It’s another lather, rinse, repeat story today, isn’t it? Another opponent over-matched on paper that embarrassed the Dawgs at home the last time they faced off in Athens sounds a lot like the Tennessee meeting.
And don’t take my word on being embarrassed.
A piece of paper is taped to the window panes of Georgia’s weight room.
“2016: ‘Embarrassment in Sanford!,’ ” it reads, along with a photo of former Vanderbilt linebacker Zach Cunningham making a tackle. Cunningham had the game’s key tackle as Georgia was stopped on a fourth-down toss sweep play and lost to the Commodores 17-16 after a noon kickoff.
It was one of five losses in Georgia’s first season under head coach Kirby Smart. The wins were close, but the losses were aplenty, and this loss to a would-be 6-6 Vanderbilt team was one of the most scathing.
Sanford Stadium was lifeless, shocked and dejected as a subdued crowd watched Georgia lose to Vanderbilt — the second-to-last team in the SEC East that season.
You know, for a guy who claims he doesn’t use stuff like that for motivational purposes during the week leading up to a game, Kirby sure doesn’t seem to know what’s going on in the weight room. But I digress.
On paper, it’s not pretty if you’re Vanderbilt.
2018 NCAA RANKINGS

The Commodores are also giving up close to a yard more per play on defense than Georgia has.
Common opponents? Georgia beat Middle Tennessee by a wider margin and crushed a South Carolina team that handled Vandy in Nashville.
Momentum? Vanderbilt’s lost two of its last three, the only win being a narrow squeaker over Tennessee State. The worst we can say about Georgia is that the 5-0 Dawgs haven’t been winning big enough to suit some observers. (Hey, they can become bowl-eligible with a win today!)
So, yeah, that whole paper thing isn’t a good look for the visitors. But it usually isn’t and, as already noted, that didn’t prevent them from leaving town with a W the last time they were here. Here’s Kirby’s mea culpa for that:
“The guys were tired and physically beat-up because it was after the South Carolina Sunday game (after Hurricane Matthew). A lot of those guys didn’t get recovery, and we tried to practice that Monday, which was probably an error on my part, but we don’t look backwards right now.”
They may not look backwards, but I would be shocked if Smart didn’t learn from the experience. Whatever else may transpire, I doubt this team will look the same way tonight. Barring a turnover barrage, I think Georgia covers.
Your thoughts and observations, as always, are welcomed in the comments. I’ll be heading up to Athens in a few minutes, so enjoy the rest of the day. It’s another college football Saturday, so, really, how bad could it be?
51-10 – maybe 17… 35-7 at the half. And I think Kirby will finally let Fields throw the football…

Heard from someone in the know in 2016 after the fact that the coaches knew by about Thursday of that week that the team was exhausted and worn down, but they really didn’t think it would matter bc they ran the ball so well vs SCU. They thought they would just grind through them.

Would you care to take a peek at how Vandy played Notre Dame on the road.
That game was very close.
Sure the coaches have brought that game to the attention of the players, too.
Granted ND has made a change at QB since then, and rightfully so.

I expect this game to be what we’ve seen thus far from the Dawgs. We’ll control the game and the outcome will obvious the whole way. The youth will show up in a few series but never put doubt in our minds.
I will be watching those areas of concern we’ve discussed in the previous games, looking for improvements.
I’m curious to see some players improve as their health improves. Swift, Godwin…others.
I expect quality PT for Fields.
I’m sure we’ll continue our usual power-run-often offense and I expect Tucker to force Wilson to beat us with his arm.
Another note: I’m guessing our 5 star WR recruit, Jadon Haselwood, didn’t feel we threw the ball enough for him to remain committed. Someone is most likely whispering in his ear.

Little off topic, but I was thinking:
As much fun as it is to root against Clemson and tOSU, we need them and Oklahoma to win out. Then it’s us vs Bama in the SECC for the 4th spot, which also ensures we don’t have to play them twice.
I know its not even half way through the season, but that’s my way early take

Clemson might, OU went down, ND prob will, OSU prob will. I think the sec champ would still get in if it’s down to us or Washington.

The 2018 247 composite team talent rankings came out the other day and the Gators were ranked 6th in the nation in overall talent. So technically, they could be considered as playing below their talent level since they just got in to the AP/Coaches top 25 this past week.

Definitely some frustration in this game.
– We aren’t dominating against Vandy’s OL the way we should.
– I fucking HATE it that we had yet another OL injured. I’ll bet Kindley is out for the year.
– Whichever asshole was blowing a whistle from the stands should be kicked out of the game.
– Vanderbilt, fucking Candy Vandy, is running the ball down our throats. We don’t have a championship run defense. Kentucky is going to run for about 300 on us.

I hope you can hang on to that LOL. That would mean we keep winning and I was wrong. But that was typed when an unranked Vandy was gashing our D for what would have been the go ahead score against the No 2 team in their own house in the 2nd quarter. We haven’t faced a single ranked team and we have the toughest schedule going forward for undefeated teams. If you don’t think this team and it’s difficulty getting going is not capable of losing to UF and UK, if not anyone else, good for you. I know we can blow everyone on our schedule out of the water, I just see a lot that tells me we’ll struggle.

1) They have nearly doubled our rushing yards (we only have 56 yards rushing? WTF)
2) They have nearly double our time of possession.
3) We have already given up 230 yards and 11 first downs.
And yet:
4) We have scored TDs on 3 of 5 possessions.
5) We are up 21-6.
I really hope our defense figures out what is up. A few QB sacks would be nice.

Obviously I am just a fan and don’t know shit… but man sometimes it feels bad having our 3rd string QB in for an entire quarter.
Getting playing time for backups is great, but is there a point where we are hurting our starters by limiting how much game time they are getting?
Is it at all possible this has any role in our slow starts and seeming sloppiness?
The above might make no sense at all… just trying to figure out the weirdness in our team despite the fact that when the game ends, its another blowout win and thus I feel like I should just be happy – and yet something feels off.

I think we may be suffering from early-onset Saban disease. We enjoyed such a high level of football last year that anything less feels unsatisfying.
I think about what it must be like to be a Tide fan. You get the big trophy and every year after is disappointing if you don’t repeat. And I worry a bit about us finally getting the prize; where will we go from there? The novelty will be gone. I know once the Braves won the WS my interest slowly diminished. As Trump said: we gonna win so much you get sick of winning.

“This Bama-esque entitlement” … I prefer to call it the “natty or bust” crowd.
This team is not perfect. It has a big hole in the middle of the defense where we lost 2 DGDs (R and Atkins). Hopefully, we can play around the injuries on the offensive line the next couple of games before Big Ben gets back.
One thing this team has that past teams didn’t have is quality depth. I think Brenton Cox is growing up before our eyes. Adam Anderson is going to be a beast with a season in the weight room. Mark Webb looks smooth in the secondary along with all of those young guys. We plug in 4 and 5 star prospects for offensive linemen that have gotten hurt.

He was sitting on his butt before the laid across the goal line..the crowd knew it and was booing. Also, the PI calls were (IMHO) sympathy calls by what was the most over-active officiating crew we’ve seen in a long time. They seemed to think the game was about them.

That crew is always flag-happy, and they always have a conference after every call. They’re the worst crew, in my opinion, overall. The targeting on Reed might have been the worst on-field targeting call I’ve ever seen.

Nope – it was a terrible flag regardless of the emphasis on targeting. If Reed’s play required a flag to have the suits in Birmingham review the call, then just stop playing football because it wasn’t even close. He hit the guy with his shoulder without launching. It was a clean play in live action.
If the replay officials had let the call stand, Reed would be sitting out the 1st half next week in Red Stick. I don’t think any of us would have thought that was proper.

I think the coaching staff used this game to showcase some really fast and furious passing….but mostly to rest the running backs and O’line (pass blocking instead of run blocking) and get ready for what may be a tired LSU offense. When we threw the ball the first three downs, I started wondering what was the plan. I think I see it. LSU will have to work really, really hard on their pass coverage all week. Georgia’s running backs will be fresh. Fromm and Fields present huge problems and both can do a lot of things which largely overlap.
The only real concern was the run defense..but we knew ahead of time that CKS was going to try to keep Vandy from hitting the long one..and he pretty much accomplished that.
And as ugafidelus mentioned above..Vandy did not score on their TD.

I thought we were a little slow out of the box, but overall looked more sharp, at least offensively. Looked like keeping Fromm in the entire first half(?) helped.
Sucks the OL can’t stay the same. Thomas looked hobbled at one point, Kindley’s injury and Mays chalking up another PF – lots of rotation there though I wonder if the coaches realize the meat grinder starts now so it looked to me to be a concerted effort to avoid lots of subbing, at least until the game was in hand.
Run defense is a bit concerning. Not sure why the coaches think we are susceptible to the long ball. Seems to me with RLIII and Reed with Baker pretty much shut down 2/3 of the field. Looked like we got pressure at times to disrupt Vandy’s passing game but yes, still not enough sacks. But I’m not in the arena so I still trust the coaches to know what they are doing.
Think the team knows it can out talent teams, but personally, I felt a bit more satisfied about this game compared to the Mizzou and Tenn games. Hoping the team is turning the corner so to speak.

I hate to see the injuries on the OL, but getting Sayler on the field may be a positive. He seemed to do well.
I believe it took an injury to get Cleveland on the field last year, and we know how that worked out.

Cleveland was a reaction to the Auburn game. I imagine there was more to it than that, like he had been coming on in practice, but they made the change likely because they were manhandled in the middle that week.

Agreed with both you and Biggus. Just hate that the injuries are causing some shuffling the coaches perhaps weren’t planning on doing. I still have the feeling going forward, we’ll see less shuffling as we get into the meat of our schedule but I trust the coaches to sort it out. Schaffer played well from what I saw last night. Crazy to think that when Big Ben comes back, the talent that will have to sit the bench. Not too bad a problem to have 🙂

Way to go. You just proved you’re wrong:
“Note 1: “Targeting” means that a player takes aim at an opponent for purposes of attacking with forcible contact that goes beyond making a legal tackle or a legal block or playing the ball.”
In what world was Reed not clearly playing the ball? But please, put some more words in our mouths.

I never said it was targeting, I said it was worth looking at. Put that in your mouth. It was a fucking judgement call and was correctly reversed.

The targeting call on the Vandy player was wrong too. He was plainly coming in, almost gently, to help wrap up the runner. That helmets will sometimes touch is unavoidable.
I suppose it’s better to err on the side of caution when it comes to safety.
But this crew seems to have a propensity to throw flags. I even thought the continued flagging of Vandy for having too many in the backfield got ridiculous. It’s like offsides on a KO…happens all the time but is a ticky tac call if it’s close.
LikeLike
I hope we never see that crew again. The calls were ridiculous. They extended the game way too long. There was no touchdown on their last play and no review of an obviously blown call. It was almost like they had to call a targeting call on us to balance the one they threw on them. Is Mark Curles on this crew?
