I don’t think Southern ever did claim they started it but the guy who did, the father of their program, brought it with him when he came from Athens.
Though given the origin of the phrase, it does make the small contingent of baby brother syndrome GSU fans that claim to hate UGA look silly when they ally with Tech.

I was born and raised in Statesboro. The vast majority of GSU fans are also Dawg fans and know fully well where GATA came from. Don’t let your opinion be fouled by the ignorant few.

But they went from being adorable, and admired, to being unwelcome by their snotty ass mouths and behavior when they began to play UGA. I hope they never get another invite, although I confess to thinking it was a good idea 20 years ago.

They became disliked by Georgia fans when they became a “kick ass” football team. Personally, I’m glad we have a team like Georgia Southern in the state…and Georgia State and rising Kennesaw State.

Not true. I liked them and cheered for them to win when they became a “kick ass” team. I started disliking them when their fans became as insufferable as Fech fans.

I’m from Savannah, grew up a UGA fan and went to Southern, and after moving around the country for work, live 20 minutes from the Boro. We have season tickets to both UGA and GSU.
When I was initially approached about helping out with the Southern boosters, I told the guy the first thing you need to do is drop the “I hate UGA” rhetoric. Erk wouldn’t spout that shit and it will snuff out any local support you need and hope to get from the masses in the greater Savannah area who grew up watching and loving UGA.
The resentment from some Southern fans is as ridiculous and infuriating as the smug Atlanta arrogance of some Georgia fans. UGA is big time college athletics and GSU is the little home team but they won’t ever be in the same weight class. Hell, there wouldn’t be a GSU if it weren’t for UGA and Erk Russell. Its like saying “F*** the Braves, Go Gwinnett Stripers.” You can support both except for those shitty times when they play each other and you have to pick one.
The win over UF a few years ago was a thing of beauty on multiple levels.

He’s not wrong. Other than changing the name to “Stripers” (WTF is that, BTW. Cheap A-ball version of a Marlin or did they leave out a “P”? I guess it’s better than the “Crappies” or the “Trouts”) (The “Hookers” would be pretty cool, IMO.)
Cool Ray is a really good place to watch a game. Typically seats are shaded, concessions are reasonably priced and available, and there is little Prima-Donna posturing you see in the bigs.

Could be worse. Jacksonville became the Jumbo Shrimp a few years ago. It’s fun to catch a game there on “Thirsty Thursday”.

When Erk started the program, I loved watching Tracy Ham run the flexbone. He could run and throw and was the epitome of what we now call the dual-threat QB. The Eagles played hard, and they made the entire state proud. When we played in ‘92 for the first time, there was a respect between the programs as brothers and between the fans as family. As those games progressed, it seems the GSU fan base developed an inferiority complex. It came to a boiling head in ‘15 for me. Good luck to them, but I never want to play them again.

A lot of that is because, agree with it or not, GSU and it’s fans came in to 2015 looking at UGA as beatable and the next step in a meteoric rise that started with beating UF in 2013. After sneaking up on Florida, GSU had a lot of uncertainty surrounding the move up to FBS and then went undefeated in league play with a new coach in 2014 and had another strong showing in the 2015 leading up to the UGA game.
I hope they never play again either(for different reasons) but wouldn’t it be fair to say that some your disgust is rooted in the fact that, at least for a night, GSU was equal to UGA on the field in Sanford, at night in November and it’s fans acted like any other SEC caliber fanbase rather than a little cousin just happy to make the drive up to Athens for a noon kickoff September asswhipping.

That is so nutso and wrong but to clarify, the new feelings toward ex-little bro has absolutely nothing to do with the closeness of that game. First, they weren’t equal that day—in the same way UCF wasn’t better than AU last season. Dawgs would have mud-stomped them in a meaningful game. I would have enjoy their program being better and being closer to the level of Georgia, but it isn’t likely to happen. The change in attitude is the obnoxious, illogical behavior of GSU fans. They brought it all on themselves, and deserve to have lost the support and well wishes they had before. It was the fans, mostly the younger ones, and they are the ones who changed things. Had nothing to do with players, or talent, on either squad.

UGA will always be a much stronger and deeper squad than GSU, no question. There is also merit to your point that that game is probably a blowout if it was a meaningful game like the SEC championship as opposed to just Senior Night. That said, it wasn’t a blowout, it was a 6 point UGA win in overtime. And if you recall, UGA celebrated on the field to the point of embarrassment.
Southern came in expecting to win and they, especially the students, acted like it by acting like every other fanbase who travels to a nearby visitor’s stadium. I know all other college students and especially UGA students are always the shining example of decorum on the road but Southern was cocky and maybe less than polite.
My point is if it were South Carolina or Vandy who came in like the obnoxious unjustified assholes and that game plays out the same way, everyone would say “Its the SEC, it just means more” because you expect it. Its more annoying for little teams to be belligerent because they shouldn’t expect to win but its alot easier to tolerate when you beat them by 50 rather than 6 in OT.

Not because they are SEC so much as they have all had big victories before…and those teams weren’t there as benefactors of a money grab. I get them hoping for a big program win, but to come in and act as if there weren’t some common roots and a group that had supported them in their infancy made it more distasteful. I know SC fans are going to spit in our faces, we have no common ground with them, GSU fans seem to expect to be treated as royalty. You earn your respect where I come from, and frankly, they weren’t, and aren’t, equals on the football field. They burned some bridges, and should be held accountable for whatever that consequence turns out to be. The “every four years” invite seems to have been lost in the mail based on future scheduling I have seen.

I’m not sure I agree but I respect your opinion. 3 final thoughts and I’m done.
1) Between winning 6 national championships in their weight class, running on Alabama like shit through a Tin horn man, beating Florida, instantly winning in the Sunbelt and giving UGA all they wanted, I’m not sure what else they are supposed to do to gain respect other than move to the SEC west or the AFC.
2) I think the fact that they play an oddball offense and have some horses to run it make them a less than desirable team to pay to play moreso than their fanbase’s feather ruffling. Otherwise, I’m pretty sure they’d make a great candidate because they are one of the only mid majors that will travel well enough to ensure a sellout.
3) I think the arrogance of UGA fans looking down on Southern probably fuels the disdain in some just as much as the points you made about Southern. I never heard much of this on either side until Southern moved up. Kinda like they were always cute as long as they knew their place. Southern isn’t entitled to any special treatment from UGA fans for its small time accomplishments just like UGA shouldnt expect any special reverence for its 1980 championship.
They do, however, have common roots and both sides should recognize and respect each other for it.

I’d rather see Georgia Southern in Athens than Nichols or Austin Peay any day. Hell, if we didn’t play a team because we don’t like their fans, we’d never play Tech.

That is a low bar. Would you rather have them than OU, TX, USC, Nebraska, or even a Va Tech/NC State/Penn State/FSU/Nebraska type team? On the lower end, an Illinois/Wake/Kansas State? You want to upgrade the schedule, I am with you, but screw GSU. They blew it, imo.

I guess you didn’t actually watch the Peach bowl last year. The most important player on UCF’s team, their QB Milton, didn’t even play a good game by his standards, yet UCF still managed to win the game. Milton played better in the 2nd half but in the 1st half he was so jacked up that he couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn and overthrew his open receivers more often than not. Had Milton played an average game, UCF would have run Auburn out of the stadium by the end 3rd quarter and won by 21.

I have no problem with Georgia Southern. The fans and the overtime game brought some life to what was otherwise a dead 2015 football season for Georgia. We had fun that night. It’s good to see Coach McGee on our side now.
I’m happy to see them bounce back in football this season and pull for the Eagles when they play GT, UF, Clemson, and the other bigger schools. Today, I know they are often confused with Georgia State (GSU) and their fans hate that.

GATA is a Georgia thing that Vince Dooley graciously allowed its creator, Erk Russell, to take to Statesboro. The fact that their redneck fans believe they own it speaks volumes to the little brother mentality of their fan base.
On the topic at hand, I loved hearing Kirby tell them to CYAL.

Yeah the story goes that Erk came up with it while UGA was playing at Tech, he saw the letters GTAA ( for Ga. Tech Athletic Association) on the back of a chair or some other equipment in the locker room and coined his own acronym. So that’s just another negative (for them) that they inspired for UGA.

Their “redneck fans”? I don’t think red neck means what you think it means. Most of the Georgia Southern people that I have ever known were upper middle class Atlanta kids who couldn’t get in to UGA or grew up hating UGA and couldn’t get into Tech. Red neck is about the last thing those people are. Red neck would be an upgrade.

I thought it was really interesting to see the difference in demeanor between the two coaches. I also think it’s interesting that, when he’s asked about getting the players motivated, Smart usually talks about keeping their mentality neutral rather than “getting up” for big games, but he seemed pretty fired up in that video.

He seems fired up most of the time. I don’t think it’s that he doesn’t believe in being fired up for big games. It’s that you want to avoid being flat in the others. The goal is to always be fired up, ideally, even if that’s impossible to achieve. And, of course, channeling that energy positively.

I watched that show last night and was glad to see our guy can deliver a more rousing pep talk than their guy. If Howdy Doody was an old jock, that would be Dan Mullen.
I see no real evidence of fearing Mullen. Good coach but doesnt have that extra gear like Spurrier and Meyer did.

Getting them fired up for the game ALWAYS needs to be accomplished. CKS wants to avoid getting them over-hyped and playing in a frenzied state which leads to a loss of thinking and stupid penalties. The contrast here is EXACTLY what separates the CMR’s and the CKS’s of the world.

I’m so glad UGA is coached by a guy who really understands what this game means to the school, players, and fanbase.
