I don’t really have a lot of time this morning before I head out to Laguna Seca, so I’ll be kind of brief. Tennessee ain’t winning today. All that’s up for debate is the margin of victory.
I’m nervous about predicting the Dawgs cover the enormous spread because Kirby likes to call off the dogs in the second half if Georgia gets out to a decently sized lead. The Vols are overmatched in a number of areas — don’t be surprised if that dormant pass rush many have been concerned about awakens against a pretty sorry offensive line — so that’s not an unlikely scenario.
All bets are off, of course, if Tennessee bleeds turnovers as it did against Florida last week, six in all. That, plus a safety, is how you let a mediocre Gators team run up the score at home.
I suspect UT plays it as conservatively as possible to keep things from getting out of hand for as long as possible. How long will that work? Probably not as long as Pruitt would like.
The other intangible to keep tucked in the back of your head today is how the coaches have gone about their business this week getting the players to flush the inconsistent play that marked some of what showed out against Missouri. On defense, things are helped by the Vols not having a dynamic downfield passing game that Smart and Tucker focused on stopping. I do expect a notable effort made to slow down Tennessee’s run game.
Add your thoughts in the comments and keep ’em coming through the game. I’ll be watching Porsches race and heading to the hospitality suite at game time to check out the game on my cell phone, WiFi be willing and the creek don’t rise.
Have fun, Senator. Sounds like a great time.

If the numbers on your previous post are a real indication of what we’ll see in this game, we will watch the Dawgs do laps around the field much like car racing.
I’m looking forward to the coming out of a pass rush that has been missing so far this year. Pruitt may just play for a moral victory in this game to save recruits. On D, they could try to keep everything in front of them and take no chances. The big plays will still come but they may limit them. On O, they need to burn that play clock down as low as possible every play to limit the time of beat down. They’ll lose big so their only hope is to cover so they can claim some kind of moral victory. Go Dawgs, make a statement!!! This is going to be a good day to be a Dawg!

Don’t care who is blaming whom, this is why you always have two guys prepared. We are one play from being dependent on a true freshman. We have had more opportunities to give meaningful reps to Fields than we have taken. Unlike many others who see him as a potential starter this year, I simply want a guy who can come in and take over the offense. I felt that way last season when many said redshirt Fromm to get separation, that option never became viable, but RSing a top quality, skill position guy isn’t very smart in today’s game.
Jake Fromm is the QB for this team, and he should be, but we don’t want to need Fields against an LSU or Kentucky and it be the first time he has played in truly live action. Get Fields into this game before it becomes simply a handoff offense just to run the clock. Maybe a series or two in the 2nd Qtr with the ones, or all of the 3rd Qtr with the twos playing like it is still 0-0.
LikeLike
Good points all around, Mac. I won’t say this is karma for Dabo, et al … just hope that Kirby takes note of what can happen and ensures that Fields is prepared for whatever may occur in the future.
LikeLike
I agree. You can’t redshirt FIelds until 2020. It looks like we will only have 3 scholarship QBs in 2019 with one of them being that Plumlee kid out of MS. I fully expect Plumless to redshirt that year. I don’t expect Fromm to go pro after his Junior year, so 2020 would have Fromm, Fields, Plumlee and 1 or 2 2020 recruits (assuming we don’t get a 2nd 2019 recruit at the last minute). Fromm would start, Felds could redshirt while playing in 4 games, and Plumlee will have a year in the system before coming in for garbage time / the single plays where Fromm’s helmet comes off.
Of course, that is assuming that Fields doesn’t transfer. He really shouldn’t though. It is painfully obvious that he is having a hard time pre-reading the defense and working through his progressions. After three years with Coley and Cheney, he could be absolutely dominant as a two year starter…. if he’ll stick around.
This year (and hopefully next year) he needs to prepare like he is 1B, play some meaningful snaps, and focus on improving on reading defenses while in clean-up duty. If I were Coley / Chaney, I would have a system where he signals what he thinks the defense is / was pre-snap and after the play.

It’s not that Georgia cannot play at a very high level. It’s that they can’t sustain that level..
Except for a couple of drives by Tennessee, the Dawgs have outplayed them..it’s the stuff, the second chances because of penalties, etc. that we GAVE them that are worrisome. This game should have been 40 something to maybe 7. Happy for the win, but a little less optimistic that we will win more than 10 in the regular season.

The offense has looked sloppy so far this year and could cost us but it’s mostly execution imo. It’s mostly things that can be fixed. I’m not nearly as concerned as I would be if it was a talent problem.
Obviously, we have to consider the competition but we’ve won every game comfortably while being sloppy and making mistakes. The OL is a bit concerning but Cleveland is a big loss and we’re moving guys all around. Honestly, we’ve played so many guys this year that I think that’s part of the problem. Not that I think we shouldn’t be playing guys and finding out what we have while we’re winning comfortably. It just seems to affect continuity or rhythm. I think this team has yet to find it’s legs so to speak and we’re still undefeated. I just don’t see big problems that can’t be fixed by simply playing better and executing. Of course, it’s a big problem if we can’t execute better.
LikeLike
Things just got weird from about midway in the 3rd through the top of the 4th. I thought playcalling was pretty good throughout save that 10-minute span. As other commenters noted, it was execution that left a lot to be desired. Curious if others think Fields has earned a lot more play time moving forward?
LikeLike
Yes..Fields is a problem for defenses. Play the kid…a lot.
LikeLike
Maybe on Fields but most of his success was in the ground. Sure, Fromm has been off a little at times but the entire offense hasn’t had much continuity. The entire offense! I don’t see one guy changing that.
There was that one series where Hardman, Godwin and Holloman all left something to be desired on pass plays. Missing Cleveland and playing so many guys seems to have a negative affect at times. Again, I think playing all these guys is gonna pay off down the road but the offense isn’t clicking or not really anything close to consistently right now. It’s frustrating now but what about if/when they get it together?
I really believe the vast majority of this team’s problem is execution and consistency. It’s concerning when thinking about an LSU’s defense but it’s very encouraging knowing that they can play better.
LikeLike
I don’t know about “earned” but for DC’s he’s a question without any good answers. When the defense has to account for him in the run game other things open up. If they don’t account for him, even better.
Need a to keep playing him as much as possible. We’re going to need him against the teams that can match up at the LOS. Those are the Bamas and Clemson’s and OSU’s and LSU’s and Auburn’s.

Folks that’s two weeks in a row we have looked unimpressive and totally underwhelming. Tennessee got steamrolled at home by a bad Florida team. We were out of synch and got beat fairly regularly on both lines of scrimmage. We may not be as good as we hope we are this year.

You have to be kidding. Tennessee had six turnovers last week.
We dominated today’s game. Tennessee had 66 yards rushing and their qb was rushed all day long. We amassed over 400 yards of balanced offense. We had the ball 15 minutes longer than they did, an entire quarter! If that’s not dominating both lines of scrimage I don’t know what is.

Ellis, I agree..the stats will look very good..It’s the sputtering mistakes that are concerning. T should have never gotten that first score..we gave it to them with a very, very stupid PF after stopping them. The Pass Interference was just an unfortunate stumble by the DB. The blown coverage on the bomb was a mistake. We had the ball slapped out of JF’s hands a couple of times. We got very lucky with the first one that bounced to Nauta. Also the one Fields dropped..either one could have been a quick 6 for Tennessee
All the talk on here was how we were going to beat Tennessee by a zillion points. We were clearly the best team, but we should have beaten Tennessee by a zillion points.
The best thing that happened today was the determination by our running backs and also the way Fields made a huge difference. Things are good but need to get better or we lose before long.

The Dawgs are so extraordinary talented that they can sputter and execute poorly and still win comfortably against most teams. That’s a great place to be. However, it does look like the team’s overall focus and attention to detail has slipped a bit from last year. Not badly, mind you — we’re still beating teams by an average of 30 points a game for God’s sake — but just enough to be noticeable.
I suspect what we’re seeing is a team that’s become a little bored and needs to be challenged. Vandy should be a breeze, but the LSU-Florida-Kentucky-Auburn stretch of games now looks like a legitimate gauntlet. I imagine we’ll roll out a tighter product for those games. We need to be, or we could easily eat an L or two in that stretch.

It wasn’t the beat down I hoped for against UT but the game was never in question. I’m glad Fields got more PT. I still don’t understand why we would pull him from short-yardage plays. I would think in short yardage you would want that extra threat of the QB run. I like Fields in the red-zone. Again, I have nothing against Fromm and I think the Dawgs win with him. But the more PT Fields gets, the more dangerous he becomes.
J. M., that stretch of games will be a fun challenge. The Dawgs really need to stay focused on that stretch (we do get an open Sat before UF). UK is still looking strong. I didn’t see the entire game but the time I watched it looked like Wilson found enough passing success to create even more issues for Ds. You got the feeling from the start that it was UK’s game to lose.
Ole Miss likes to score quickly and then get on the bus, so it’s hard to tell about LSU. We better be ready for a hostile environment, a good D and a surviving O when we visit the valley.
I will have to watch the replay of UF vs MsSt to form an opinion on UF, but I have the feeling MsSt isn’t what everyone thought. Still we shouldn’t take UF lightly.
Funny thing is about this season is, even with the miss-steps we’ve had on both sides of the ball, watching the Dawgs is FUN! Just a few years ago, even when we won, it was like pulling teeth. There was no peace.
We have much youth on this team and it’s fun watching them grow and get better. What a fun way to win! Go Dawgs.
P.S. I was really disappointed in the penalties, especially Walker’s push. I felt like JC#3 got a raw deal on the PI.

Other thoughts. When our OL is completely healthy, I think we’re a different team. Right now there is some lack-of-gelling going on. I don’t know enough about blocking schemes to add suggestive improvements but it appears our TEs are struggling with assignments. I don’t want our QBs getting hurt. Which reminds me, JF#1 took a shot on that play where he recovered his own fumble…it looked like it stunned him.

Nauta was rounded on that bizarre fumble recovery TD (it was his & Swift’s assignment that knocked the ball from Fromm). Too bad for UT it bounded straight up to Nauta’s paws. It looks like that kind of year for the Vols.

Well, that’s true re: the OL, but it;s quite the luxury to remain injury-free. Last year I was amazed how, with a super-thin OL and really only one guy at LT (Winn), we went the whole year without any major injuries.
But the youth and lack of focus on this team is the problem so far. How many pass plays were there in the first half that should have been touchdowns if the ball was caught, thrown just right, the effort timed right? Four? And then there’s Walker’s stupid penalty that led to Reed’s blown coverage for their first TD that allowed them to stay in a game that should have been 42-0 by that point.
This team is super-talented and we all know that but the growing up (including the backup OL) has to happen fast or the other shoe will be dropping very soon.
