Back to basics

Will Georgia have its head on straight today?  Who knows?

“Everybody knows what’s at stake, everybody knows what we’re playing for, and everybody knows where we want to go,” Georgia running back Elijah Holyfield said. “If everybody is on the same page, I think we’ll be fine.”

It would be nice to think that the one thing to salvage after the disappointing loss to LSU is a return to the mindset that drove the 2017 team.  (Yeah, I get that it’s not the same exact bunch taking the field today, but they’re not that different.  Certainly the coaching staff ain’t.)

“It’s the leaders of the program and the organization and the coaches that have to get over it,” Smart said. “We’re the ones that deal with a loss sometimes harder than the players.”

If my head and heart did battle over things like stats and how meaningful they were leading into the LSU game, they’re in agreement this morning on the main factor:  today’s game is about being ready to play football for sixty minutes.

“I think the most important thing for these guys is to focus on playing well, not the pageantry, not the surroundings, all that,” Smart said. “It doesn’t matter. You gotta get back to playing well.”

Truth.  Also easier said than done.

I do think that Georgia shows up to play a more solid game in Jacksonville than it did in Baton Rouge.  Admittedly, that’s not saying much.  I also think the intangibles favor the Gators — Chip Towers’ observation that Dan Mullen is playing with house money at this point in his first season in Gainesville resonates with me.

In the end, Georgia is the more talented team and talent will out.  Dawgs win, but don’t cover.

Consider this your game day post.  Have at it in the comments.

We’ve come in with house money before and gotten steamrolled. Their house money is worth the same as our pressure once they get hit in the mouth.

First, those white helmets look like shit. Second, we just gotta beat those sons of whores today. So, we got those 2 things going for us. That’ll be enough. Kirby comes back wearing a new pair of alligator shoes. Dawgs win 41-24.

  5. 2 point s of history to think about. The Dawgs have lost 4 out of the last five when facing a first year of hc. As for playing fields more. Just remember who threw the pick six in 2002. Nearly identical situation. Getting reps for the freshman was costly that season.

  6. 30-17 Dawgs. Just pray the offense doesn’t lay an egg again. I choose to believe that Smart is a good coach and last season wasn’t a fluke. Good coaches usually win with superior talent. Losing with superior talent in two straight games isn’t something any of us want to think about.

Gators all over start to cry mid 4th quarter. Fromm plays pretty well and so does Fields. Holyfield and Swift have great days.

I know that I like to give some of you crap for complaining about “the play calling”. The situation where we had 3rd and 8 inches there in 2nd quarter and Jim Chaney called the jet sweep instead of a wedge play is a perfectly good time to blame the play call. I know you will end up looking like genius if it goes for 30 yards, but It is EIGHT FREAKING INCHES, JIM!

to add, right before the first down play on that 3 and out series, I was commenting to my family about the need to get a couple of first downs just to gets some running plays on their defense. Our identity is to wear down the defense so that we can RTDB down their throats in the 4th. You can only do that if you wear them down. QB sneak on a wedge play is the only call as they can not outnumber you on the play and you have the RB to help push the pile. We ran it earlier for 5+.

Couple of things: 1) Kirby has to answer for the reoccurring clock management issues—that’s on him totally. Coming away with 7 at the half is huge and 3 virtually meaningless (especially after UF’s opening drive); 2) I do not understand the inconsistency in aggressive play. As others above noted, we are at our best offensively when we play aggressively and quickly (we can do that passing or rushing); 3) where in the world did our tackling go?

He kept coming in like a heat seeking missile without strafing so she could get square to the play. That allowed Perine / Scarlett to make the small jump cut to the inside. He did that at least half a dozen times with the same result. Sure, if you come flying in, you might make the tackle for a 2 yard loss…. or you miss and give up an 8 yard run six times. Strafe and it is a 1-2 yard gain.
