I really enjoyed reading this tortured column explaining that Tech might find it necessary to can the genius after this season while simultaneously holding the position that “I’m on record as believing the next Tech coach mightn’t do as well as Johnson“.
If you’re a Georgia fan, that’s about as win-win as it gets.

I’m glad Fech wasn’t smart enough to hire Cutcliffe. He could have done some serious damage on North Avenue with access to 3-stars and low 4-star recruits with NFL dreams.

What I hope they don’t do is find a young version of Mike Leach and air it out. Tech can probably recruit enough fast WRs and a gunslinger QB to make it work. Defense couldn’t be worse than it is now.

Bradley’s point was that the Tech program is now so f#cked up that even firing Fishfry and replacing him with someone competent won’t get ’em any more wins, at least in the short term. Tech and Duke have basically traded places in football with Tech the new doormat. That’s what I think he is saying. I agree with that premise but from an institutional perspective instead. Why would any player worth sh!t go to Tech? The Tech Athletics Department is all messed up and Stansbury is not helping things. Tech hasn’t had a good AD since Homer Rice, the AD who brought Bobby Ross and Bobby Cremins to Tech. In order to turn things around Tech first has to get an outstanding AD. Will Tech do that? Not a chance!

I think the point was “Mr College Football isn’t the only one who can bang out a column that doesn’t tell you anything.” Bradley sounds like an economist in this one; if you took all the economists in the world and laid them end to end, they still wouldn’t reach a conclusion.

The point I got was that poor Georgia Tech didn’t have the money to keep up with the Dukes and NC States of the world. This despite the fact that every graduate of Georgia Tech starts at an average salary of $1M. I know this because I read it on Stingtalk.

He said Duke is the most apt comparison in terms of institution in the ACC Coastal and that while Johnson once owned Duke, but now Duke owns Johnson; and that “Duke should never be above Tech’s weight class.” Then he said that getting the additional money that would be necessary to regain competitiveness, i.e., facilities and staffing, would be a hard sell under Johnson, with his retro, unsexy style and lack of interest in high profile recruiting.
The point pretty much the title itself: They may want to keep Johsnon but they may not be able to afford continuing with him much longer.

In all fairness, Duke, Vandy, Stanford, etc. all have more options for majors than Tech. If you don’t want to do business or STEM at Tech, there are very few options.

I don’t agree that the ’09 Georgia team was “disinterested.” That team was motivated having been spanked on Senior Night in front of all their parents, family and friends by Kentucky. The QB was injured and really couldn’t throw deep (nobody knew that) and they had to run the ball–and did. The Georgia OL played an outstanding game and the backs (Waushan Ealey and Caleb King) had great games, particularly Ealey. The ’09 team fought back from adversity in the first half of the season (caused in part at least by some questionable in-game coaching decisions that led to at least 2 losses, maybe more) to post an 8-5 record when it looked like they were going to have a losing season. I’m proud of that team.

Stansbury’s two options this past offseason were either fire Johnson or give him a contract extension. He was afraid to pull the trigger and fire him, so he went with the extension. Firing Johnson at that point would have been relatively cheap, as he only had 2 or 3 years left on his contract. But now they’re in a real pickle with this new, longer contract.

Why were those his only options? Couldn’t he have done nothing? Johnson was under contract through 2020. What was Johnson going to do, leave and go to a FCS school?

It was strange timing. Georgia Tech just finished a poor recruiting season, 10th in the ACC.
Perhaps Johnson’s agent played the ‘stability card’ as the reason and Stansbury bought it. FWIW, GT is 11th in ACC recruiting so far for 2019.

His terrible recruiting would supposedly have suffered even more. The coaching fraternity has convinced everyone that they have to have a minimum of 4-5 years left on their contracts at all times in order to recruit.
Stansbury was afraid to fire him. He would have been even more afraid to buck the 4-5 year contract “rule” and leave Johnson with a 3 year deal. Was it technically an option? I guess so but I also think that most ADs wouldn’t consider that either.

if he wanted to get rid of FF anyway, why not just decline to extend him? What happens? FF quits? Problem solved, no buyout. He stays and has a bad year and gets fired? Problem solved with a smaller buyout. He stays and has a great year and they want to extend him (the least likely outcome, IMO)? Problem solved, extend him. Maybe you pay more then, but it’s a good risk to take.
ADs make me wonder sometime.

He also gave Pastner an extension. Stansbury is in the middle of his second year and so far none of the big three sports at Tech has achieved a winning conference record during his tenure. None appear to be on the upswing.
I can see where he will be pressured to make a change, any change.

Staying the course for continuity sake is the best play here.
Focus on the fundraising effort instead. Allow that stellar academic reputation to shine. Rest assured, it is the moral imperative.

Tech could easily do better than him as their coach and it would likely only take a season or 2 to turn things around.
That they dont want to do better than him is really surprising.

I think Tech needs to prepare for a rebuild that will last more than a season or two. Going from the triple option to an offense invented in the 20th century is going to require not only a massive roster overhaul but also a massive mindset overhaul in the recruiting department to make that overhaul possible.

I completely disagree. The new coach will bring in new staff so your “mindset” issue is fixed. The OL would need to learn how to block again and you would need a QB, but otherwise it shouldn’t be hard to teach and recruit some D1 athletes how to play “modern” football. If they even got a handful of blue chips from in state, they should be able to get better.

The Techsters are so stupid…..they had a national level program in the first half of the 20th century under Bill Alexander and the second half of the 40s into the 50s and the first half of the 60s when they had Bobby Dodd, who was a good coach. Basically 40 years of successful football. But they squandered it with notoriously bad hires. And the hires all had to be “Tech Men”(at least at first)–remember? So they hired Bud Carson (a Dodd assistant) and fired him after 5 seasons. Then they hired Bill Fulcher (a former Tech player). He lasted 2. Then Pepper Rogers (former Tech player) who lasted 5. Then Bill Curry (former Tech player) who lost so many games at first that he broke records at Tech for losing, then had some modest success at the end and left for Bama and to be run out of Tuscaloosa later. The only good hire was Bobby Ross (not a Tech Man) who after losing at first won half a nattie in 1990. But he left for the pros after 5 seasons (see a pattern here?) when he had winning teams and could get a better job.Then Bill Lewis, another bad hire who was fired mid-season after 1 1/2 years. In the rubble they hired George O’Leary who proved to be a competent HC but he left for ND (although he never coached a game there) and the bad hires started all over again ( I won’t go through them all). But here’s my point: Tech was once a power but lost it and now has sunk to the depths–a losing program in the inferior-assed ACC because of bad coaching hires. FF is just the latest in a long line. I don’t think they can ever get it back again either. UT needs to look at what happened to Tech because the Vowels are in the middle of the very same thing happening to them. If Pruitt doesn’t work out for them……..
