturday.

I actually really liked watching college football when I was living out West. You get up Saturday morning and watch the early game while you’re having coffee and breakfast. Watch the big game of the day at 12:30 PT and then you can still go do something with your afternoon (and there’s plenty to do out there).

Well, I can get tickets from Hong Kong for about $800. I don’t supposed you’d want to donate your seats on the 35 yard line to my effort.

My wife and I were in San Francisco maybe ten or twelve years ago. We went looking for a place to watch the game Saturday morning. That was an adventure. I’m not positive most of the folks there knew colleges actually played football. They did have televisions in their bars. They just didn’t seem to be so sure what to do with them.

Rennsport should be amazing this weekend. I went to the last one and it was unreal. There’s a beer tent at the corkscrew. Just sayin’.
    Enjoy!

sigh you’re making me daydream, Senator. Used to make the short trek to Cali when I was living in Nevada. Love it out there. Considering making a work move to the bay area in the next couple of years.

The Monterey Aquarium is one of the best if you’re into that stuff. The drive down highway 1 to Big Sur is great. You can stop in at Napenthe (https://www.nepenthe.com) for food or drinks with incredible views. Orson Wells and other luminaries dined here. If you were there for a longer period and like natural areas, hiking, & unique geology, I’d highly recommend Pinnacles National Park (https://www.nps.gov/pinn/index.htm). Avoid Fisherman’s Wharf like the plague, IMO. Too touristy. My sister was an attorney in San Francisco for many years. I think she steered me to the Monterey Fish House for dinner which was recommended by her local clients. It was a bit out of the way (not walkable), but had great, fresh seafood.

Was in northern CA last week and thought I would miss the Mizzou game. However, I managed to get to the Sacramento airport early enough to catch most of it, drinking beer and eating pizza for breakfast while yelling at the TV at 9 in the morning. Yeah, I may have stood out a little.

Surfing at Half-Moon Bay! That’ll get your juices flowing. My oldest son, born in Athens, lives in Santa Cruz and works in Silicon Valley. His wife is a buyer for Cameron Marks Boutique and they have some pretty interesting “things” that may interest your wife and daughters (if they are going with you).

Carry beaucoup bucks. When staying at the Embarcadero, try Harry’s Bar, just around the corner and a couple of blocks(taxi ride).

Prettiest area in this country, imo. Some very nice “boutique” wines at reasonable prices that don’t get distributed nationally (so they don’t require preservatives, as with Italy, they taste better locally.) Wonderful seafood that just seems to taste better in that fresh air environment. Can also buy some high end spirits at better prices because of the lower alcohol tax. The game is safe, only covering the line will make the 2nd half interesting. Enjoy.

Try going to Muir Woods. That’s an incredible place to visit; the redwoods drop so many needles that it muffles sound the way a heavy snowfall does. It’s like a natural cathedral and it’s just across the bay from SF. You could go there on your way to or from wine country.

Clemson Tigers quarterback Kelly Bryant will transfer after losing the starting job over the weekend, according to Manie Robinson of the Greenville News.

“I feel like it’s what’s best for me and my future,” Bryant told the Greenville News. “I was just going to control what I could control and try to make the most of my opportunity, but at the end of the day, I just don’t feel like I’ve gotten a fair shot.”

Oh, I agree completely! Tech will never do better than (the) Johnson. They need to keep for another 20 years, at least. He can be their Bill Snyder.

The real problem at Tech is at AD. The nerds haven’t had a good AD since Homer Rice and that is why they find themselves in the situation they are in now. Tech actually became a pretty good basketball program for a while but they blew that too with bad coaching hires. Their problems are all self-created.

If I was going to be home I would probably have made the 3 1/2 hour ride up the coast to see you (any excuse for a trip to Monterrey). Unfortunately I will be in Vegas this weekend on my way back to CA. Enjoy all the fresh seafood.

PS- As a native Californian it was bizarre to me when I went to my first Cocktail Party and saw the sun rise over the ocean, I’d always seen it set on the ocean.

It was bizarre to me to go to the left coast for the first time and freeze my ass off in the water. And this was in San Diego! I always wondered why people built bonfires in those beach movies.

Welcome to Cali and have fun Senator. Pacific Grove is one of my favorite places, and I love the whole Monterey Peninsula.

Red House Cafe in downtown Pacific Grove for breakfast, brunch, or lunch. Passionfish in downtown Pacific Grove for nice dinner out.

And if you get over to Carmel, Carmel Bakery on Ocean Ave (left side as you head down the hill towards the ocean) has the best soft pretzel I’ve ever had in my life.

From Monterey Aquarium, a drive around Ocean View Drive out past Lovers Point Park and out past the lighthouse and around to Asilomar and 17 Mile drive entrance is a must. Turn into 17 mile drive and if you dont do the whole thing then go have a drink at the bar or fire pits at Inn at Spanish Bay (they will credit your 17 mile drive entry fee toward your bill). Time it for pre sunset for best results.

Walk out to end of Municipal Wharf 2 in Monterey for damn near guaranteed up close sea lion viewing. Stinky but worth it.

If you have a little extra time Point Lobos State Natural Preserve is just minutes south of Carmel and fun and beautiful to explore. If you have half a day extra and have never seen McWay Falls at Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park its worth the entry level jaunt down into Big Sur. Easy 5 min walk from the car and its pretty spectacular if you’re into that sort of thing.

I could go on and on but I wont. Enjoy!

Rise and shine campers! Not sure of the protocol with the Senator out of pocket but I did see some funny but not shocking news from ESPN. It seems that in Columbus Ohio, it’s like nothing ever happen to Meyer…maybe that’s because NOTHING did ever happen to Urvin. They’re stating that there is a ‘new normal’ like in happy valley. Really makes you wonder what the old ‘normal’ was. In any case this is the week of the ‘enabler bowl’. If there every was a meteor game for me, this is it.

And in Dawg news…I’m looking forward to the beat down of the Vols and the pitiful faces we’ll see in the stands. Go Dawgs!

It would be a CRIME to miss this game this weekend. I figure it will ENABLE the winner to continue towards the playoffs, while the loser will face the inevitable ABUSE of their fanbase at missing out on a great season.

From the Volnation board: “Considering the O line couldnt block a motivated middle- schooler , how long will our QB last ? I will set the over/under at 21 minutes before he is carried from the battlefield too broken ( emotionally and physically) to play any more at least for that day and maybe the remainder of the season. I am sincere, when I say we should quik kick on first down on any possession on our side of the 50. That might prevent an all-time epic rout like 100 to 3 .” 🙂
