“… it’s really hard to just walk in the door and just take your stars and run out there…”

Read this piece on Kirby’s “realist” recruiting approach and ponder what kind of effect that’s had on Justin Fields.

I don’t know. What kind of effect has it had on Justin Fields?

I suspect Jake Fromm having the second best single season passer rating in UGA recorded history may have a bigger effect on Justin Fields. I love them both and I do not want one to falter to create an opportunity for the other.

Justin’s in “worst case scenario” right now. Jake has a huge edge in experience in the offense, and he’s clearly got the confidence of his coaches – but he’s not lighting it up in a way that would indicate he could be an early entrant into the NFL draft.

Which leaves Justin in an awkward position. Does he hope Jake’s progression into next season makes an early round draft grade a probability? Or does he hope he beats Jake out at some point? Or does he find somewhere where he can get serious starter reps under his belt?

I have zero concerns about Smart being up front with recruits on the trail. He knows what you end up with if a bunch of kids show up with unreasonable expectations based on the recruiting pitch. They’re going to show up with unreasonable expectations, but the pitch can’t feed those.

Much harder than it sounds, and it’s why recruiters like Smart are so rare.

Jake’s performance to date isn’t sending him to the NFL after 3 years. If he puts on tape a couple of games where he’s carrying the team, then I suspect his stock will skyrocket, but as of today, he’s looking like a 4 year college QB. Nothing wrong with that. Brady played 4 years at Michigan.

But that’s a real problem for Fields.

I disagree, he has all the tools an NFL team needs…we shall see.
This is not the only mock draft I’ve seen that has him VERY high after his 3rd season.

Yeah it seems to me that this could work out perfectly. Fromm plays 2019, has another incredibly efficient and effective year, gets drafted top 5 and leaves with a junior Fields to take the reigns.

This currently seems the most likely scenario to me.

Last year, Fields said he was willing to sit a year and noted many pros have the same experience in college. Kirby’s honesty probably helped there. That said, Justin if he doesn’t beat Fromm next year I think he leaves. Hopefully Kirby let’s the best player play (I think that will be Fields).

Kirby has never said “I’ll let the best layer play.” He always says “I’ll play the player who gives us the best chance to win.” (Paraphrased)
Some will take what I’m saying as a knock on Fields. It’s not. But Fromm by all accounts was a leader on the field the minute he stepped into the huddle at App.State. The team respected and him and played hard with and for him. I think that is still the case and until Fields establishes himself with the team, Fromm will be the guy.

I said a couple of weeks ago, this is not really a close competition in 2018, but next spring/summer will be a real bear for KS to manage. I am surprised it has created a minor storm at all at this point in the season but attribute almost all of that to the obsessed, young recruitniks among our fanbase. I realize the star ratings can be a definite indicator of potential for individuals and the team but of all groups that have seen the number of highly rated athletes flop before, UGA’s fans should know it often takes time, and sometimes never materializes.

As great as Tua has been this season, he had not assumed the role at Alabama last year at this point. And he was an early enrollee challenging Hurts who was not as skilled a total QB as Fromm has been. (Had Sanders not shifted that pass in the end zone in the final game and gotten that 2nd INT from Tua, I believe Saban would have gone back to Hurts. Who knows what Tua would have done had he been benched.) All to say, Fields looks very promising but this “controversy” is premature at this point. The coaches see every game and practice rep, there is a reason Fields is being brought along at this pace. That doesn’t mean things don’t heat up quickly once we move further in the season, or some event doesn’t present an opportunity for Fields to show he is ready to compete for the starting job. Tricky balancing act for sure, I cannot say how it will go long term but am confident we have the right guy at the controls now.

IMO, I think Fields should transfer after the season. I just don’t see a scenario where things work out in his favor. He is too talented to sit behind anyone for 3 years, and if he beats out Fromm next season, one can only imagine the microscope he would be under with some fans probably calling for Fromm after every mistake he makes. If Fields and Fromm were separated by 1 more class, I think it would work out for them both as Fields would learn from Fromm for 2 years and be the man for 2 years.

I still think Fields should have redshirted. No more than he has been used this year? There’s your separation.

Exactly, and transferring is a problem, there are not many teams that run a true pro offense to get him ready. Urban doesn’t, Mullen doesn’t, Prescott was just good enough to overcome it. Hard to see where he goes, maybe OU?

Deshaun Watson was a first round pick. I don’t recall him running a pro offense at Clemson. There’s not a college team in this country
(except some UGA fans seemingly) that wouldn’t want Justin on their team.

If Fromm is good enough to be drafted after the 2019 season, why would any Georgia fan wish for him to leave early? Crazy talk. I like Fields potential too but that’s all it is now.

Agree, bird in the hand would be my preference. We can’t change their class overlap but I am not convinced Fields can/will beat Fromm out. He isn’t getting many reps in games for a reason, and it isn’t because Smart doesn’t want to win.

Best case scenario for Fields is the following. Continue to play this year and next as Fromm’s backup. Prepare like the starter. Make the most of his snaps in garbage time. John Rhys Plumlee will redshirt in 2019. Fields can redshirt in 2020 while still playing 4 games in case something happens to Jake. That leaves Fields two years as the starter AFTER 3 years of high level coaching.

Fields aspires to play in the NFL. The best path for that is long term coaching in a pro-style offense. Few teams run one any more. Most anywhere he would transfer is likely to ask him to run the ball a lot more than we are. Transferring makes it much more likely that some other team RGIII’s his knees.
