Five-star BS

This quote from a former Vol ought to leave a mark.

Then again, Booch is pretty shameless.

I thought the bigger thing for him to have done was to lay low…some folks just don’t get it.

Correct. In English soccer, when a player transfers within the league, it’s common practice to not celebrate should you score against your former team. Seems like a good lesson; but then pettiness does make for hard-core rivalries.

If you think about it he pretty much nailed his own coffin with that cigar pic. If he ever coaches on the field again there will be plenty of concrete evidence that can be fed to recruits that directly relate to how he handles himself around these young adults. Just think about the negative recruiting memes that can already be shown, don’t even need to talk about it, just show pictures and tweets.

Shoot, it ain’t like he left for greener pastures; they fired is ass. He’s got every right to smoke cigars and celebrate with the team that scooped him up. Light that cigar with a fat wad of your buyout money if you feel like it.

I agree, if a man feels good about his day he ought to be able to light up a cigar to celebrate it. I don’t see the fuss.

It isn’t just that they fired him. The fan base gave up on him after a 9 win season because they had expected him to win the SEC East. Instead, they watched McElwain win for the second consecutive time. Butch lost the team last year because the players knew he had lost the fan base. There was plenty of talent on that team just as there is now. They treated the man like shit. I too say he should light that cigar with big wad of buyout cash.

I agree, MGW. Jones is entitled to take another job, and to buy into the team he is now a part of.
UT fired him. Jones owes UT nothing.
And, as Bill Glennon said below, Jones was an excellent February coach. He consistently had recruiting classes that were in the top 3 or 4 in the conference. If that arrogant ass Pruitt cannot finish in the top half of the conference with the talent Jones left him then Pruitt is more of a problem for UT than Jones is celebrating with the team that hired him.

Jones may not be a great coach, but he did not leave Knoxville devoid of talent. UT has a lot of playmakers on offense and a senior-laden defense. They were always in the top ten in recruiting with Jones.

Pruitt may bash the players, and maybe he needs his own guys, but the guys that are there, are good.

How’d Kirby react to beating his alma mater in 2008, ‘12, and ‘15?

    I’m guessing he was pleased.

It was the alabama players that made it a big deal. What’s the guy supposed to do? Shun them? Look miserable?

If I’d lost 12 straight to an annual opponent and the gap never appeared wider than now, I’d probably have butt hurt too. That’s what this is.

  7. One can only assume Saban hired him as a troll. Well done master Saban. Well done…

  8. Uglydawg

Not my idea..but a funny one (even if it’s only fantasy) from last week’s blogs.
Saban should have turned the team over to BJ to coach after the first quarter, and gone up and led the band for the rest of the game.
THAT would have been the ultimate troll.
Our nation’s tradition of politeness and manners is in shambles anyway.

  9. Just more sour grapes from fans and former players of a program that’s been struggling for a long time. I kinda doubt this would be talked about if UT wasn’t struggling.

That entire program has been cancerous for a while and it’s why I’ve felt they were that they have been the worst fan base since 2005. They’ve taken it personally and go out of their way to make it personal with opposing fans more than any fan base I’ve ever seen. I’m talking white trash level!

I can’t stand Bama but screw UT! I know they have good people but I don’t know where they’ve been. And they fired Jones so I don’t have a huge problem with it. Was it tacky? Sure! So was an inspirational trash can. It’s also apt for UT.

Agree. From all the whining and delusions of granduer, you’d think utk football history was equivalent to the Wooden/UCLA glory years. They can’t get it through their heads that no coach with a good reputation wants/wanted anything to do with the school.

  10. HiAltDawg

It’s purdy damn sad when Joey Freshwater handles things more quietly than Booch managed to.

  11. 79Dawg

He may not owe the University, fans, Fulmer, etc. jack, but he does owe 3/4 of the players on the other sideline something…

    • MGW

I’m still not clear on what he did wrong. Wasn’t like he was giving double middle fingers to the other sideline. He didn’t dump Gatorade on himself.

  12. Doug

I feel bad for the player—it’s one thing for Bootch to have cratered the UT program, it’s another thing entirely for him to now dance (awkwardly) on its grave. That said, Vol Nation is really splitting hairs if they think a 58–21 leveling would’ve hurt any less whether Bootch was on the Bama sideline, the Tennessee sideline, or the dark side of the moon.

And I certainly don’t have any sympathy for Bootch getting fired. What, does he think he got treated unfairly? There’s not a program in the SEC that wouldn’t can a coach’s ass for going oh-fer in conference. Certainly not when you’ve been there five seasons, which is plenty of time to learn to tell your ass from a hole in the ground.

  13. He was fired and got a new job. Therefore he correctly switched his loyalty to his new employer like he should have done. Exactly the same way any other employee in any other field would do. There is nothing here.

  14. South FL Dawg

Booch doesn’t have to care about any hurt feelings because he gets to live off the buyout money for the rest of his life. Wouldn’t surprise me if he took the Bama gig just so he’d get the chance to rub it in Tenn’s face.

  15. Will Trane

Have you heard or read where any current or former player walked over to him and spoke with him prior to the game.
    He was fired.
    He was hired by Bama.
He still draws a buy-out check from UT.
If he wants to light up a cigar with Bama players, what business it of UT fans and players.
Get over yourself. Stop whinning, and wanting folks to feel sorry for you. What a damn waste of time and emotional behavior.
What he should have done was make a draw, exhale, flipped off Fulmer, and said thanks.
And besides it did not bother Saban.
