Don’t forget that the same leadership decided to leave a conference in which they were a freaking founding member because they thought they could earn a few more bucks in the short-term off the B1G Network. Long-term planning doesn’t seem to be a strong suit with Maryland leadership.

^This. One also needs to remember that Maryland was longtime really a basketball school and was a multiple BB champion of the ACC (both tournament and regular season) and won the national championship in BB while an ACC member.

I offer that neither Ped St., Rutgers nor Maryland logically belong in the Integer. Sorta like how BC/Pitt/Syracuse ought not be involved in the ACC. Back in The Day (80s) the proposition of a Northeastern all-sports league was bandied about, and all these schools would probably have benefitted.

I still find myself thinking ACC when ever I hear Maryland. On the flip side, the ACC is probably glad that this is the BIG 10s problem and not theirs.

The U. of Maryland is a strange place. Good school, nice campus, but it’s surrounded by an area that has all the charm of Peachtree Industrial Boulevard.
No college town vibe. Not much school spirit or pride for a state flagship university. You got a sense from most of the students that the U of Maryland wasn’t their first choice.

Maryland has a very Rutgers vibe, as in it doesn’t seem to be the first choice for many local kids. We lived in Towson for many years and none of the kids there seemed interested in going to College Park. (We’re now in DC and the sentiments are similar.) In fact, the only people I’ve met who’ve gone there and were enthusiastic about it were people from NJ who really didn’t want to go to Rutgers.
While my opinion is subjective, I’d argue the campus is not very nice. It’s big and sprawling and there’s obviously been a lot of investment in it in recent years, but it seems poorly planned and is not very scenic. UVA and the smaller MD schools (Johns Hopkins, Loyola, Goucher – even Towson University and McDaniel) have prettier campuses. I do agree wholeheartedly with you that the town of College Park is a dump – and a crime-ridden one at that.

Maryland’s coaching decisions are right there with TN’s the past few years, amirite? As bad as their decisions have been regarding this horror story, the failures at Bama, TN, FU, USC, etc. are not that different, imo.

True, we did have our faces pushed in it with two public turndowns and hiring a former player and QB coach. Almost all of that was on Dooley for not having any semblance of a succession plan. But I would say ours was less difficult to move on from compared to the ones I mentioned, and we were not at their heights from which to fall. We certainly aren’t the poster child for a seamless transition. Should have had Nebraska on that list as well (yet to be determined about the Longhorns, imo.)
