Kirby Smart may say there’s no plan…

… but Gary Danielson begs to differ.

“They are navigating waters that no one knows how to do,” Danielson said. “This new rule of four games – the unintended consequences – are being dealt with all through college football. All the coaches are flying blind. Players are trying to figure out what to do.”

Danielson cited the Georgia Bulldogs as an example.

Kirby Smart’s team utilized both Jake Fromm and Justin Fields last week in a win over Tennessee. The SEC on CBS analyst believes the Bulldogs are preparing for No. 1 Alabama.

“I think Georgia is going to settle on a two-quarterback system,” he said. “I think the Georgia is getting ready for Alabama. They are getting ready for LSU. I think the way they are looking at this is we are our best when we play both.

“I think Alabama, in a tight game, does not play both. They may go with a change-up with Jalen Hurts, but I think Tua is their best chance. I think when Georgia looks at a game, their best chance is to play both of them.”

Georgia is getting ready for Alabama?  Kinda cocky, doncha think?

It makes a certain kind of sense, I guess. I know the old saying about “If you have two quarterbacks, you don’t really have a quarterback,” or whatever it is, but I’d like to see Kirby prove that wrong.

True, but they both needed therapy afterward.

He alternated when he got disgusted by one, Kirby is alternating when he needs a change of pace or feel. For now anyway.

I love Jake, and wowza, 72% completion % or whatever, and still Fields is pushing him hard for time. They are both pretty good.

Already prepping for the SECCG? Saban wouldn’t have time for that shit, which makes me suspect Kirby doesn’t either.

One of the few times agree with Danielson.

They need Tua to play well to win and Hurts is irrelevant if he does or stays healthy.

We probably need both guys to play out of their damn minds. That’s why I want both guys taking meaningful snaps especially vs. good competition.

I also agree that this season is one week at a time for the team, but the coaches have one focus: win on 12/1/18.

I don’t know what CKS is planning, and Gary D. probably doesn’t really know, but Gary loves the Bulldogs and I am sure he is looking forward to the LSU game.

I know I am looking forward to it, win or loose, UGA will have a better idea of where the team is and what needs to improve. The good news for UGA is LSU is not a must win in the playoff era not that I want or expect a loss.

I am also interested to see Bama LSU as it will be the 1st time I think Bama will begin to be tested. The divisions are UGA’s and Bama’s to loose and I don’t see Bama letting it slip away, very good odds Bama rolls into Atlanta with a perfect record.

Don’t agree about UGA having a loss to give next week. If we lose there, and KY bests us, Atlanta goes Poof! UGA needs that game for several reasons but tough game against a good KY game on the road, combined with a competitive game against Florida before that makes a loss next week a do or die the rest of the way. Not saying we can’t win the rest, but it is never a slam dunk. We have had some wear and tear on a few key players already and the more physical games istill n front of us. Better keep chopping, no room for a mistake this early, imo.

That makes me a bit nervous (sorry, its the Munson effect). There is something calming about settling on your guy behind center and everyone knowing what to expect (at least for your team). The fact that AL is better when they don’t monkey with it, and the fact that we are supposed to be at our best because we have to….I dunno. Just makes me nervous.

    • You’re not the only one. UT certainly looked nervous when Fields was under center.

I like that, keep in mind many Bama fans were calling for Tua to get more snaps if not start long before the Championship Game. The further we get in the season the less surprised I would be if the SECCG sees the script reversed with a QB change.

Big difference, Hurts was totally ineffective throwing the ball, was missing the key piece for a QB. Fromm may not be a Fields running it, but you have to account for him some, anyone can run against air. You don’t have to run for 20+ often because 6, 8, etc., and can extend almost every drive. Big trade off.

I do feel KS likes the additional pressure it puts on a defense but it isn’t a night/day situation like Hurts/Tua. I do think he is preparing for the possibility Jake could miss a couple of games, or a few series in a game. That can make the difference in one, or more, games if Fields isn’t ready. He looks good, and I think we will see more plays as he gets the hang of the offense and reading defenses. Don’t see an underlying conspiracy, but I do see Kirby checking another detail box.

Kirby is playing one game at a time while looking at AL in the rearview mirror.

Its apparent that Fields brings something to the table that Fromm does not. So of course CKS and Co. want to get him involved more. He is too talented.

The issue is Fromm is just so damn efficient at what he does it will be hard to unseat him as a starter. If the coaches can actually get a two QB system working, more power to them. I’d say history is against them however.

Danged good for leather helmets and no facemasks weren’t they? 🙂 No TV, but Larry painted some damn fine pictures. Will catch you age wise in about 3 months.

Dual system QBs were easier then, than today. The cadence may have been a little different, and the pitch position on option plays, but not as difficult as the cadence issue combined with knowing the abilities and speed of 5-6 receivers. If two QBs in today’s game can pull it off with more pluses than negatives, we may have them.

I honestly went in this year thinking this was probably a 10-2 regular season team and that next year would begin the steam rolling. I still feel like this is probably where we are and it’s not for lack of talent but we are just so damn young all over the place. I will be happ if we get to the SEC championship I will be pleased.

There is no reason to expect a loss other than it is just difficult for any team to bring their A-game every Saturday. If we, and we should, play our best games against the toughest opponents, we go undefeated in regular season play.
I have not been overly impressed with the teams on our schedule. Right now LSU seems to be the best we’ll play but I think we will be able to force them into a one dimensional offense. Their D will keep it close but I don’t see their offense keeping pace. I don’t expect Barrow to have a good game against us.
The same with UK. We’ll force them to rely on Wilson’s arm. UF has looked good against bad opponents but lost to UK by two possessions. Aub’s offense has looked underwhelming against teams less talented that UGA.
We have no reason to expect 2 losses. We are not perfect but we are better than anyone on schedule.

The design of Georgia’s run game is mostly the zone read scheme whether they read it or not. Without the threat of the QB keeping the ball at least occasionally the backs are running into a congested box. Fromm kept it enough last year to keep defenses honest but that must be off-limits this year. Fields is the perfect fit but he’s gonna have to ultimately throw the ball too. Who knows where this is headed. I’m not sure the coaches do either.

  12. I think this is being made more complicated than it is. Coaches still have to do what is best for the team and not decisions based on whether or not a guy will transfer. The redshirt thing seems easy, too- are we going to use them this year or no?
