Extremism in the defense of LSU football is no vice.

James Carville urges Greg Sankey to reverse the targeting call on Devin White, compares the moment to Reagan’s “tear down this wall” (yes, somewhat tongue in cheek, but only somewhat).

Sometimes, it really does mean more.

It won’t make one iota of difference.LSU could play with 12 men and still not beat Bama.

It won’t likely change the outcome of who wins but losing their best defender for the first half will change the game a few iotas. By the time he comes on the field, the game might well be over. Very significant impact for LSU’s chances, which weren’t great before this particular call was made. I would rather they institute a 30 yard penalty than levy a 1/2 game penalty two weeks later. Does the player really learn anything they didn’t already know?

If Carville is for it, it must be a bad idea. Looked like head to head (and late) to me. Why is Carville against player safety? 😉

LSU already lining up their excuses? That bodes well for them….

Governor is involved, too. I bet they still have some ‘friends’ who can dig up dirt on those Saban-SEC-NCAA relationships.

    Won’t matter tho.

I didn’t see the LSU-MSU game. Was it really targeting? The officials have been getting that call wrong a lot lately.

I hadn’t looked at the play until just now, but it was a terrible call.

I agree. White didn’t lead with his helmet, he pushed Fitzgerald down with great force, using both arms, after he had completed his throw. He was clearly a defenseless player, but as far as I could see any helmet-to-helmet contact was incidental and difficult to discern. A roughing the passer call would have been entirely appropriate but I think it was a terrible targeting call. However, Carville’s comment betrays an extraordinary ignorance about Sankey, Steve Shaw, and the SEC officiating office: they are far more unresponsive and especially unforthcoming than Gorbachev’s Soviet Union. It’s difficult to see them even deigning to acknowledge any controversy about this, let alone respond with an obligatory “Shut up and mind your own business” reply.

All we know is this is NOT targeting.

Oof. Yeah, that should have been called.

He hit him in the collarbone, which is why it’s injured. JG’s head doesn’t even move.

If the LSU player had aimed lower, this isn’t an issue.

His helmet pretty clearly hits his chin.

So clearly his helmet doesn’t snap up or back?

That’s the telltale sign officials are looking for. JG must have amazing neck strength.

I’m not going to argue with you. You can see where the helmet is on the replay. If you want to ignore clear evidence of contact because his head doesn’t immediately snap back, be my guest.

I see his helmet in JG’s collarbone, which is why it’s injured.

Yes, Mack is really lucky JG didn’t duck his head at all, in which case it is clear targeting and he’s out the rest of that game.

And this, my friends, is the main problem with the targeting call. If a defender aims low, to prevent targeting, but the offensive player goes low, causing contact, the defender gets thrown out of the game. You’re thrown out based on the actions of another player. Your intent to avoid head-to-head as the defender means nothing.

    • WTF? Was that not called for targeting? Why does the rule even exist, if this doesn’t count?

“Letter of the law” targeting fouls are really frustrating. Incidental, no intent, and yet a guy gets tossed.

But I honestly don’t know how you ask officials to judge intent or severity, even in replay. I;m cool with the rule, as long as it’s applied consistently.

This is the P12 targeting that had Leach up in and arms, the one that Woody overruled?

It won’t matter..just like it didn’t matter that Tennessee had a player ejected at almost the very beginning of the game for doing less than ‘Bama players did several times during that game. The premise of Carville’s piece is that Alabama is treated differently (as in “better”) than other teams. But when a team is that good, it wouldn’t matter if you reversed the bias.
I thought UGA was safe when I learned it wouldn’t be SEC refs in the NC game. It’s just uncanny the way things fell for the Tide.
But come’on SEC..they no longer need the help.

Same here about the Big 10 refs. I thought if there was going to be any bias, it would be against Bama because of them getting in over OSU. I don’t think there was a conspiracy with the SEC brass, just the implicit bias and benefit of the doubt that dynastic teams/players always get. On the other hand, my 85 year old dad is convinced the boys in the desert were involved with the officiating.

Didn’t matter where the refs were from. Mob money bought ‘em.

I just wish UGA played Alabama every year. You guys would have a totally different mindset on that program. One of Saban’s best buddies from his days at LSU is none other than Mark Emmert, head of the NCAA, who was at LSU with Saban. New cars, cash, T Town Menswear, house sitting for Mamas, etc…none of it matters. The SEC office in Birmingham is inundated with Alabama football fans, the supervisor of officials is Steve Shaw, Alabama graduate, the replay official in the SEC office on Saturday was Al Ford of Florence, Alabama, he of a family of huge Alabama football supporters. He retired in 2002 or thereabouts, and was brought back in to be a replay official by Shaw. Surprised? So, how old is this guy? The officials don’t make the call on the hit on the UT QB when Alabama’s best defensive player Mack Wilson nails him in the chin/head, but find a way to throw LSU’s best linebacker out on a PUSH to Fitzgerald in the 2nd half…which sends Devon White to the sideline for the remainder of the Miss St game and the first half vs Alabama in two weeks.. Then you have the Alabama player throwing 4 or 5 punches in a previous game and all that does is get Saban a sit down with the Commissioner and a ” handle it internally” deal. If y’all can’t see the SEC protecting the cash cow, go get an eye test. It happens all the time.

How did they get that big 10 side judge on board?

    • Alabama could have beaten Tennessee by 4 touchdowns without any help, but if you watched the first quarter of that game you must have seen the ridiculous holds by the Bama O-line that gave Tua all day to throw. At one point a flag went out, Danielson pointed out the obvious hold by Bama’s backside tackle, and the ref called a personal foul hands to the face on UT instead. It is completely corrupt and we are all going to have to deal with it until Nick breaks the Bear’s record. At that point they may back off of the cheating some. Laugh all you want, but this isn’t some flat earth conspiracy.

Do a little digging and you’ll find that you don’t have to explain anything about Al Ford to UGA fans, and it has nothing to do with Bama.

    • I don’t disagree with any of what was said about Bama getting calls, old boys network, etc. But, they did get totally hosed on the pick play Clemson used to win the Nat’l Championship. I cannot believe a penalty wasn’t called.
